Chapter 36: The Grand Slam Meal

Wyatt
"Katie, are you riding with Wyatt?" Izzy asks.

"Yeah," Katie responds.

Izzy walks over to me wearing a concerned look. "Can I talk to you about something real quick?"

I feel my brow scrunch. "Yeah?"

Katie waves and walks to my car. "I'll be at the car."

"What's up?"

Izzy takes a deep breath. "How well could you see Katie and her family from the football field?"

"Pretty well, why?" Where is she going with this?

"Did Mike and Clair seem overly friendly to you?"

I feel my eyes widen. "Yes! I thought I was the only one who noticed."

"Are they always like that?"

Izzy shakes her head. "No, not until recently. I've known them both for a while, and they have never acted like that."

I raise my eyebrows. "You think something's going on between them?"

"I don't know?"

"Maybe, I'm not sure," Izzy adds quietly.

"Are you going to say anything to Tyler?"

Izzy eyes widen. "Lord no! I don't think they suspect anything."

I nod my head. "Okay."

We walk back to the cars. I hop into my Jeep and Izzy rides with Tyler.

The whole ride to Waffle House Katie and I talk back and forth about the game.

Katie
We're the last ones to pull into the Waffle House parking lot. Once Wyatt parks the car he turns it off and leaps out the door.

Knowing what's he about to do I grab my phone and open my door. Wyatt is standing in front of me frowning, so I can't get out of the Jeep.

"Why Kate, why?"

I smirk. "I have hands, I can open my own door."

Wyatt rolls his eyes. "So, let me be a gentleman for once." I push him out of the way and hop down.

"Nope, I'm an independent woman."

Wyatt laughs and mumbles. "No, you're stubborn as a mule."

The wind blows frigid air around us. I wrap my arms around me to block off said air. I should have bought a coat.

"Kate, do you need a coat?" I shake my head.

Wyatt rolls his eyes and opens his trunk.

"No seriously, I'm good," I say quickly.

"Sure you are," Wyatt says sarcastically.

Wyatt pulls out a black hoodie that looks like it was bleached dyed. "Here wear this."

I see that back and it has, 'Vans' written across it. I've seen him wear it a lot at school over the years.

"Wyatt, no, I-" Wyatt stops me by pulling the hoodie over my shoulders.

I sigh and I hear him chuckling. "Let me help you put your arms through, baby."

I pull my head through and glare at him which causes him to laugh harder.

I hold my arms out. "You're not going to be embarrassed to be seen with me?"

"This hoodie is huge on me!" The sleeves hang off my arms and the bottom almost covers my skirt.

Wyatt smiles with his eyes twinkling. "No, I think you look cute."

I stare at him stunned and he pulls me into Waffle House.

"The kids can sit here. Claire and I will sit at the bar." My dad tells the waitress.

Derek and Ava sit down and Izzy sits beside Derek, Tyler plops down across from Izzy.

"Wyatt do not let Katie sit beside Tyler," Izzy tells Wyatt very seriously.

Wyatt sits down beside Tyler and I sit beside Wyatt.

"Why can't they sit beside each other?" Wyatt asks.

"Let's just say they're the reason we can't go to the Chick-fil-A beside school," Derek says as he flips through the menu.

"We're not that bad," I say rolling my eyes.

"Whatever." Izzy and Derek say at the same time.

"What are you getting?" Wyatt asks Tyler.

"The Grand Slam meal."

I lean forward so Tyler can see me. "That's a lot of calories you know." I pat my stomach.

The Grand Slam comes with, eggs, meat, grits, toast, waffle, and coffee.

Izzy giggles and Tyler scowls. "I have you know I am of average weight, Kat."

I laugh. "Ty-Ty I'm kidding."

Wyatt raises his eyebrows. "Ty-Ty?"

Tyler groans and puts his head in his hands. "It's a stupid name they use to call me."

"Correction we would only call you that when you were mad."

Izzy smiles at my comment. "Yeah, you would get so mad."

