Chapter 31

He's tricked me before, and now he's tricked me again. I'm such a moron, and now I'm going to suffer the consequences. My memories, a big part of my personality were being taken away. It felt like something horrible was happening, but I couldn't remember why it was horrible.

I'd repeat Mabel over and over in my head, hoping I could cling onto one of the most valuable things in my life.

Mabel, Mabel, Mabel, Mabel, Mabel, Mabel, Mabel, Mabel, Mabel, Mabel...

Each time I repeated that word, I became more and more confused on why exactly I was saying it.

Mabel... Mabel... Mabel..? Mabel! Maybe? May...

At some point, I stopped saying that word, for whatever reason. The word didn't seem to hold any special meaning, and I forgot the word all together.

My mind drew a blank, I couldn't remember what I was worried about. Then again, maybe there was nothing for me to worry about in the first place. And, it's not like I have amnesia or whatever. I can remember lots of things, its just that something inside me was making me feel sick. Making me feel shameful, like 'how dare you'! It was hard to explain.

I noticed my vision was starting to whiten, light flooding through the slow opening of my eyes. How long had I been in the dark? I couldn't remember.

First, I saw a gloved hand intertwined with mine. My eyes followed golden sleeves, trailing up into a heavy yellow coat, brandished with black ribbon and golden clasps. The outfit looked a lot like the many books I've read on human piracy from my... Where did I learn this from, again?

I noticed the man looking down on me was looking rather impatient. I straightened my posture, and made eye contact with him. Was he a friend, or was he an enemy? He felt dangerous.

His expression then shifted to a look of concern. He knelt down and grasped both my hands, "Oh, Pine Tree. We thought we lost you!" he spoke in a worried tone.

I gave him a look of confusion, furrowing my brows, "Who are you?" I asked, looking at the man thats expression was now horrified.

Biting his lower lip, he groaned, "So, you've forgotten even who I am?"

I nodded grimly, "I'm afraid so." I said regrettably.

I looked around, the other people on the boat were smiling at me. Kind of creepily, or maybe they were just relieved to see me?

"Those damn sirens erased your memories, Pine Tree." the man said angrily, pointing to the edge of the boat.

Sirens? My memories? But, I feel perfectly fine! I stood up slowly, wobbling to the slow rock of the ship edging myself closer to the railing. The wooden planks creaked loudly as I walked over them. I peered into the ocean to see faces I'd never seen before.

One of them looked at me with a happy expression, "Dipper! You're alright!" she shouted, waving her arms frantically.

Dipper? Was that my name? But that man called me Pine Tree... I couldn't tell which name was correct, I mean both were ridiculous names in the first place!

I cleared my throat, "I, uh... Who... Who are you?" I asked cluelessly.

Her face dropped. Something inside made my insides churn, and I felt guilty.

Her eyes quivered, "What do you mean, Dipper? It's me, Mabel!" she yelled with frustration.

"Sorry, I don't know any Mabel's..." I said, rubbing the back of my neck sheepishly.

This girl sure was getting worked up for nothing! I mean, it's not like we're siblings or anything! Still... I did kind of pity her...

Bill's POV

I couldn't help, but grin at what was happening. My plots were truly ingenious. I listened to the complete confusion in Pine Tree's tone, and the muffled sounds of Shooting Star trying to hold back any sobs that dared come.

I hadn't just taken away his memories, no. I literally deleted them with no chances of him getting them back. Think of it this way! In regular amnesia, the thoughts just need to be triggered by a certain notion or previous memory, or will return in time. However, what I did was fly through his mind and burn everything I saw in sight! Yes, I admit I made some mistakes. Like, how he can't remember his own name. That was my bad. Do I feel bad about it? No, not really. But, hey! I could convince him his name was Pine Tree now! Although, I kind of like watching him get all frustrated about it...

Dipper was glancing at me, then Mabel uneasily. He was panicking, and he didn't know who to trust. Perfect. Well, time for me to steal the show!

Back to Dipper's POV

I looked at the mysterious girl that claimed to be my sister. I wracked my brain for anything that could remember her, but all I could think of was a blur. I didn't know what to think, I mean, the guy behind me is claiming to be a friend, but I don't remember him either! I don't know who I should trust anymore!

I tried to zone everything and everyone out and focus on the push and pull of the waves. I just needed a moment to think. I listened to the water rocking against the wooden frame of the pirate ship, and the slow drip-drip-drop echo from inside the boat. Just focusing on the sounds of the ocean calmed me down, it allowed me to think more clearly.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. It moved down to the center of my back that rubbed in a consistent circular motion. It felt comforting, to say the least. I looked up from my crouched position, the sudden sunlight making my eyelids squint.

"Pine Tree, I know you're struggling. And I want to help, if we have to start over then so be it..." he began, looking me right in the eyes.

I didn't reply, I just slowly nodded, unsure of what to say.

He outstretched his arm, offering me to shake it, "My name's Bill Cipher! I command this ship, and before you lost your memories— with you!" he said, smiling brightly.

Something made me shiver when I shook his hand, it reminded me of something I couldn't remember. Deja vu?

So, Bill's saying I'm a pirate too? Well, that would make more sense than being sisters with a siren.

