Chapter 50: Im your sponsor today
Katie
I'm on my way to Wyatt's house to pick him up for school. Since his mom's car is still under repair he left his Jeep with her to drive.
As I park my truck Wyatt comes out his front door and points at me while mouthing, "I'm driving."
Normally I would act all stubborn and put up a fight, but honestly, I didn't feel like driving.
I unbuckle my seat belt and move to the passenger seat.
"Hey sleeping beauty, did you sleep well?" Wyatt teases.
I groan. "I can't believe I fell asleep while watching that movie. I don't know what can over me I never fall asleep during movies."
Except when I watch them with you, I add in my head.
Wyatt chuckles as he backs out of his driveway. "Good thing you're a cute sleeper."
I roll my eyes.
But a flock of butterflies decides now is a great time to migrate to my chest.
"Do girls really like it when guys mess with their hair?" Wyatt asks.
"Yes." God, if Wyatt decides to run his fingers through mine I might melt.
Just thinking about it sends my nerves into overdrive.
"Hmm." Wyatt hums.
After I get my book from my locker we head off to Izzy's locker.
We find her digging through her locker with a scowl.
"Iz, what's the matter?" I ask.
She stops to look up at me. "Your idiot friend, that just so happens to be my boyfriend. That's what."
I just nod my head and Wyatt wraps his arm around me. I feel goosebumps race across my arms and up the back of my neck.
"What happened?" Wyatt asks casually.
Meanwhile, my entire body is short-circuiting.
"It's more along the lines of what didn't happen," Izzy mutters as she goes back to rummaging through her locker.
"Izzy, what are you looking for?" I ask while putting a hand on her shoulder.
"This," Izzy says as she holds up a squished granola bar.
She slams her locker shut and her eyes dart towards me and then back to Wyatt. "Y'all always look so cute together."
Wyatt lets out a chuckle and I take Izzy's hand. "Why don't I walk you to class? I have a paper I have to hand in anyway."
When she's like this is hard to tell what might slip out of her mouth.
Izzy gives me a confused look. "But you don't have history first period."
"I know but I have a paper to turn in before school starts," I say through clenched teeth.
Izzy still looks confused then she suddenly smirks. What I'm saying finally clicked in her mind.
I pull her away from Wyatt before she embarrasses me. "I'll see you in class Just Wyatt," I call over my shoulder.
Wyatt waves.
"Katie, did you have to extend your essay assignment?" Izzy asks in a very high-pitched voice.
I sigh. "Yeah, I did. It's not that big of a deal."
Izzy stops me. "Yes! It! Is!"
She calms her face. "Not once in the three years we've been in high school have you done that."
I shrug my shoulders. "I was busy and didn't have time."
"Too busy spending time with your mega, super-ultra hot boyfriend," Izzy says fanning herself.
I poke her chest. "You're in a committed relationship you can not say stuff like that."
Izzy shrugs. "I'm pissed with him right now."
I laugh and we walk the rest of the way to her class.
Wyatt
I watch Katie drag Izzy down the hall and then turn around to walk to my class.
As I turn a corner I nearly run into Tyler. "What are you doing hiding against the wall," I ask.
"Isn't it obvious?" Tyler's eyes dart around.
"I'm hiding from Izzy." Tyler snaps as he looks around the corner.
I roll my eyes. "What did you do to make her so pissed."
Tyler's eyes dart around the hallway as if she appeared in the two seconds he took to glance down the hall. "I forgot to text her goodnight last night."
"You're joking right?" I ask.
Tyler gives me a dead look. "No, I'm not joking. I fell asleep after working on homework and forgot to text her."
I shake my head. "You can't be serious."
"Can't be serious about what?" Ryan asks interrupting our conversation.
"Ty said Izzy's pissed because he forgot to text her goodnight last night," I tell him with a smirk.
Ryan winces. "Bad move man."
Tyler runs a hand down his face. "I know."
I glance between them confused. "He just forgot to text her goodnight last night. It's not like he kissed another girl."
Tyler shakes his head. "You don't understand she is not necessarily mad about the text. It was the text that was the final straw."
"Everything I've done that bothers her has come to the surface and exploded like a volcano."
Ryan nods his head in understanding.
"Just tell her it was an accident I don't get why you are so scared of her," I say.
Ryan and Tyler look at each other and then back to me with the same unreadable look. "Have you ever been around a mad woman before?"
I have made Katie mad a few times and she was pretty scary but it wasn't over it texting her.
"Yeah, I have but, I think you should just talk to her," I tell Tyler.