The waitress comes and we all order our meals.
I order blueberry waffles and Wyatt orders plain waffles.

I throw a napkin at Tyler's head and he looks at me glaring.

I shrug my shoulders.

The waitress comes back with our drinks. "Excuse me, ma'am, but she needs a sippy cup. Like one you would give to a toddler." Tyler says pointing at me.

I grin. "Now Tyler don't be embarrassed, we all have accidents."

I turn my gaze to the waitress. "He is the one who needs it. He's just embarrassed to ask." Tyler blushes bright red, and the waitress nods her head in understanding.

She walks to the counter and comes back with a child's cup and gives it to Tyler. Once she walks away we all burst out in laughter.

"Why the hatred between these two?" Ava asks, pointing from me to Tyler.

Derek laughs and I shot him a glare.

"Tyler is just really fun to piss off."

"Pissing Kat off makes my day." Tyler and I  say at the same time.

"Me and Kats bickering is nothing compared to Derek and Izzy's pranks they used to pull on each other," Tyler says taking a sip of water.

"Yeah, I remember that time Izzy put red food dye in my shampoo thinking it was Derek's and I was red for a week," I say glaring at Izzy.

Wyatt laughs. "I didn't peg you for the prankster, Iz."

"Katie may be the comeback queen, but I'm the prank master," Izzy says smugly.

"Hey, my pranks were pretty good," Derek says defensively and Izzy looks at Derek.

"Putting pepper in someone's bed is not creative."

Derek cringes. "Not my brightest moment."

"Why did you stop, you never got me back?" Izzy asks Derek.

"Because Tyler made me stop after y'all started dating."

We all laugh.

"Well, now I always check my shampoo before I use it," I say looking at the menu.

While we wait for our food Wyatt takes my phone off my lap. "What are you doing?" I whisper.

"Taking a picture of us, my phone is dead."

Wyatt wraps his arm around me and we take a few selfies. Then he starts scrolling through my camera roll.

He stops on a picture of me in polar bear pajamas and my hair up in a messy bun. Im glaring at the camera.

I vividly remember when that picture was taken. Tyler got my phone one Saturday morning and started taking random pictures of me after he woke me up by banging pots and pans together.

"What is this beauty?" Wyatt asks smirking.

"It called, time to give Katie her phone back." I rip the phone out of his hand.

"Good lord, I am full," Tyler says, leaning back in his chair.

"God, I hope so." Izzy deadpans, causing Tyler to roll his eyes.

I have one last piece of my waffle left and Wyatt eats it off my plate.

"What the actual hell!" I snap glaring at him.

"What?" Wyatt asks innocently.

I push his chest. "That was my last piece, you ass!"

"Katie Grace Fleming watch your mouth!" Clair yells from the bar.

Wyatt snickers. "Baby, you look so cute when you blush."

I'm pretty sure my face is beet red at this point.

We all finish eating and walk to the cars.

"I have to say Tyler, watching you eat that Grand Slam meal was a surreal experience," Ava says from Derek's side.

We all laugh. "It was like watching a pig lick up its morning slop," I say grinning.

Tyler rolls his eyes and everyone laughs harder.

We tell everyone bye then me and Wyatt get in his car. "Kate, your family is the best."

"Yeah, well it's more fun with you there."

Wyatt's ears turn red and I realize what I just admitted. Sometimes when I'm around Wyatt I can't keep things to myself.

Wyatt clears his throat. "What did you think of Ava?" I've met her before, but this is my first time spending time with her.

"I like her a lot. She seems good for Derek."

Wyatt and I talk the rest of the way home.

"I had fun," I say softly.

"Yeah me too."

Wyatt eyes flick from my eye to my lips. I take a deep breath and open the car door. "I'll see you later, Just Wyatt."

I can't let him kiss me, because then it would be impossible to get over my crush.

Thoughts on this chapter??

What do y'all think is going on with Mike and Clair?! 😏
