Chapter 37
(A/N No way! An update? This can't be! Well you're right. This is just another troll chapter, get outta here.)
Dipper watched with shaky eyes as the corpse of his new friend was tossed into the solemn ripples of water that lightly lapped against the ships hull. Crew mates brandished sorrowful expressions, holding their hats against their chests. Wendy had quite the reputation aboard Bill's ship, beautiful, yet fierce. When Dipper stepped up to pay his respects to the body, he could see the poor quality of the coffin. The boards were splintering, and the color was more black than brown. Barely sealed properly, holes clearly visible. The casket would sink the moment it hit the water. The brunette concealed his anger at the carelessness of the crew, but couldn't help but clench his fists at the sight. Bill's mates wore bored expressions, yawning and fiddling with the casket before it was thrown in. They lacked sympathy. Dipper expected this. They were monsters, after all.
The boy watched as the hunk of wood was barely kept afloat, keeping up with the waves by an inch.
"...Goodbye." the boy mumbled light enough so no one would hear.
They were nearing port to restock and reload. A few weeks had passed since Wendy's unfortunate calamity, and Dipper had learned to live with the guilt. He learned what a pirate really was. They were ruthless, and certainly weren't dignified heroes of the sea like Bill made them out to be. If an oppurtunity was there to backstab, then so be it. All Dipper saw were shameless cowards, mindlessly following the orders of the captain till an oppurtunity to strike arise.
Though, in order for the crew to stay somewhat orderly and loyal, the captain had to give them a big break once in a while.
The ship had run dangerously low on supplies and the humans were starting to get restless. With great disappointment, Bill reluctantly agreed to a short weeks worth pit stop at a rickety port due west of their current route.
The very blonde was caught at the helm, torso facing the ocean and slowly swirling a flask of alcohol. The sun was slowly making its descent downwards, seeming to be consumed by the large amass of water that thrashed with the tide. Bill wasn't much to appreciate the vibrant hues of colours that painted the sky as the sun burrowed its way deeper and deeper into the clouds. He found more amusement feeling the warm, day winds turn into winds that sent chills up and down his spine.
"Cap'n." Eight Ball murmured, poking the moping blonde that stood sluggishly at the ships rail.
"...What?" the captain said absent mindedly, vibrant eyes glowing.
Eight grunted at his captains lack of attention, but continued anyways. "The lads been in his room for three days. We all haven't seen 'im come out since Red perished."
"Is that so..." Bill drawled, wind bristling through his blonde locks.
He then seemed to snap out of his trance, becoming aware of the bottle of rum he was circling between his digits, "Wait, Pine Tree?" the captain groaned, not liking yet another set of issues to worry about.
"Yes, he hasn't come to the galley at all. He's completely immersed himself in those charts you've given to him." the green haired man explained, brows furrowing with slight frustration.
"Chef's not pleased with all the wasted food, either." Eight added quickly, rubbing his knuckles from old habit.
Bill seemed to ponder this, then broke into his signature high-pitched cackle. He slapped Eight on the back casually, "Oh, how painfully typical." the male laughed, earning a confused grunt from Eight.
"Oh don't worry. Dismissed, Eight. I'll take care of this." he confirmed, grinning at the person in front of him, before stepping in tune with the pace of the waves. Boots spectacularly tapping in sync with the very heartbeat of the ocean. Eight would never get tired of the captains utter divinity. They all gave up their power-hungry forms just to see what legacies Bill would conquer as a human. And they would not be disappointed.
"Pine Tree." the captain spoke, his voice more serious than normal.
The brunette raised a brow, looking at the man that addressed him with that silly nickname. Maps and charts scattered his desk, books splayed open, and quill feathers scattering the floor. The boy had found a knack for navigation in the past weeks, reading through the books on his shelf with great interest.
"What is it?" the brunette grumbled, looking annoyed from being interrupted from his work.
The blonde gave him a cold glare, causing the boy to momentarily regret his actions. He gave him an expecting look, tapping his foot impatiently.
The teen rolled his eyes, then murmured in a low tone, "What is it, captain?" he said, basically seething at the word.
Bill grinned, then stepped closer, scouring the many markings and corrections his Pine Tree had done. He was rather impressed at what a quick learner the kid was. He had successfully found the most efficient routes to stalk merchant ships, or avoid the royal navy.
However, Bill never really avoided the Navy. He earned the reputation of a crown crusher, and pirate hunter. Simply put, he attacked anyone that came within his lookouts field of vision.
"We're stopping for supplies in about a days time." Bill began, watching the boy's mouth twitch slightly.
