Chapter 39: Bromance vibes are stong
Katie
Ah yes, it's a beautiful start to another week. Yup, it's Monday.
After I rode on Titan Izzy texted me saying she got breakfast from McDonald's.
After I got changed I met her in the cafeteria to eat.
"I just knew you were going to fall for Wyatt," Izzy says smiling.
I glare at her. Sunday night I told her all about my 'newfound feelings for Wyatt'. (Her words, not mine.)
"Iz, it's just a teeny tiny, microscopic crush. Like a crush you have on a celebrity say Miles Teller for example."
Izzy shakes her head. "You know who's hot?"
"Pedro Pascal."
I grin. "Yes! But still Miles Teller-" I finish my sentence by thumping my hand over my heart.
Izzy giggles. "What is it with you and that man?"
I sigh. "It's probably the mustache."
"I see it in your eyes when Wyatts around, Katie you're falling for him." Izzy never gets sidetracked, unfortunately.
"It's not a bad thing, it's good." She adds quickly.
"I am not!" I say frustrated.
"Well, you better sort those feelings out soon because it looks like you have competition."
"What!" I spin around and see Wyatt and Tyler walking in with their arms around each other.
I see Izzy smirking and wiggling her eyebrows.
I roll my eyes. "I really don't know why I'm friends with you."
"No Ty-Ty Batman is the most useless superhero," Wyatt argues. Wyatt's called Tyler by that nickname ever since Waffle House.
"He is not!" Tyler fires back.
"I'm starting to feel like the other woman in this relationship," Izzy mutters.
We're eating lunch. Tyler and Wyatt have been talking nonstop.
"Yeah, the bromance vibes are strong," I say sarcastically.
Tyler smirks. "Kat's just jealous that her 'boyfriend' likes me more."
I roll my eyes and Wyatt smiles at me. "Baby, you know your my one and only right?"
"Oh my gosh." I groan and Wyatt pulls me to his side, ruffling my hair.
"I have a question. Tyler, if you had to date one of your few male friends which one would you?" Izzy asks as she munches on baby carrots.
"I have many male friends," Tyler says defensively.
"Sure you do." I sarcastically remark.
"I do see there's Mark an-" Izzy waves her hand interrupting Tyler.
"Don't start arguing, just answer my question."
I smirk at Tyler. He scratches his chin. "I would have to say... Wyatt."
Izzy and I give him a dumbstruck look and Wyatt's ears turn red. "Er, thanks, man."
"Derek is going to be pissed," I say while shaking my head.
Tyler being Tyler steals one of Izzy's carrots and continues on the subject; further embarrassing Wyatt.
"Don't get me wrong I love Derek. He's my best friend, but he's too bulky for my taste. Wyatt has muscle, but he's leaner. He doesn't look like a walking bolder."
Tyler does have a point.
I laugh so hard I start crying, Izzy looks disgusted and Wyatt's whole face is beet red.
"Are you sure you're on the right team?" I squeak out in between laughs.
Tyler just grins. "Yeah, I love women way too much."
Izzy rolls her eyes. "Leave it to you to make everything perverted."
I don't say anything, but the fact that my friends (Tyler and Izzy) liked Wyatt so much warmed my heart and made me like him even more.
Crap, Izzy is right! I am faking for him.
Wyatt
After school, I walk Katie to her car. "Katie I'll meet y'all at the barn!" Izzy yells across the parking lot.
Katie gives her a thumbs up. Today is my third riding lesson and Izzy is coming to 'help'.
Katie said I'm having a lunge lesson. Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.
"I have to change clothes and then I'll meet you at your house," Katie tells me once we reach her truck.
"Okay." I pull her in for a quick hug and kiss the top of her head.
I freeze once I realize what I just did. I didn't even think twice about it, I just kissed the top of her head.
Crap! I take my arm off her and step back. She gives me a weird look and unlocks her car. Okay, good she didn't notice.
I jump in the car and drive to my house. While I'm waiting outside for Katie. I scroll through my camera roll.
I look at all of the pictures of Katie and me. I think my favorite is one of us walking home from the Icecream parlor. Izzy made us take tons of pictures since she said this was probably the only time Katie would let me give her a piggyback ride.
She pulls up and I walk to her window. "Can I drive?" I ask.
She raises her eyebrows. "Uh, sure?"
She gets out and I watch her walk to the passenger side. Well, I would say I watched her bottom half walk to the passenger side.
She is wearing riding tights and let's just say they are tight in all the right places.
