Chapter 35: A good excuse to kiss her
Wyatt
I'm currently staring at Katie's text on my phone. Her family is coming to watch the game.
I feel the color drain from my face and my legs start shaking.
I don't even notice Ryan sit down beside me till he touches my shoulder.
"You okay man?"
I nod. "Yeah, I'm great."
Ryan frowns and I remember what Katie told me.
"Actually, Katie texted me saying her family's coming." Ryan nods his head in understanding.
"Wyatt, Katie's a great girl; you deserve her, so don't push her away. Enjoy yourself."
I smile slightly. "You're right."
"Duh," Ryan says and sticks his tongue out.
I walk out of the locker room in search of Katie, but all I see is Tyler talking with Katie's dad and a woman who I'm assuming is his mom.
I suddenly hear, "boo!" I jump, and Katie snickers.
When I turn around, all aggravation leaves my face and my jaws hit the floor.
Katie looks stunning, she is wearing my jersey, and a white skirt, paired with sandals. She even number painted the number seventeen on her cheeks.
"Just Wyatt, if you keep your mouth open like that you're going to swallow a fly."
I close my mouth and scratch the back of my neck. "You look... wow. I mean hot. No wait-"
I stumble out till Katie interrupts me.
"Never in my life did I think I would make Wyatt Kent stumble over his words."
I sigh and pull Katie to my chest. My arms wrap around her, and rest my chin on her head.
"You look amazing," I say against the top of her head.
"You don't look too bad yourself," Katie says.
I smirk and pull away from her slightly. "So, you find all this football gear hot."
Now it was my turn to embarrass her, but she just grins.
"Yeah, I do." She says with complete seriousness and pulls me toward her family.
Huh. Normally she rolls her eyes when I joke like that. What changed?
"Hey Wyatt, how are you doing?" Mike asks me while shaking my hand.
"I'm doing pretty good."
The woman Tyler was talking to pushes Mike out of the way.
"So, you must be Wyatt who I've heard so much about."
I chuckle nervously. I guess Katie could tell Im nervous because she wraps her arm around my waist, snuggling into my side.
"I'm Clair."
"And Tyler's mom, but she seems to forget that," Tyler yells from behind her.
"I do not, and you know I love you," Clair says pinching Tyler's cheeks.
Izzy laughs.
We all talk for a few minutes till the coach blows his whistle telling us it's time to warm up.
"I'll see you later honey," Tyler tells Izzy before he kisses her and runs to the field.
The rest of Katie's family yells a mix of "Good lucks and Be careful" and walks to the bleachers.
I turn towards Katie and fund her staring at me with those big green eyes.
I try to come up with a good excuse to kiss her, but before I can she leans up and kisses my cheek.
"Im rooting for you, Muriel."
I laugh. "Thanks, but I think you should kiss the other cheek for good luck."
Katie rolls her eyes and walks away.
"I think you'll be just fine," Katie yells over her shoulder.
"You coming, Cap?"
"Yeah." I jog to the field.
Katie
"What's with that grin?" Derek asks as I sit down beside him.
I raise my eyebrows. "I don't know what you're talking about?"
Derek looks out at the field. "I think it has to do with a certain someone."
I sigh. "Is it that noticeable?"
Derek laughs. "No, but I know you better than you know yourself."
I sigh. "Derek, I think I might kind of, maybe sort of like him a little bit."
Derek laughs and I shot him a glare and point to Dad and Clair who are sitting in front of us.
"Why are you laughing? Aren't you supposed to tell me how bad a guy he is and how I should never talk to the male species?"
That makes Derek laugh even harder. "Normally I would, but I like Wyatt. He's a good guy."
"What do I do?" I groan while placing my head in my hands.
"Nothing. Y'all agreed to a date for four weeks. Let everything play out and see what happens. You never know Gracie, he might have feelings for you."
I roll my eyes and shove his shoulder.
"Wow."
"What?" Derek asks coldly.
"When did you get so wise?"
Derek grins. "Sis, I've always been wise. What can I say, when the package is this pretty no one cares about what's inside."
I laugh.
"Why do you keep checking your phone?" I ask Derek.
"Ava is coming and I had to tell her where we're at."
I feel my eyes widen. "Ava?"
"Earlier today I forgot she was coming with me to get my cast off, so she and Dad kind of met."
"He wasn't mad that you hid your girlfriend from him for a month?"
"Surprisingly, no."
"Hey babe, hey Katie," Ava says sitting down beside Derek.
"Hey, Ava."
I don't think she hears me because Derek said something to make her laugh.
When half-time comes I go to the bottom of the stands to film Izzy's dance.
The song Hot n Cold by Katy Perry starts blasting and the whole dance team runs out onto the field.
I easily spot Izzy in the middle. I aimed the phone at her.
I notice one of the football players behind them is dancing along.
He turns around and I see it's Tyler.
I put a hand over my mouth to keep from laughing.
Once the song finishes the dance team runs off the field so the cheerleaders can perform.
I text Izzy the video and walk back to my seat.
It's down to the last minute and our team is down by one point. All they need is a touchdown or a field goal.
They have one more chance to get the ball to the end zone. The whistle blows and the ball is snapped to Wyatt.
Ryan starts running down the field and right before Wyatt throws the ball he gets tackled.