"I'm a pirate?" I mumbled, my voice coming out much more skeptical than intended.

Bill nodded, ruffling my hair, "Yup! A fine one, at that!" he praised, his grin growing even larger, "Besides, look at you! You've got a set of feet, not a tail! Those sirens are trying to trick you." he said, speaking in a spiteful tone.

I nervously peeked over the edge of the ship. They were still there! I considered everything that he had said. He was right, I had legs, not a tail. I felt strangely attached to the ocean, though. It large mass of water didn't look intimidating, no. It was quite calming, and it was making me doubtful of Bill's words.

I bit my bottom lip, looking at the people trying to grab my attention. I wouldn't let then trick me!

"Dipper, listen to me!" an older voice shouted from below.

I looked down to see a man with a shaved beard, and a red tail. He looked a lot like the one next to him, who had a bit more belly fat and a fully grown beard. He held up a wet, worn book with a golden handprint, '3' on the cover.

"Don't you remember this, Dipper? We made this together! You and me..." he shouted, obviously trying to jog a memory, or something.

I stared at the burgundy-coloured book. I didn't recognize it. Plus, if we made it together wouldn't he have treated it with more care? It looks likes it took a beating.

"No, I've never seen that in my life before." I responded indifferently.

The man's face dropped, a huge frown replacing his smile. But, he didn't give up, no.

"Oh, come on Dipper! We're your family, you're a siren too! A half siren, at that!" he said.

Half siren? What does that even mean? Completely unbelievable, that's what.

The bearded siren looked at me, his brows furrowed. He looked worried, like he was about to say something, and he did.

"Kid, I'm your Grunkle Stan, and that's Stanford. You're apart of our family, and I know you'll remember us." he said firmly.

He had faith in me? They're my uncles? No...

The man with the journal then said, "When you hit water, you'll turn into a siren! Come on, try it!" he explained, gesturing to the water he was swimming in.

I wasn't going to leap in the ocean with three man-hunting sirens! But, something irked me to do so. I put my hands on the ledge, ready to leap, but a painfully, real image popped into my head. TRUST NO ONE.

I nervously staggered back. Trust no one... That's right! Under the sea, there's no one you can trust. I looked at Bill who was standing off, watching me with concerned eyes.

"Pine Tree... you belong with us. On this ship. Please don't trust them..." he whispered, glancing at the sirens then back to me.

I felt so conflicted, trust no one... Trust the sirens, trust the pirates... Ugh! My mind told me I was a human pirate, but my gut told me to trust the sea.

Maybe I felt so close to the sea because pirates live on the open waters everyday. Just make a decision! A voice shouted at the back of my mind. That made sense... I think I made my decision. I better keep it, before I change my mind again.

"Okay, Bill... I trust you." I finally concluded, staring at him hopefully.

He flashed a set of sharp, pearly white teeth, then sauntered over to me. He grinned, slinging his arm around my shoulder.

"Welcome to the Deep End, Pine Tree!" he laughed, patting my back.

I laughed nervously in return, "Ye-eah..." I shouted, weakly hoisting my fist into the air.

I could see the betrayed looks on the sirens faces as they tried to grab my attention, shouting, singing...

I had made up my mind, and I wasn't going to listen to them anymore, whoever they were.

Bill had been talking about his plans to me with excitement. About how we were going to travel across the globe, raid ships, become rich and have a grand old time. I wasn't going to lie, the thoughts of swordplay, and battles over the open sea sounded like lots of fun.

He led me to a room, with books scattered everywhere, the bed unmade and just a generally messy room in general.

"This was your room before you lost your memories." he chimed, gesturing to the rack of swords that were mounted nicely on the wall.

He grinned, "You were quite talented with swords, it was almost admirable." he said, reminiscing old times.

"However, you've forgotten all that. So, for now on you'll be taking lessons from the rest of the crew at dawn everyday. I've got to get you back into the swing of things, alright, Pines?" he said, looking at me for my approval.

I nodded, straightening my form, "Aye Captain!" I shouted.

He grinned at that, then gesturing to the closet, "You can also find spare clothing in there. If you need me, I'll be in the room with the big, shiny doors." he said with a wink, turning around to walk out.

"W-wait!" I stuttered, stopping him from leaving.

"What is it?" Bill asked, turning back to face me.

I looked up at him, "What's my name?" I asked curiously.

Pine Tree didn't sound too believable, I had concluded it was a nickname.

He seemed to think for a moment, but replied almost instantly.

"Dipper Pines." he said, the name rolling off his tongue sounding foreign.

"Dipper Pines..." I whispered, accepting the new name he had given me.

With that, he turned to exit and I let him.

I looked around and collapsed on the bed. The unmade sheets and covers beneath me felt comforting. I inhaled deeply, then let out a relaxed sigh.

I had my own room on a pirates ship? Man, must be one hell of a ship to be able to supply that.

I looked at the ceiling, smiling wide. Tomorrow, everything starts again. A new adventure with a fresh mind. I was excited, really excited.

(A/N Yes, finally. The story basically begins here. Chapters also a bit longer, because I had a lot to write here... Hope you enjoyed Dipper's internal struggle (it was 1500 words long) HAHAHA! Okay, see ya in a week!)
