[09]: How It All Began

2023 Westview, New Jersey

Agnes, who had now revealed herself to be Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch that has been alive since the Salem witch trials, was now walking Wanda through all of the events of her life that led up to this moment of her creating the Hex. Wanda had relayed to Christian that she wasn't sure how the Hex started and that she didn't remember starting it if she did start it. Agatha had taken her through the bomb that killed her parents and the experimentation with the mind stone. Now Wanda was back at the Avengers facility in the aftermath of what happened during Sokovia. She knew what this memory was; it was one of her first conversations with Christian Rogers.

Wanda Maximoff was sitting on her bed in her room at the Avengers Compound and barely paying attention to what was on screen. It had been a few months since what happened in Sokovia and the loss of her brother, but she was still working through her grief, and it wasn't getting any easier for her. The main thing she wanted was Pietro back.

"So, where are we?" Agatha asked as they stood in the room with the past Wanda.

"The Avengers Compound. It was the first home Christian and I ever shared. Pietro was dead, and I was in a new country. I was all alone." Wanda said.

Wanda Maximoff could hear inside her head the voice of Christian Rogers debating whether or not to knock on her door as he stood outside of it. "You can come in, Christian," Wanda said. The door slowly opened, and Christian Rogers poked his head in.

"I'm sorry, Wanda. I don't mean to interrupt." Christian said.

"You don't?" Wanda asked.

"Well...-uh... no... I mean, uh...-yes, I intended to come here." Christian stumbled over his words like he always did whenever he talked to Wanda. He always felt so nervous around her, and he didn't want to say the wrong thing, especially not now.

"And now?" Wanda asked.

"And... Well, uh...-Whatever you prefer is fine with me. I can leave." Christian said as he started to open the door again. Wanda shook her head and patted the spot on her bed next to her, indicating for Christian to sit with her. Christian re-closed her door behind him before joining her on her bed. When Christan sat down, the two smiled at each other and were very aware of how close they suddenly were. Christian turned to the TV, Wanda had on a sitcom, and in the show, a man was working on building something on the outside of his house, but the whole thing had just collapsed on him. Christian laughed a little, which made Wanda crack a smile, but it quickly faded away.

"My mom told us she used to distract herself with sit-coms when dad..." Christian trailed off as he realized what he was about to say, and then he took a deep breath. "I'm sorry, Wanda, I don't want to presume to know how you're feeling. But if you want to talk about it, we can, if it would bring any comfort to you to know someone...-well me, to know I'm here for you." Christian said. He could slightly imagine what Wanda was going through because he had no idea what he would do if he ever lost Amaya.

"What makes you think that talking about it would bring me comfort? Did Katherine talk about Steve while he was under ice?" Wanda asked, and Christian sighed.

"I think you'd have to ask her... I'm about 80 years too late...-" She cut him off.

"...-The only thing that would bring me comfort is seeing him again." She slightly snapped at him. Christian nodded his head and looked away; he looked back at the TV screen and mentally kicked himself. He didn't want to say the wrong thing, but that's exactly what ended up happening. From beside him, Wanda sighed. "I'm sorry, Chris. I didn't mean to snap at you. I'm...-I'm just so tired. It's just like this wave washing over me, again and again. It knocks me down, and when I try to stand up, it just comes for me again. And it...-it's just gonna drown me." Wanda said.

"No... no, it won't." Christian said.

"Yeah... how do you know?" Wanda asked.

"Because... every day that you wake up and get out of bed no matter how painful it is, that's you rising above the wave. I can't imagine what it's like to lose a twin, and I'm so sorry you're going through this. But it can't all be sorrow, right? I mean, what is grief if not love persevering?" He said. Wanda didn't say anything; she was just thinking about what he said. As they sat there in silence, Christian turned back to the TV and laughed at something that happened, and then he looked at Wanda. "I'm sorry." He said.

"No, don't apologize; it was funny," Wanda said. Christian looked over at her right as she laughed, which brought a smile onto her face and made Christian smile.

"It's refreshing to see you smile," Christian said, which made Wanda smile again. The two of them held each other's smiles for a few more moments before they dropped, but their eyes never left each other. They held each other's gazes for a few moments, feeling as if they were in a trance with each other.

Then they both turned back to the TV.

As Wanda watched the memory play out, she had tears in her eyes. But then Agatha came up behind her. "So let me get this straight. Parents dead. Brother dead. Christian in a coma. What happened when he wasn't there to pull you back from the darkness, Wanda?" Agatha asked.

"I can't do this anymore," Wanda said as she wiped her eyes and turned back to Agatha.