I stand up to try and see if Wyatt's okay. Wyatt stands up, and I let out a long breath.
There are ten seconds left, and Tyler runs out onto the field. I see Wyatt pat him on the back.
I've never seen Tyler make the kick from this far.
Everyone gets in position and Derek grabs my hand.
Tyler runs up to the ball, kicks it and the ball flies straight through the goalposts.
Everyone screams. My dad turns and hugs a crying Clair and Derek plants a kiss smack dab on Ava's lips.
The whole football team runs onto the field swarming Tyler. I see Wyatt and another guy lift Tyler onto their shoulders and they start chanting, "Loch-ner!"
Tyler sees the guy that tackled Wyatt and flips him off.
We make our way down the stands and to the locker rooms.
Izzy comes running from the school. She bends over, placing her hands on her knees.
"You okay, Iz?" Derek asks.
"Yeah, I just want to be here when Ty comes out."
Izzy is wearing leggings and one of Tyler's sweatshirts. Her hair is still in a sleek ponytail braid.
Izzy looks up and sees Tyler come out of the locker room.
She runs and jumps onto him. He stumbles backward a step, and then they kiss very... passionately.
I look away and the lemonade I drank earlier threatens to make a reappearance.
My dad clears his throat loudly causing Izzy to unwrap her legs that are wrapped around Tyler and slide to the ground.
Izzy's face is blood red, but Tyler just grins.
"Ty, you did so well!" Clair yells and hugs Tyler.
"Yeah, you did good, Ty." My dad says patting Tyler's shoulder.
"Dude, that was awesome!" Derek yells and they hug.
Tyler looks at me and I give him a confused look. "That was you?"
"I thought it was some other guy that kicked the winning field goal."
Tyler grins. "Kat, can you never just compliment me?"
I grin. "You did good, Tyler."
"Oh, and thanks for telling Derek that I encouraged this whole thing with you and Wyatt," Tyler says fake smiling.
I give him an innocent grin.
He pulls me in for a side hug, but I see a certain someone with brown hair walk out of the locker rooms.
I push away from Tyler and jog up to Wyatt.
I hear Tyler mumble. "Seriously?"
Wyatt smiles a huge lopsided smile and I wrap my arms around his neck to hug him.
He hugs me back lifting me off the ground.
Once he sits me down I look him up and down. he's wearing jeans and a black shirt with his letterman jacket over it.
"I know, it's a lot to take in," Wyatt says, smirking.
I roll my eyes and walk away but Wyatt runs up behind me and slings his arm over my shoulders. "Baby, I'm sorry, I was joking."
I laugh. "What am I going to do with you?"
"I don't know, but I think you should have kissed my other cheek before the game."
I roll my eyes. "You want to know something?"
"What?" Wyatt asks, his eyes twinkling.
"You're an ass!"
"Yeah, but you love it."
Wyatt
"Good job, Wyatt," Izzy says from Tyler's side.
"Good job, Kid," Mike says patting my shoulder.
"When the jackass tackled you they should have thrown a flag," Derek says.
"Derek Miles Fleming watch your mouth!" Clair exclaims causing Derek to flinch.
"But that was some play even though you were tackled," Mike says trying to keep a straight face.
"I can't take any of the credit, if it wasn't for Tyler we would have lost."
"Wow, I think hell might have just frozen over; Tyler saved the day," Katie says sarcastically.
Tyler flips Katie off and Clair smacks his chest and everyone starts talking back and forth.
"Are you Wyatt Kent?" I turn around to see a middle age man standing behind me.
I walk closer to him, dragging Katie along beside me.
"Yes, I'm Wyatt."
The man smiles. "Good, I'm Tim. I work for Clearbrook College and I'm the head football scout."
"Look, I'm going to shoot you straight, you got talent kid. We would love to offer you a full-ride scholarship, and the starting quarterback position. I know our football team is mediocre, and I'm sure you have tons of other offers, but we would love it if you considered us."
I sigh and scratch the back of my neck. "I'm sorry but I'm-"
"He'll think about it," Katie says interrupting me.
I glare at her, but she ignores me. "And who might you be?" Tim asks confused.
"It doesn't-"
"Katie Fleming, my girlfriend." It's my turn to interrupt her.
Tim's eyebrows scrunch together. "Huh, that name sounds familiar."
"Katie applied for a scholarship, and a position on the riding team." Katie pinches my side, I just shrug my shoulders.
"Ahhh yes; your dad is a college professor at the community college," Tim says and Katie nods her head.
"Well, I'll put in a good word for you. Here's my card. Call me if you're interested in touring the college, and we can set up a time."
I take the card from him.
Once he walks away I glare at Katie.
"You can be mad all you want, but I just did you a favor."
I groan. "But Kate-"
"Look Wyatt, it's not going to hurt you to think about it. Like he said their football team isn't that good, but now you're going to get tons of offers from other colleges once they hear about Clearbrook wanting you."
I look Katie in the eyes. "I don't know if I want to even go."
She stares right back into mine. "You don't have to make any decisions yet, just promise me you'll think about it."
I sigh. "I promise."
"Who wants to get dinner at Waffle House!" Mike yells.
Katie grins. "Come on, I'm hungry."