Every time I've had a lesson so far she would wear jeans. This is the first time I've ever seen her in tights and I hope it's not the last.
If she whore those to school she would have every single guy chasing her down including me.
Katie
"It stalls out easily so you have to be gentle with the gas," I tell Wyatt. I have no idea why he wants to drive my truck.
I would be lying if I didn't say it's kind of hot seeing him drive my truck wearing jeans and boots.
"Baby, my dad was a mechanic. I'm pretty sure I can drive anything." Wyatt says arrogantly.
*Five minutes later*
"Kate why is the truck not moving," Wyatt asks frustrated.
"Sweetie, it's not all the way in gear," I say like I'm talking to a baby.
"It is. See the needle is pointing at R." He whines.
I sigh. "My truck is old and it's not accurate. When you feel the truck rock backward then you know it's in reverse." I say.
Wyatt pulls down on the gear stick till the truck clunks backward. He backs out of the driveway silently.
"Baby, my dad was a mechanic, I can drive anything," I say in a deep voice mocking Wyatt.
"See, I didn't do too bad," Wyatt exclaims after he parks my truck in front of the barn.
"You stalled my truck out at two separate stop signs and almost rear-ended a minivan," I say dryly.
Wyatt rubs the back of his neck. "That mini pulled out in front of me so it wouldn't have been my fault."
"If there are any problems that occur in the near future I'm sending you the bill," I say as I climb out of the truck.
Wyatt helps me get Sammy groomed and tacked up.
"I'm so sorry I got held up, but I'm here now," Izzy says out of breath. She is twenty minutes late.
"Held up or were you and Tyler sucking face?" I ask as I lead Sammy into the arena.
Wyatt chuckles and Izzy glares at me.
"Alrighty, today you're moving up a speed and learning to canter. Learning to canter can be a little difficult so that's why I'm going to be giving you a lunge lesson."
Wyatt squints his eyes because of the sun. "Kate, what the hell do you mean by that?"
"I'm going to have Sammy connected to a long rope or what we call a lunge line."
"I will have complete control over him the whole time."
Izzy walks over and takes Sammy from me. "I'm going to ride first so you can copy what I do."
I walk over to Sammy, snap on my helmet, and hop on.
Izzy flicks the whip and Sammy starts walking in a circle.
Twenty minutes later I get off so Wyatt can have a go. "You think you can do this?"
Wyatt looks down at me. "Yes, I can do this Kate."
I take the lunge line from Izzy and Sammy starts waking in a circle. Wyatt walks and trots in both directions.
I have him stick his arms out or fold them across his chest to work on balance.
"You ready to canter?" I ask.
Wyatt takes a deep breath. "I guess."
"All you have to do is sit there. I have complete control over Sam." I say reassuringly.
"And canter," I tell Sammy with a flick of the whip.
Sammy gets two strides in and Wyatt yanks on the reins. "Whoa!"
"I can't do this!"
Sammy stops abruptly throwing Wyatt forward causing him to almost fall off. "Wyatt, are you okay?" I yell.
He doesn't respond so I walk up to him and he's staring at the ground. "Kate you have the wrong man for this."
"Who am I kidding I can't do this. I should have never agreed to this." I place my hand on his leg to stop his rambling.
"Wyatt, do you know what you did wrong?" I ask softly.
He glares at me. "Yanked on the reins?" I shake my head.
"Freak out and yell Whoa," I shake my head again.
"I don't know Katie?" Wyatt snaps.
I sigh. "You leaned forward when you got nervous so when Sammy staring cantering you lost your balance."
Wyatt gives me a dead look. "I'm done."
He starts to take his feet out of his stirrups.
"Wyatt, I didn't peg you as a quitter," I say with my hands on my hips.
He stops. "Katie, I can't do this."
"You don't know till you try," I say sternly.
"I did try and look where it got me!" He fires back.
"So what. Are you going to give up because you messed up once?"
He just stares at the ground and I get an idea.
"Wyatt I could do this with my eyes closed without a saddle or reins," I say smirking.
I see Wyatt fighting I grin. "If I try one more time you have to prove to me you can do that."
Bingo. Sometimes men are like five-year-olds.
"Deal."
He tries again and canters around like he's been doing it for years. For the first time since we agreed to date, I think we might just have a shot at winning the endurance ride.
Thirty minutes later and Wyatt can canter two laps around the arena all by himself.
"Look at you cowboy," I yell to Wyatt.
"Your turn missy," Wyatt yells out of breath.
Oh yeah.