"Come on, Wanda! You're on the precipice. You are right there! Tell me how you did it." Agatha said as she walked up behind her and laid her hand on her shoulder. "Christian fell into a coma; doctors don't know how long he'll be down..." She said as she walked around Wanda to be in front of her. "...But you wanted him back," Agatha said.

"I wanted him back..." Wanda said. When she looked to her side, another door was open, a door that led into the hospital where Christian was. "I wanted him back..." She said.

And then she walked through the doors.

Wanda Maximoff was quickly rushing through the hospital after she got the call from Katherine. It wasn't too long after the funeral of Tony Stark; she had just seen Christian, he was fine... He even said he had a surprise for her. She walked up to the receptionist's desk and took a deep breath. "Christian Rogers, where is he?" She asked.

"Wanda!" She heard the voice of Katherine. She looked over and saw Katherine, Steve, Bucky, Amaya, and Amaya was holding her younger brother Anthony and Wanda quickly rushed over to them.

"Katherine, Steve? What happened? He was fine just a few days ago..." Wanda said.

"Honey, we don't know... We were at home, and he just collapsed." Katherine said. She had tears in her eyes, and they were quickly streaming down her cheeks.

"Do they even know what's wrong? He's an enhanced individual." Wanda said.

"We called Bruce... nobody knows what it is, we don't know what caused it. His scans came back, there was some brain swelling, so maybe in the fight something happened, we just don't know." Katherine said.

"Will he wake up?" Wanda asked.

"We don't know..." Steve responded.

"Can I see him?" She asked, and Katherine nodded her head.

"Of course, sweetie, go..." Katherine said as she gestured to Christian's room. Wanda quickly walked in and closed the door behind her. A small gasp emitted from her lips when she saw Christian lying unconscious in bed.

"Chris..." She walked to his bedside and sat down on the edge while grabbing his hand. "How did this happen?" She whispered. She looked around the room, looking for something to indicate to her that he would wake up soon. He was hooked up to a ventilator to help him breathe. "You're supposed to be able to heal..." She whispered.

Wanda took a deep breath and decided to try something. She let her powers float above her palm, and she lightly hovered over Christian's forehead. As the revelation kicked in, Wanda started to cry harder. "I can't feel you... why can't I feel you?" She cried as she let her hand drop. "I can't feel you..." She repeated as she laid her head down on his shoulder and started to sob.

From outside of the room, Katherine looked at the envelope in her hands. She found it in Christian's room after bringing him to the hospital, and she saw Wanda's name was on it. She knew it was the surprise that Christian had for Wanda because he had talked to her and Steve about it. He got them a home, in New Jersey, somewhere for the two of them to live as their own couple and grow old together, and the city in New Jersey he chose wasn't too far away from Brooklyn, so he could still see his family all the time.

When Wanda walked out of the room after about 30 minutes, Katherine could hear her crying, and she gently laid her hand down on her shoulder. "Wanda... I found this in Christian's room. I think it was his surprise for you." Katherine said as she held up the envelope.

"Oh... thank you," Wanda whispered. Katherine immediately wrapped her in a hug, and the two women cried together. Katherine ran her hand up and down Wanda's back as they hugged, and then Wanda broke the hug and wiped her tears. "I'm gonna try to get some rest, I know he would want me to, but will you call me?" Wanda asked.

"If anything changes, I promise you will be the first call," Katherine said, and Wanda nodded her head.

"Thank you, Katherine..."

When Wanda got back inside her car, she looked at the envelope that Katherine had given her. She had no idea what was inside it, so she took a moment to open it and found two pieces of paper. The first paper on top was a letter from Christian.

Wanda,
I know I've been a little secretive about this and have purposely kept you out of my head, but I promise it'll all be worth it. This surprise is for us, but mainly for you. The paper below this one is a deed to a property in New Jersey. I figured we could use our own space; there is no house there yet because I wanted to build you the house of your dreams or let you use the amazing power you have to conjure up your dream house yourself. If you've received this letter, that means I'm already at the property, just waiting for you to join me.
I love you,
Chris.

Wanda had tears in her eyes as she drove to the city located on the deed to the property. When she got there, she noticed it was very lowkey and small. But she liked it because it was also cozy. When she made it to the property on the deed, just like Christian said in his letter, there was no house there, since he wanted them to build one together, but unlike what he said in the letter, he wasn't there waiting for her, because he couldn't be. Wanda slowly got out of her car with the deed in her hand, and she walked onto the lot.

She opened up the paper and looked at the deed once again to see that Christian had drawn a heart around the property that was theirs and wrote inside the heart. "For us and future mini-avengers. -Chris." Wanda slowly closed the paper and held it to her chest as she started to cry again. It wasn't fair; Christian should be here.

