Chapter 18: Football stuff

Kate
The next day

I get to school a little earlier than I usually do because I have a surprise for Wyatt.

I texted Ryan last night and asked him what Wyatt's favorite doughnut is.

On my way to school this morning I stopped at Dunkin' Donuts and got him two glazed donuts with strawberry icing and sprinkles.

I watched him very carefully yesterday when he unlocked his locker, so hopefully, I remember correctly.

Three tries later and I finally get it open. His locker is surprisingly clean.

I place the bag in his locker with a note beside it saying,

Dearest Kent,
I hope you enjoy these...
(Yeah, that's right, open the bag to find out what it is 😝.)
I can be sneaky too, Just Wyatt.
-Yours truly, Katie.

I hope it makes him feel as happy as it made me.

I'm walking to my second class when I get a text from Wyatt.

Just Wyatt: How did you know these are my fav!!!!

I giggle and respond.

Me: I can be sneaky too!

I see my teacher come in so I hide my phone behind a book.

Great idea Katie, text your 'boyfriend' instead of listening to your teacher. Maybe I should put this on my college essay. I'm sure they would love this.

Just Wyatt: You are the best!😍❤️.

Me: (dramatic hair flip) I know, but thanks for reminding me!

Just Wyatt: 🙄

I didn't see Wyatt the rest of the school day because he had football stuff. It was their first game of the school year, but we did text almost all day.

I drive to Izzy's house to get ready for the game. Normally Izzy would be at the school getting ready because she's on the dance team but this game is away so she doesn't have to dance.

I'm greeted by Izzy's little sister Tina. Izzy also has an older brother.

(The one that's leaving for the military the day of the endurance ride, hence the reason me and Wyatt are 'dating'.)

Tina is her half-sister, Izzy's parents got divorced when she was younger. When her mother remarried they had a little girl together.

At first, Izzy didn't like her stepdad but over time she excepted him.

Her dad lives a few hours away but comes and stays with Izzy and her family for every holiday, birthday, and even sometimes just to visit. She's lucky her parents didn't have a messy divorce and they still get along.

"Katy!" Tina yells.

One day she heard Tyler call me Kat and she thought it was the coolest name ever so... she started calling me Kat too.

Let's just say Tyler is weird when it comes to nicknames. I've never asked him why he calls me Kat, but when he heard Tina call me Kat he was madder than a hornet. He had a very long talk with Tina and now she calls me Katy.

I hear Izzy yell, "Katie, I'm in my room!" I go up to her room with Tina following close behind me.

When I open her door I see her standing in front of a full-length mirror curling her hair.

"Good Katie, you're here. I need you to choose one of the outfits on the bed," Izzy huffs.

Tina sits down in Izzy's desk chair.

"Iz, you know I'm horrible at this stuff,"
I whine.

I hear her breathe in frustration. I don't blame her I can act very childlike.

"I know Katie, but pick one!" I chose the jeans with Checker vans on top.

Izzy mumbles, "Last piece," and unplugs her curling iron.

"I knew you would pick that outfit, but I'm wearing the skirt and wedged sandals."

I flop down on her bed and sigh. "Then why did you ask me?" She just shrugs her shoulders.

Izzy can be so weird sometimes. I guess that's
one thing Tyler and her have in common.

Izzy turns to her sister. "Tina, what do you think, this lipgloss or this one?" She holds up two lipglosses that to me look like the same shade.

I've made the mistake of saying that and I got a ten-minute lecture on how there are indeed, two totally different shades.

Unfortunately, I don't get to hear Tina's answer because I get a phone call from Wyatt.

"Hello?"

"Hi Katie, where are you?" He sounds like he's in a car.

"I'm at Izzy's getting ready, why?"

There's silence for a few moments till he asks, "Hey, what are you wearing?"

I feel my cheeks heat.

"Um?" Is all that comes out.

I hear him chuckle. "I mean, Katie do you have a jersey to wear?"

Oh. I breathe a sigh of relief.

