Chapter 1: Getting ready
Katie
I think the worst way to wake up is to the awful sound of an alarm clock buzzing. Just hearing the noise makes me want to rip my eyes out.
To make matters worse it's 5:00 in the morning. But that's how my morning goes on Mondays and Thursdays. Any other day I get to sleep till 7:00
My dog gives me a look like, 'Are you getting up, it's still dark outside'.
"Sorry, logan I have to get up".
I get up and head toward the bathroom to brush my teeth.
My hair looks so atrocious that a rat wouldn't even live in it. After one last look, I decide I don't have time to fix it. Doing what I always do, I pull it up in a hair clip.
I'll be putting on a helmet soon anyway.
"Awe logan do you want in Derek's room?" Derek is my older brother who does everything in his power to get on my nerves.
I let Logan in his room to aggravate him.
"Please jump on his bed and lick him in the face to wake him up." His ears flop while I rub his head.
The next step is to get dressed. Since it's a little chilly outside I choose a long sleeve shirt and black riding tights.
I shove bootcut jeans into my school bag to wear at school. Wearing riding tights to school you're just asking people to make fun of you.
I hate standing out I prefer to blend in and stay in the shadows.
The stairs creek under my weight as I run down them. When I walk into the kitchen I notice the pantry is left open. My guess would be my beautiful older brother left it open.
Girls used to tell me they wish they had a brother like Derek.
They would be regretting that statement after three days of living with him.
I grab a meal bar for breakfast and my keys off the key hook by the door.
As I open the front door I'm met with a chilly breeze.
I tuck my arms against my body to shield myself from the cold as I jog to my rusty beat-up 1994 Dodge Dakota two-door truck. (That I worked all summer to buy.)
Once I get to my client's barn, I get their horse Titan out of his stall and saddle him.
Titan moves slightly when I mount up, excited to get going.
I steer him down the driveway and onto the road.
Yes, I know it's dangerous to ride on the road in the dark. The sun is already starting to come up and I have on a reflective vest.
The road I have to ride on is a backroad so not many people are on the road at this time.
I'm not too concerned about riding on the road.
Well, that was till I heard a car come speeding around the curve I was on.
Wyatt
'Wyatt! Wyatt!" Then I hear the door to my bedroom open, "Wyatt!"
I sit up and look at my mom.
Geez, I look out my window it's still dark outside. "What's wrong Mom?" I ask giving my mom a dead look.
"Wyatt sweetie, my car won't start. Will you look at it?"
I get up, "Okay."
My feet shuffle downstairs and out the door to her car.
Dang, it's cold outside, especially if you're only wearing shorts. "Let me try and start your car"
"I tried and it made this funny sound. It sounded like a little girl screaming in Walmart."
I shake my head and chuckle because when I tried to turn the car on it sounded exactly like what she said. "Let me check under the hood."
Man, I should have grabbed a coat.
I look under the hood and mess around with it a bit. "Mom, I don't know what's wrong with your car, I'll have to look at it more after school."
"Alright, I can get a ride to work," Mom says quickly.
I sigh. "No, Mom, I'll drive you just give me five minutes"
My teeth are chattering by the time I run inside. I brush my teeth and run a comb through my hair.
Then I run to my bedroom put on the first shirt I find and shove a pair of jeans in my backpack.
I nearly run into Mom coming down the stairs. "Wyatt, I know you have football practice, and I don't want you to be late."
I place my hands on her shoulders. "Mom, I don't mind at all. Now let's get you to work." This time I don't forget a coat and we get in my car.
"You know Mom, I could sell the Jeep and we could buy you a better car."
I can tell she's staring at me without looking over at her. "Wyatt no! We've talked about this; this car is one of the last things you have left from your father."
My dad died a little over two years ago. For my 15th birthday, he and my mom bought me a wrecked Jeep.
I had been saving up for a while to buy a car, so I used that money to fix it up. My dad was a mechanic and he helped me get it running.
"Anyway, what would you drive, Wy?" My mom asks.
"Your car," I reply simply.
"No! My car is just fine I just need to get it worked on that's all. Besides you love this Jeep, it would kill you to sell it." Mom exclaims.
She is right about that, I do love my Jeep.
"Okay, we're here, have a good day at work."
"What time do I need to pick you up?"
My Mom pats my arm as she says. "Oh no, sweetie I'll have a friend drive me home."
I look at her, I know she doesn't want to be a burden, but I don't mind. "Are you sure?"
"Yes, yes enjoy your day!" She jumps out of the car and runs into the hospital.
My stomach's growl reminds me that I haven't eaten breakfast yet. The last time I went to practice on an empty stomach it did not end up very well.
It takes me about seven minutes to run through Mcdonald's drive-thru and order an egg biscuit.
I look at the clock on my phone. "Crap!"
Theres only twenty minutes till football practice.
I turn onto a backroad where there won't be any stoplights or old people leading a funeral possession.
I love old people, but they drive so slowly. (Especially in the morning.)
Unfortunately, the road I'm driving on is windy. Eating and driving at the same time is quite a challenge.
As I was coming up to a curve, I notice my headlights reflect off something.
When I drive around the turn I see this big black blob in the road. I slam on my brakes and try my best to swerve around whatever is in the road.
When my car slows to a shop I hear an awful screaming. On the other side of the road is a girl on a horse that's going crazy.
I step out of my car as calmly as I can so the horse doesn't spook any more than it already has.
I've seen enough Western movies to know that when a horse rears up like that the rider is most likely going to be thrown off.
"Hey, you want some help?"
"Maybe I can try and hold the horse long enough so you can hop off. " I ask as I walk over to her.
"I suggest you move unless you want one of these hooves to hit you in the head!" She yells.
Finally, she gets the horse to calm down a little bit, to me the animal still looks crazy. Its whole body is tense, it's stepping side to side and it's throwing its head around like there's a bug crawling in its ears, and to top it off you can see the whole white of both its eyes.
Personally, I would never go near an animal looking like that, but she's just sitting there with one hand on her hip calm as can be. Now that's what you call gutless.
She looks me right into my eyes and gives me a look that makes me almost jump back into the car and dive far away (but I don't).
Oh, boy I'm in for it.