Tyler smirks. "You're all talk but if it was Katie that was pissed with you; you would be doing the same thing."
I fold my arms across my chest. "I would not."
Tyler rolls his eyes. "Whatever."
The bell rings and Tyler sighs. "See you later, Sweetcheeks."
"Bye Sugarlips," I tell him as I walk in the opposite direction.
Ryan jogs up to Tyler. "Hey, I want a cringy pet name."
I hear Tyler laughs. "Alright, You now go by Poundcake."
My class lets out late so I didn't get to walk Katie to lunch.
When I walk into the lunch room I see Katie, Izzy, and Tyler at our table. Ryan and Gloria must have gone out to get lunch.
"Good, you're here. Do you have plans after school?" Izzy asks me as I sit down.
"No."
"Alright, your coming shopping with us," Izzy says as she stirs her soup.
"No Iz, I have clothes," Katie whines.
"You both need something to wear to your dad's dance."
"No, we don't." Katie and I say at the same time.
"Ow! Did you just kick me." Katie snaps rubbing her shin.
Izzy smiles innocently. "Whoops."
She looks back down at her soup. "You're going shopping and that's final."
"Fine Mother," Katie grumbles causing Tyler to laugh.
Izzy glares at Tyler causing him to freeze. "Wafer-thin ice, buddy."
Katie laughs and rests her head on my shoulder.
After school, we walk to our cars. "Hey Kate, if you were dating someone how would you feel if they didn't text you goodnight?" I ask.
Katie smiles. "What a minute I thought we were dating?"
I roll my eyes. "For real."
Gosh, how I wish that were true.
"I don't know. Probably sad, I know it sounds stupid but having someone you care deeply for tell you goodnight makes you feel special."
She takes a breath her lips twitch the slightest.
"It makes you feel like they think about you just as much as you think about them."
I guess all girls like goodnight texts. I will always tell Katie goodnight from now on.
Even if she has a boyfriend. I will make his life hell.
Just thinking about her getting a boyfriend pissed me off.
I park my Jeep beside Tylers and I hop out while Katie digs through her bag.
I open her door and she glares at me through her bottom eyelashes.
She slides down and walks past me.
"No, thank you," I exclaim. Katie smirks at me over her shoulder.
We walk to the other side of Tyler's car and Izzy smiles at us. "Since the mall closes in a few hours Tyler is going to help Wyatt and I'm going to help Katie."
Katie raises her eyebrows with a grin.
Here comes a joke.
"Really, you're going to let Tyler pick out Wyatt's clothes?"
"Have you seen what he wears?"
Tyler folds his arms. "Excuse me, I have more fashion sense than you."
"Which one of us whore bright yellow shorts paired with a bright red spider man shirt?"
Katie fires back.
"Two years ago Kat, that was two years ago." Tyler whines and Katie takes a breath to comment, but Izzy holds up her hand, stopping her.
"Tyler is going to help you pick out jeans and a button-up," Izzy tells me.
I wince. "Probably just a button-up. I can't afford both."
Izzy smiles and fishes two one hundred dollar bills out of her purse. "I'm your sponsor today."
I back away from her. "No way, I can't take your money."
Katie places her arm on my shoulder. "Just Wyatt, it's okay her dad is a millionaire."
"Yeah, he feels guilty about only seeing me every other month so he makes sure I have plenty of money," Izzy says with a smile that looks forced.
I still don't take the money and Izzy rolls her eyes while shoving it into my hand.
"I'm buying you dinner," I tell her.
"Whatever you say." Izzy sings as Katie and her walk hand in hand towards the mall.
Izzy suddenly stops and walks back towards Tyler. She grabs the front of his shirt and plants a very passionate kiss on his lips.
I glance at Katie and she pretends to dry heave.
Izzy pulls away from him and the look in her eyes is full of love and adoration. "I'm so sorry I got mad at you this morning."
Tyler runs his thumb across her cheek. "You have nothing to apologize for. I'm the one that didn't text you."
"Your right, since football started I've barely made time for you and-"
Izzy interrupts him by placing her finger on his lips. "You apologized this morning and I should have accepted it and gone on, not stay mad at you all day. We will work on making time for each other, together."
Tyler places his forehead against hers. "I'm sorry."
Izzy sighs slightly. "Me too."
They pull away and she kisses him quickly on the lips and walks towards the mall.
I stare at her stunned then look at Tyler who looks like he just won a million bucks.
"One word. Communication," Tyler states then follows after them.