Wanda sank to her knees and doubled over as she cried harder. The deed fell from her hands and onto the ground as her sobs grew louder. She felt an overwhelming surge of power moving through her until she let it release. And as she released her power, the house started to form around her the way she wanted it to. When Wanda finished the house, she released another surge of power that took over the entire town and made everything into a 50s sitcom. But another surge of energy was coming out of her, and it was recreating Christian Rogers right in front of her.

Without realizing it, Wanda had recreated Christian from her memories of him.

Wanda stared in shock as Christian was looking back at her with a smile on his face. Completely dressed in 50s attire, as was the inside of their home, and when Wanda stepped up, she too was in 50s dress. "Wanda... Welcome home. Should we stay in tonight?" Christian asked. Wanda nodded her head, and the two made their way over to the couch.

The couple shared a sweet kiss.

Wanda was brought back to reality, and she was inside Agatha's home, but she heard her children yelling out for her. Agatha had them bound by her magic. The kids were still struggling as Agatha held them there, and Wanda had her hands up; her powers were illuminating through, and she was ready to make a move if Agatha hurt them.

"Get off of me! Let go of my brother!" Tommy yelled.

"My powers work out here, or did you forget?" Wanda asked.

"No, dear. I'm counting on it." Agatha said. The boys tried to run forward, but Agatha yanked them back, which sent them to the ground, and Wanda immediately went into defense mode.

"No!" She exclaimed as she used her powers to knock Agatha down and help free the boys. Then she looked at her sons. "Go to your room, now." She said.

"No way, we're staying with you," Tommy said.

"Come on, Mom, we can help," Billy said. Agatha recovered herself and got off the ground.

"Listen to your mother, boys," Agatha said.

"Now!" Wanda exclaimed.

The two boys ran inside, which left Wanda and Agatha to fight with each other. Wanda wondered where Christian was or if he was ever going to show up to this fight.

But currently, she had to defend herself.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

Meanwhile, back in Brooklyn, Christian Rogers had woken up in the hospital, and his sister and Bucky were at his side. "Chris... Hey buddy, do you know us?" Bucky asked as Christian started to look around the room. He let his eyes focus, and he recognized his sister and Bucky, and he nodded his head.

"Maya... Uncle Bucky... What happened? Where am I?" Christian asked.

"After Uncle T's funeral, you just collapsed, but your brain was swollen, so it must've happened in the fight against Thanos," Amaya said.

"Where's Mom and Dad? Where's Wanda?" Christian asked as he started to sit up.

"Um... about that." Bucky trailed off into an explanation of Katherine's call from Darcy and how they hadn't heard from Katherine and Steve in nearly two days when they were giving regular check-ins.

"Wait, so Wanda... she created a...-and I have kids? It doesn't matter. I need to get to New Jersey." Christian said as he started to take out his IV and the other things he was hooked up to.

"Whoa, Chris, wait a minute...-" He cut his sister off.

"...-Wanda needs me... not some version of me that she remade or whatever she did. Where are my clothes?" He asked as he looked around once he got out of the bed. Bucky and Amaya shared a look and knew Christian wasn't going to quit.

"Okay, look. I'll go talk to the doctors and get you discharged, we'll take you back to the house, you get a change of clothing, and then we'll go to New Jersey, okay?" Bucky said, and Christian nodded his head.

"Thanks, Uncle Bucky."

WESTVIEW

As Wanda and Agatha were fighting, a new threat entered the fold. It was Vision, but not the Vision that the Avengers knew and cared for. It was Hayward's creation of Vision that he did, unauthorized to turn him into a weapon. He took Vision apart just to rebuild him the way he wanted him to be. Wanda was shocked to see what used to be her friend in the shell of a new body.

Katherine, Steve, Christian, and Vision all got back to their neighborhood around the same time, and the Hex Vision tackled White Vision off of Wanda while Christian ran to his wife. "Wanda! Are you okay? Where are the boys?" Christian asked.

"They're in the house. Safe. Chris... I should've told you everything. The moment I realized what I had done." Wanda said, and Christian shook his head as he laid his hand down on her cheek.

"It's okay, Wanda... my parents told me everything, and I understand, but this...-" She cut him off.

"...-I can fix it." She said.

"Can you?" Christian asked. They all looked over and saw White Vision was walking out from the fire, and Christian looked at his parents. "I won't ask you guys to fight... because I know you're retired, but would you mind keeping an eye on your grandkids?" Christian asked. Katherine and Steve immediately nodded their heads.

"Of course, just be safe, both of you," Katherine said before she and Steve went into the house to greet the boys. Christian turned back to his wife.

"This is our home," Wanda said.

"Then let's fight for it," Christian said.

Vision went after White Vision, while Christian and Wanda went after Agatha.