"Yeah, I have one of Derek's old jerseys to wear."

I always wore one of his when I went to their games over the past three years.

Izzy would wear one of Tyler's and I would wear one of Derek's.

"Okay Kate, I'll see you there."

"Alright, bye."

We finish getting ready with Tina's help.

We stand in front of Izzy's mirror to take a picture. Izzy's wearing a black tennis skirt with wedge sandals and one of Tyler's jerseys. (Which is dark gray and light blue.)
Her black hair is curled in loose waves.

Izzy looks amazing in almost everything she wears. Her mother is Spanish, so Izzy was gifted with tan skin and black hair with soft curls.

Her hair is the type of hair that you could wear straight or could let dry naturally curly and it will look amazing. She also got her height from her mom. She stood 5/1 and could wear any heel she wanted.

I always feel like the jolly green giant standing beside her, even though I'm not that tall.
Izzy is absolutely perfect in every way, inside and outside.

I'm wearing jean shorts with cowgirl boots and one of Derek's old jerseys, my hair is still curled from yesterday so I left it.

We get in Izzy's car and drive to the game.
"Geez, we're here thirty minutes early and there is still no parking." Izzy snaps.

Izzy has a bad case of road rage, like really bad. She almost followed someone to the mall just so she could give them a lesson on how to yield.

"There's one!" I yell. Izzy turns the wheel so fast I thought the car might flip.

The car in front of us had to slam on its brakes.
"Yeah buddy, this is my parking space!" Izzy yells while flipping the man off.

When you love someone you learn to look past their problems.

We hop out of the car and walk to the field. Izzy hops up and down while grabbing my arms. "Aren't you excited for our first game of the year!"

I laugh. "Yes Izzy, now let's find our boyfriends!"

Boyfriends. Huh, I didn't want to vomit this time when I said that.

When we get to the field, Izzy sees Tyler and runs over to him leaving me alone to look for Wyatt.

I finally see him and yell, "Wyatt!" He sees me and jogs over.

He looks me up and down with a small frown. Before I could ask him what was wrong he grabs my hand. "Here, I have something to show you."

"Okay?" I say and raise my eyebrows.

I follow Wyatt into the locker room and I watch him pull something from his bag.

"As the quarterback's girlfriend, you can't just wear just anyone's jersey, so I brought you one of my old ones." He holds it up for me to see it.

'Kent' is written on the back and under it is the number 17.

I smile so big that it hurts my cheeks. I take it from him.

"It's from my sophomore year so it's a little smaller and clean."

I finally manage to find my voice, "I love it." He smiles and I notice his ears turn red.

I start to take Derek's jersey off and Wyatt's whole face turns beet red.

He turns around quickly causing me to laugh. "Kent, you know I have something on under this right?"

I see his back shake slightly from holding in laughter.

I slip it over my head and realize how big it is. Derek's jersey was a little big, but Wyatt's completely covered my shorts. At least it smells good.

"Okay, you can turn around now." When he sees me he smiles so big that I giggle a little.

"Well, it kind of fits." He says.

"How big were you at Fifteen ?" I exclaim.

"I don't know average." I laugh as he pulls me in for a tight hug.

"You're the only girl wearing my jersey so don't let anyone push you around."

"I don't normally," I mumble into his chest.

I follow him out of the locker room. "Just Wyatt, I'll keep this nice and safe while you play your game."

He walks backward. "No, no that jersey is yours to keep."

I feel my cheeks heat. "Really?" I squeak.

"Yes, but please don't cut it or anything."

I roll my eyes. "Please Kent, I'm not Stacy, I would never."

He stops walking. "I know."

Some reason he said that very seriously.

I don't know what made me do what I'm about to do, but I stand up on my toes and kiss Wyatt on the cheek.

"Good luck Just Wyatt. I'm rooting for you!"

He looks down at me and his eyes look so different than they normally do.

They're darker and I don't know what to think about that.

Now y'all have a little backstory on Izzy.
