Chapter 27
I saw the glee in Mabel's eyes as I was let down from the hot clutches of the net. Mabel smiled at me, holding her hand out, "Thanks, Dipper..." she said slowly. Standing up on my own, I gave her a very neutral stare, I was not happy being here, but I cared about Mabel, I really did.
What was concerning me was the deal Bill and I made. How exactly was I going to work for these humans, when I can't even walk on land? That wouldn't be possible, unless... Oh no.
"Mr. Pines..." I heard in a creepy tone, the hairs on my back making themselves known, "There's only one way to stay here, and... the expression on your face shows me you've already figured out what..." he grinned mischievously.
I turned around, laughing nervously. A few crew mates raise their eyebrows at my reaction, but I don't care what these humans think of me right now. Oh no, my tail. Fuck no. Nope! Never! Not possible! I stared down at the glistening tail, covered in a beautiful shade of blue. I sniffed, then took a deep breath. It wasn't too late to turn back. The bright blue seas welcomed me, the waves I couldn't leave Mabel with Bill, there's something off about that guy... it was a gut feeling. I remembered Mabel's worried expression if I were to leave her, it was heart-aching. For my sister, I will do this for my sister.
I turned around with determined eyes, "...do it.." I said, gritting my teeth after, saying those simple words felt like a part of my identity was ripped out. It was way too late to turn back now.
Bill raised an eyebrow, "Boy, you're really an idiot! Who would do that for a mere sibling?" he laughed, placing his hands on his hips. Mabel put a hand on my shoulder, "Dipper would." she whispered.
Bill sneered at Mabel, "Whatever, I'll transform you right here, Mr. Pines. Say goodbye to your precious fins. You should be happy I'm not selling you. A merman is quite rare around these parts." he finished, bringing his hand out of his pockets.
I was nervous, my heart was thumping and I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks. A handful of blue flames appeared in the man's palm, the wisps licking at the air. I'd never seen fire before, it was only told in old stories Great Uncle Ford used to tell me. However, I wasn't aware humans could use magic. This was news to me.
I remember one story that Great Uncle Ford mentioned, it was about an ocean on fire... although that was impossible, right?
Bill interrupted my thoughts, "Listen, kid. The deal was for you to work for me, me
taking your tail away is considered you helping me, yes?" he asked, giving me that annoying toothy smile.
I probably looked confused, my brows furrowing, "I guess I'm helping you potentially... Giving up my tail to work for you." I mumbled.
Without another word, he then brought the fire across the surface of my tail. I flinched as his hand made contact. I wasn't a touchy guy, and only the closest people were allowed to interact with me. Quite frankly! I've only known this guy for about an hour, and he's human!
Mabel smirked at me, "You're blushing." she said, pointing at the obvious reddening of my face.
"S-shut up!" I said back, while Bill snickered. Overcome with embarrassment, I blinked then looked towards the ground. My face felt hot.
I made eye contact with such a disgusting human.
Before I knew it, I could feel my tail coming apart, the ends slowly sprouting weird stubs that I assumed were the toes. The blue color of the scales began to erode away into a paler color. I felt like crying, such disgusting mutations had corrupted my once, magnificent tail. Then, it was over. I slowly stood up, wobbling a little bit, but I could maintain my own weight. Shaking slightly, I gave a small smile to Mabel. She returned it.
I was about to test out this walking business, but Bill put a firm hand on my shoulder, grinning wildly.
"Where do you think you're going?" he asked, and before I could answer I was pushed off the edge of the ship. I was shocked, Mabel screamed as she ran to me, trying to grab my hand, our hands made contact, but I couldn't keep a firm grip. As I hung on for however long I had, I gave Mabel a heartfelt smile. Her eyes were watering, "Dipper, please... Please don't let go... Dipper." she begged, her hands shaking. My feet were dangling, and I mouthed a 'sorry' to her. Letting go, I plunged back into the dark coloured waters.
Before I made contact with the sea, Bill waved, with a dark smile painted across his face, "Bon voyage, Mr. Pines. I'll take very good care of your sister." and then his body disappeared from view.
I felt the coldness of the water envelop me, it felt really nice to be outta the sun.
I'll rescue Mabel, there was still time! I need to look for Great Uncle Ford, and Grunkle Stan. I'm sure Mermando will help out as well! Hope isn't lost! Or at least, that's what I expected.