"And?" Dipper asked, a bit too enthusiastically, mouth almost quirked into something other than frustration.
"You've been good since... Red's fall. I'd like to let you explore the town." the blonde suggested, rolling his wrist.
Dipper's lips were now turned upright, the grin unable to contain itself. "Really? I can explore an actual human town?!" he chimed, the quill in his hand snapping with a small crack.
"Not again..." Dipper sighed, examining his ink covered hand, then angrily tossing it to the side, where many others of the same state were.
Bill chuckled, snapping his fingers, making the ink basically float away. Dipper was still astonished whenever Bill used any type of magic.
"Well... Sound good?" he smirked, placing a hand on his hip.
Dipper nodded immediately, pulling himself up, "Yeah! I've never been to a human town before..." the teen inquired, "or... I don't remember..." he said a bit sadly.
"We'll make you some new memories, then." Bill said nonchalantly, "So, what do I get in return for being so kind?" he asked, an evil look crossing his face.
The boys eyes narrowed, tilting his head, "Of course you'd want something." he sighed, "Well? What do you want?" the teen questioned, giving him a peculiar look.
Bill tapped his chin, smiling thoughtfully, "Hmm... How about a hug, Pine Tree?" he laughed, watching the boy's face redden like a tomato.
"What?! ...You hug me all the time!" the teen reasoned, shaking his head.
The captain pouted, "You've never hugged me back, though." he mused, spreading his arms out, "C'mere, Pine Tree." he teased.
Dipper was hesitant glancing at Bill's open arms, but decided a brief hug would be worth a visit to a human port.
The boy nervously gripped his other arm, moving awkwardly into the man's, his torso hitting the man's chest, "T-there." Dipper grumbled, face still red.
The captain wagged a finger, "The whole thing, kid. This ain't gonna cut it." he snickered, watching the boys face scrunch in disapproval.
Dipper cringed, but obliged. He wrapped his arms around Bill's waist, resting the side of his head on his chest, "Okay, hug complete." the teen said, beginning to pull away, but Bill then wrapped his arms around the boy.
"Hey. I didn't say we were finished." he teased, taking in the boy's unique odor. Even though he was human now, he still smelled vividly like the sea.
The teen yelped as he attempted to release himself from the vice-like grip, Bill's nose buried in the curls of his own hair.
After what seemed like forever, the demon released the boy, suddenly feeling cold without the others warmth.
"Pine Tree. I don't want to find you trying to escape," Bill began, eyes narrowed, "Got it?" he said, almost threateningly, eyes tinted blue from the original gold color.
Dipper gulped, "I won't..." he replied, trying to keep his face anything, but fearful.
The demon smirked at his quizzical expression, bringing his face closer to the teen for inspection, "Scared, sapling?" he asked, watching the boy flinch at his accusation.
The boy wrinkled his nose at the new nickname, "N-no.." he replied, Bill's eyes still swirling with blue, and he couldn't help, but shiver at how the demon had invaded his personal space.
His heart was beating rapidly, and he had no idea why.
"I don't like liars." the demon smiled coolly, stepping forward as Dipper took one back. This continued until the boys back was pressed against the wall, two arms caging him in from both sides.
Dipper laughed nervously, "Hey, uh. What are you doing?" he asked, putting both hands on Bill's chest to try and push him off.
"What am I doing, indeed..." the captain drawled, staring at the boy weakly attempting to escape.
Before Dipper could protest anymore, a knock was heard at the door.
"Cap'n, you in there with the lad?" a voice called, knocking the door as he spoke.
Bill growled as the teen sighed in relief, perhaps too loud as the captain's attention was then focused on the teen.
"We'll continue this later. By the by... enjoy the human town." he laughed, then opened the door to greet their interrupter.
"Ah captain! There you ar- ow! Ow, ow..."
Bill continued to carelessly drag the pirate by the ear down the hallway, sighing loud enough for Dipper to hear.
The teen stood there for a while, staring at his hands in confusion. He felt unusually cold the moment the captain left his presence. Shrugging, the teen tried to ignore the sudden chill in his chest and decided to finally go above deck to see what the crew was up to. Actually, he was rather hungry now that he thought about it. How long had it been exactly? A few hours?
"More like a few days, pal!" Pyronica giggled, sitting beside the famished kid pigging out on the chefs leftovers.
The boy looked up from his meal, "Pal? Just call me Dipper." he said nonchalantly, getting back to the meal at hand.
Her eyes widened, but resumed her snarky grin, "But the captain calls you a cool nickname~ I want in on that too!" she slurred, obviously having way too much to drink this evening as her breath reaked of the liquor.
