A/N Ok, hear me out. I have about two chapters of this story written, but I'm trashing it and starting over with a different plot and point of view. It was suppose to be part of my 'linked stories' I feel bad just deleting it, so I'll put it here in case anyone is curious......
"Complete these four tasks....."
"But after this loop, you'll see them again. I promise that you will have your happy ending."
"Being Immortal has taken its toll on me. I'm ready to leave this loop."
"Awww, Seto! You look so cute as a baby!"
(Seto's POV)
I wake up to pans being banged together, and a women's voice yelling for us to wake up. I groan and roll out of bed and onto the floor. I quickly get up to avoide being trampled by the other twenty-sum boys that sleep in the same room as me. My bed is one of the few that don't have a bunk on top. I slept in the clothes that I'm wearing today, so I don't bother to change before leaving the room.
I just pull out the cloak I keep underneath my bed. It's probably the nicest thing I have. A mix between gray and purple, it had been my sixteenth, and only, birthday present. The rest of my clothes are pretty ragged and worn. In a place like this, it's good to hide anything of value. I button the cloak around my neck and pull up the hood as I walk down the hall.
I enter a big room full of tables. Around a hundred kids are in here, ranging from age four to seventeen. Kids three and under are kept separate, and anyone over eighteen has already left this nether hole. I quickly swipe a piece of bread from the breakfast line and sit down at a table to myself. I would often times not be here for lunch, and there sometimes wasn't enough food at dinner. The seventeen year-olds decided long ago that oldest got to eat first. So, me being the tiniest seventeen year-old to ever exist, I somehow get to eat first. But when there isn't enough food, I give my share to some of the younger kids who won't get any of their own. I'd feel so terrible if I kept the food. It's better that they have it. Not a lot of people watch out for them after they're four.
I quickly eat my bread and leave the area. The rest of the older people were leaving as well. Even though we're not adults yet, the orphanage managers have us work. They get 95% of the money, of corse. They say its to pay them back for taking care of us, but I'm pretty sure the they get funding from the kingdom. I push open one of the heavy doors and feel the morning breeze kiss my cheeks. I smile at the little taste of freedom. I quickly leave the high fences that surround the orphanage and start down the dirt road to the town that's a few minutes walk away. I put my head down and walk to the side, that way I might not be noticed.
I trudge up the road and come within sight of the village. A guard stands at the gate, immediately bringing his attention to me. He starts glaring once he recognizes me. Here we go again. "Orphan scum. I though I told you not to come back here!", he snarls while blocking my way. "Th-There's nowhere e-else to go", I stutter out. He scoffs at me before moving. Just before I leave him behind, I feel a hand on my back that shoves me down. I skin my knees and arms when I try to catch myself, but my throat also gives a fiery burst of pain. I've told my caretaker that my throat hurts at random times, but she didn't believe me, and I'm left to deal with the pain. I quickly scramble to my feet and dash away into the town.
Orphans don't really have a good selection when it comes to jobs, but at least I lucked out with people who don't despise my presence. I walk up to a brick building, a few kids already starting to arrive. Did I not mention that I work at a school? I slip into the building and to a closet on the side of a hallway. The only bad thing is that they have me clean the entire place...... but on the bright side, they let me read the books in the library. Most orphans can't read, but I managed to teach myself syllable by syllable during my time here. I rip myself from my thoughts as I start to clean.
***
(Seto's POV)
It only takes me two hours to clean, and then I quickly put away the supplies. Now I have four glorious hours of free time before I have go home. I'm probably the only orphan in this town who has some sort of education that's school related. I taught myself how to read, use mathematics, and other such things since I've been working here for a while.
All the kids here are in their classes, leaving me to walk down the empty halls in silence. I make my way to a set of wooden double doors and push one open for me to slip through. The room is one of the largest in the school, only being dwarfed by the inside training center. Rows and rows of shelves line the room with books. Even more shelves are set up in the middle of one half of the room. The other half has tables and chairs for the students to use. A small desk is next to the two doors, a women sitting behind it with her own book. She glances up and gives me a small nod before continuing to read. I'm here almost every day, so she knows why I'm here.
I walk through the rows and rows of books, a small smile on my face. It feels like I could just disappear into into one of these books some day. All the different stories give a unique perspective, no two are ever the same. This is one of the few places where I feel like I belong. I graze my hand over the different spines until finding the one that I had started yesterday. It's about an ender dragon hybrid that was created in a lab. They author gave them ability to speak any language. It must be really amazing to be able to do that. Too bad he isn't real. (Oh Seto, it only you knew)
I sit down at a table with the book, quickly finding where I left off. I only read for a few minutes before I hear shuffling coming from the front of the library. Hushed whispers also sound from the group of kids who just walked in. The first group should be the littlest ones. They attempt to be quiet in the library, but don't do a very good job. The librarian just smiles and lets them whisper in loud voices. It isn't long before a little girl comes up to me and tugs on my sleeve. "Seto, will you read to me?", she asks, holding up a picture book. "Of corse I will", I agree, smiling down at her. Five other children immediately scurry over to sit in a rough circle around me.
I can't help but smile even more. I take the book from the young girl and turn to the next page as they settle in. As I read, I use silly voice for the different characters. The kids laugh and giggle as I speak. It only takes about ten minutes for me to get through the book, but they already have another one picked out for me. They would've given me more if their teacher didn't come and get them for their next class. The teacher gives me a grateful smile on her way out.
Many people would call me very serious or secretive, but they just don't know me well enough. It's not like I have many friends. You'd think living in the same room as twenty other boys would make us more acquainted. It's hard for me to easily trust anyone. Maybe it comes with being an orphan. I've always felt like I can't have any attachment to people, because they'll always leave. Or maybe it's me who always leaves? I don't remember ever leaving anyone like that.
I leave the small school soon after that. My work was done for the day, and I'm hoping that I won't get caught in the rain. The clouds above have been darkening all day. It's a quick walk from the school back to the gate. I'm relieved to see that the guard from earlier in gone. It's no trouble to leave the town now. The walk back to the orphanage is even peaceful.
Upon reaching the gate to the building, I hear something move in tree line. I whip around to face the woods. A figure disappears through the trees and out of my sight. Who was that? What are the sneaking around an orphanage? I teeter on the edge of curiosity and rational since for a moment, before I step away from the fence. I'm going to regret this......
Everything instantly darkness when I enter the woods. It's only a few hours after noon, but the tree branches are woven together to almost form a roof. I can just make out another person rushing through the trees. They're being so loud that I don't bother to try and be stealthy. Are they late for something? I dodge several trees while chasing after them. The figure suddenly stops for a moment. I clumsily duck behind a tree as the turn around. My hand covers my mouth to try and silence my ragged breathing. The footsteps soon resume.
A/N That's all I wrote. In this one, Seto is a sorcerer prince from Liblicen, thought to have been assassinated as a baby. The neck piece he has prevents magic use. I've come up with a better plot and story that I have more motivation for, so this one is being trashed. Bye <3