When I tried to glide through the waters, I sunk like a rock, I couldn't use my tail to swim! Water usually felt so light and soothing, but right now it was dense and murky. I tried to take a deep gulp of water, but the substance had invaded my lungs, what was happening?! Humans can't consume water? I was terrified, thoughts ran through my mind, I had no idea what to do!
I hit the bottom of the ocean floor, staring at all the fish that circled around me. I knew them all, and they were trying to talk to me. I couldn't understand what they were saying. Everything around me began to become faint, my vision was getting darker and darker. The song of death was ringing in my ears, I couldn't resist it. I wanted to sleep. I closed my eyes, and fell into the deep embrace of slumber.
"Bill! What have you done?!" I screamed, rapping my knuckles against the doors to his quarters. Oh Dipper... he's probably crying his eyes out! Bill opened the door, leaning against the frame, "Now, now, princess. No need to overreact." he said, flashing his charming grin. I wasn't swooned by it this time, "No, seriously! What gives? Why would you go through all the effort of turning him into human, then pushing him off the ship?!" I screamed, slamming my foot on the wooden boards.
Bill's eyes turned dark, "I got rather... jealous of your relationship with him. You see, I'd prefer him to lay dead in the pits of ocean, then have him invade my time with you." he said angrily, grabbing my chin. When I looked into his eyes, I could see pure wrath, and the most unique golden colour.
I stuttered, "...what do you mean dead, Bill?!" I shouted, trying to back away.
He grinned, "Exactly what I said. He is dead, most humans will drown with the lack of oxygen." he laughed, then turned around.
"Our deal was complete the moment he became human. If you're going to blame someone, blame yourself." he said firmly, then walked back into his quarters, closing the door.
I felt so much hatred, so much sadness. I ran to the upper deck, the moon was out and the stars were shining. I ran to the edge of the ship, I was gonna go find him. Just as I was about to jump, I saw a head pop out from the water.
"Mabel!" he whispered, it was Dipper. I could feel my heart tighten, he hadn't died! I found it silly a human couldn't breathe in water, anyways. He placed a finger to his lips, then he began to climb on board. I was surprised when his tail morphed into feet the moment his tail hit land.
"What happened?" I whispered, looking Dipper up and down.
"I'm not entirely sure... one second I was breathing my last, then the next I woke up with my tail. I think the magic Bill used completely changed something inside me, but! I can change between a tail and legs just by thinking of it!" Dipper exclaimed, a bit too loudly.
Dipper then smiled, "That means... you can probably do it too! We can get away from this hell hole, Mabel! You saw what Bill tried to do, he tried to murder me!" Dipper grumbled, clenching his fists.
I nodded, "Yeah, let's get outta here." I said, dipping my legs into the water. It was a very relieving feeling.
We were about to submerge, but a lantern light shone on us. "Ah, ah, ah. Not so fast, Ma—" Bill stuttered as his eyes locked on my brother.
Dipper glared at Bill, he stood up and shouted angrily, "Bill! You tried to kill me off like I'm fodder, huh?!" he shouted, his hairs were standing on edge.
Bill's expression then shifted to a look of interest, smiling ever so slightly. "How'd you survive, Pine Tree?" he asked, walking closer to my brother.
Dipper walked forwards too, "None of your business, lowlife." he glared, looking up at the tall man.
Bill stifled a laugh, "Kid, who're you calling a lowlife? You're shorter than your sister!" he smiled darkly, grabbing Dipper's shirt.
I failed to notice Dipper was dressed in human clothes, actually, I recognized they were from our Great Uncles closet. He also had a tiny dagger strapped to his side, which he was reaching for.
Bill stopped him, grabbing his arm roughly as he eyed the weapon. I watched the two exchange looks of hatred, but I couldn't help but feel my heart rate quicken. I was having these feelings, now?! I was... jealous?
"Now... What should I do with you, Pine Tree?" he said, resuming his mischievous smile.
Alright, sorry for the wait! I have a lot of school going on, and it's rather stressful. But since Winter Break just started, I had some time to write this. Also, sorry for those that wanted him to remain a siren, I couldn't really think of ways to make that possible. So, as it stands he's a half/half human, merman. Hope that doesn't bug you guys too much. If you have questions feel free to comment. Thanks for all the support!