"Well lucky for you, Dipper is a nickname!" he replied sarcastically, watching Pyronicas excited expression turn to something even more. Not exactly what he was expecting.
Wait, Dipper was his real name, right? Bill had told him that. The teen had too much pride to correct himself, so he went with ut anyways.
"So the captain made a nickname, for a nickname?! Wow! He's always two steps ahead." the pink haired girl snapped, clicking her tongue in mellow frustration.
Dipper would admit the eccentrics of the lady in front of him were rather interesting, and talking to her would, hopefully not result in her getting drowned, burned, boiled, sautéed... just for associating with him. She was apart of Bill's trusty crew, so he could talk to any of them without severe punishment on the other end.
Probably.
As the night went on Hectorgon and a few others came to join their little night banter to play some 'spin-the-human' with a poor, drunk soul who couldn't help but giggle as they were spun round and round. Dipper hadn't joined in on this game, as much fun as it looked, pressing his lips against some clammy human positively irked him. The group had tried to convince the teen to have a few drinks, but he stubbornly refused, eventually retreating to the upper deck for a bit of solitude.
The night breeze felt good on his face, the chilled airs sending a soothing freshness throughout his body. The waters looked quite enticing, swishing rhythmically with the rock of the hull. He felt a low growl in his gut to jump into the black waters and get far, far away.
"Pines..." the captain slurred, hips swinging as he walked towards him, empty bottle flashing in the moonlight.
Interrupted from his thoughts, the boy looked up, squinting his eyes to get a better view at his caller.
"Uh, Bill?" he asked, earning a hum in response.
The captain looked absolutely sluggish, a sly smile spread across his lips. His hair was astray and his coat and hat were seemingly not present. He wore a yellow button down shirt, thin black slacks and his regular black heeled boots. He looked pretty regular for once, not as 'dapper' as Pyronica raved on about.
The captain rested his elbows on the wooden rail, letting out a huff of air.
The two were silent, both staring out at the stars that were scattered across the smoky sky.
"So, uh. Did you need anything?" the brunette asked, trying to clear the awkward air between them.
"Need? No. Want? Yes." the captain chuckled cryptically.
"Uhh..." Dipper faltered, switching his attention to the sky and the countless orbs of light that decorated the midnight air.
"Ursa Major." the blonde cut in, pointing his hand towards a cluster of stars that shone vividly amongst the rest.
The brunette tilted his head to where his finger was leading, "Ursa, what?" he asked naively.
Yellow eyes trained on him, "That's what your named after, a... constellation." he explained, eyes lidded from boredom.
"What's a constellation?" the brunette asked curiously, brown eyes wide.
"You know, stars that make a picture." the captain explained, words slightly slurred together.
"And this Ursa Major is what I'm named after?" the teen concluded, mind swirling with all kinds of questions, and thoughts, "Why?" he asked.
"Dunno, kid. Don't recall a lad naming their kid after a constellation before." Bill shrugged, then leaned in closer, "Your parents must've hated you." he smiled, complete bliss showing on his face.
Dipper was taken aback by how utterly rude Bill was looking despite the innocent expression plastered on his face. That putrid smelling liquid seemed to do a number on his captain's thought processes and feelings.
Dipper leaned a bit more over the rail, gazing down at the dark waters. To his surprise, he was yanked back by the collar, stumbling backwards.
"Hey!" the teen yelped, balancing himself.
Bill looked absolutely horrified, "Stay away from the water!" he shouted, then realized his outburst, "Sea monsters... come out at night." he added a little quieter.
The boy raised a brow, catching the brief flush of pink that dusted the captain's face before nodding slowly, "Sorry." he muttered.
Bill waved the apology away, groaning loudly, "Ngh."
Dipper decided to change the topic, pressing his fingers together, "So, what's a human town like?" he asked, eyes wide in curiousity.
Bill laughed, "Crowded, disgusting, hectic." he grinned.
Dipper's smile dropped, "What?" he asked.
The captain's expression grew even more excited, "And if you're lucky, you'll witness an EXECUTION!" he chimed.
"Y-you mean..." Dipper faltered, being cut off by more of Bill's dramatics.
"Oh boy! You'll LOVE watching their head roll, trails of blood. ENTRAILS if you're lucky!" he laughed even more, watching the teen's expression become more, and more horrified.
Dipper cut him off, "No! I absolutely do not want to see that!" he retorted.
Bill leaned in closer, "You will. Someday." he sang, then patted the boy on the cheek, Someday, Pine Tree you'll be just like me!"
The brunette chuckled, "Oh I doubt thay very much, captain." he replied, dismissing the thought.
The captain just smiled.
A very creepy smile.
