Chapter 24: I kissed a girl

Wyatt
Katie stops the truck in front of a small building that I assume is Sam's Hotdog Stand.

I glance over at Katie catching her fixing her hair in the rearview mirror.

She is wearing a T-shirt that's cut into a tank top and a ball cap that has 'nope' written across the front.

Country girls have never been my type, but seeing Katie today I stopped breathing. She looked hot!

I never thought I would ever think this, but watching her today, damn.

"Alright Just Wyatt, you ready?" I nod my head.

I follow Katie inside with Logan at my heels. (Logan is Katie's dog.) I guess they allow dogs in here.

When I open the door a bell rings, and a middle-aged man pops up from behind the bar.

I look around the restaurant, there is a bar in the middle, and around it there are tables, and along the back wall are four booths.

"Katie!" The middle-aged man yells.

"Hey, Sam how are you!"

So he must be Sam.

"Pretty good. Today has been a little slow." Sam tells Katie.

He looks me up and down smiling.

Katie hugs my arm. "Sam, this is my boyfriend Wyatt."

I thought it wasn't possible, but Sam smiles even bigger. "Luckily for you Katie, your favorite booth is open."

Katie smiles and we follow him to our table.

We sit down across from each other.

"Your waiter we'll be with y'all shortly," Sam informs us.

I shake my head laughing and Katie looks at me confused. "Kate, never in my life did I think I would be sharing a table with a dog."

Logan is sitting beside Katie. He looks like a person waiting for their food.

"They only sell hotdogs and pinto beans here."
Katie tells me with a serious look. I nod my head.

I wanted to ask her how she knows Sam but I didn't want to overstep.

Ah, screw it. "How do you know Sam?"

"Me and Izzy come here all the time after the barn. Sam was friends with my mom before she died. He's the reason my dad and my mom started dating."

I look at Katie curious.

"He was best friends with my mom in college and he set her and my dad up on a date. Two years later they got married."  Katie says smiling.

I take my phone out of my pocket. "Kate smile."

Her cheeks blush red, I love it when she blushes. While we wait for our waiter we take turns taking pictures of each other.

After the waiter comes we both order our food.

Katie suddenly looks at me very seriously.
"Just Wyatt, I want to know more about you."

I choke on my water. "What do you want to know exactly?"

Katie makes a duh face. "Stuff like your favorite color, movie, or food."

"You know basic knowledge a girl would know about her boyfriend," Katie adds.

I place my elbows on the table. "How about we take turns asking each other questions."

Katie sets her drink down. "I ask first."
I motion with my hand for her to ask.

"Favorite color?"

I wanted to say the color of her eyes but I didn't want to sound creepy.

"Green. Yours?"

Katie thinks for a second. "Light purple and orange. Not bright orange, sunset orange."

Wow, now I feel boring.

"Kate, what's your favorite movie?"

Her eyes twinkle. "Sweet Home Alabama, both Top Gun movies and Twilight New Moon."

She is very specific.

"Good choices. Mine would have to be Dumb and dumber." I reply.

Kate grins. "Really not-"

I interrupt her before she can finish. "No, those are not my favorite movies."

I knew she was going to ask, "Not the To all the boys I've loved before movies?" I knew I was going to regret saying I watched those.

It's Katie's turn to ask. "I've been wondering about this for a while. Why does Stacy suddenly have the hots for you?"

"I know it can't be your charming good looks and arrogant attitude."

I smile flirtatiously. "So, you do think I have charming good looks." She throws straw trash at me.

"I'm serious Kent. I know she didn't just suddenly wake up and think, I want to have Wyatt all to myself."

Katie is ruthless.

"If you have to know," I say sarcastically.

"I went to a party right before the school year started. It was the second anniversary of my dad's death and I was not in a great mindset.
I may have made out with Stacy a little."
I say with my head down not wanting to see Katie's smug look.

I hear Katie die with laughter. I look up to see her wiping tears from her eyes. "I'm sorry Wyatt, I really am, but are you that dumb?" Katie asks still giggling.

I put my head in my hands and groan. "I'm not proud of it, okay?"

Katie finally gains control of herself. "Please tell me you weren't sober when you made that decision."

"I don't drink."

Katie grins so wide that she looks like the Cheshire cat. "You are dumber than you look!"

"I am a little concerned that I'm not the only girl you have grabbed and kissed."

I smile at her teasing. "She actually came on to me."

Katie raises her eyebrows. "Oh okay, good to know."

I chuckle. "It was a one-time thing, that I regretted instantly. I told her it didn't mean anything, but Stacy fell head over heels."

I spread my arms out and smile arrogantly.
"What can I say, I'm pretty irresistible."

Katie smiles but it doesn't quite reach her eyes. "Well, aren't you a little heartbreaker?"

Wait what? No, that's not what I meant.
"That's not what I meant. I was in a depressed mood and Stacy took advantage of that."

Katie's eyes soften. "Well, at least it was a one-time thing."

I smile. "Thank God."

We keep taking turns asking each other questions till our waitress brings our food.

We both ordered three hotdogs and a cup of pinto beans. "Mmmm." I hum as I eat my hotdog.

Katie smiles. "I told you they are good."

I eat all three of my hotdogs and my pinto beans and Katie still had one hotdog left.

"You can have it, Just Wyatt." She must have seen me staring.

Thirty minutes later the waiter brings our check. I ended up eating five hotdogs, while Katie sat there watching me.

Katie grabs the check before I could. "Kate, your not paying."

She stands up, but I grab her hand before she could leave. "Wyatt let me pay, you paid last night so now it's my turn."

Her eyes soften. "It's the least I could do after you helped me today."

I start to say something but Katie interrupts me. "Besides I get a fifty percent discount."

She is so stubborn. I let go of her hand.
I can't believe I'm letting her pay. My dad would kill me.

"Fine, but I pay next time," I say sternly.

She smiles knowing she won. "Deal."

After Katie pays we leave and hop into her truck. I feel my pride take a hit not only did I let her pay but she also drove me around all day.

I'm sorry Dad it's not my fault she's as stubborn as a mule. I think.

Katie turns on the radio and the song Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker is playing.

"Kent, you have to know this one," Katie says.

I laugh and turn the volume up. "Please Kate, this is a classic."

We sing the whole way home, Katie knows every word to every song and I did my best to keep up.

Finally, Katie caved and let me change the station to something  I listen to.

I filmed her singing I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry without her knowing and sent it in the group chat I was in with Izzy, Tyler, Katie, and Derek.

Katie is the sweetest, most funniest girl I know. She could always make me smile and she was so easy to talk to.

When we pull up to my house and I remember what awaited me inside.

I have a whole house to clean.

"Wyatt, what are you going to?" Katie looks at me curiously.

I give her a tired smile. "Clean." Katie nods her head in understanding.

I pat Logan goodbye. "I'll see you later, Kate."

Where I live we have a restaurant called Bolin's hotdog stand that's where I got my idea from.

They only sell hotdogs and pinto beans!
