Gemma and Danny- Part 2
^^ Ze bridge in ze media ^^
Eleven o'clock. Gemma's phone buzzed, telling her it was time to go. She opened her window, climbed out onto the roof, and made her way down the side of the house. She got her bike from the shed and set off for BDI.
BDI, or the Bridge Drive-In, was an ice cream shop set up right beside... you guessed it- a bridge. It was an older bridge, originally meant for cars but turned into a pedestrian bridge when the city built a new one further down the river.
Sure, robbing the shop was cool (pun not intended), but the best part was the bridge. The concrete pillars and steel support beams were in just the right spots for climbing. And if you were feeling brave, you could even jump. It wasn't too high up, and the river was deep. The hard part would be swimming to shore.
Gemma leaned her bike up against the side of the ice cream shop and looked around for Danny and Megan. In the dark, she couldn't tell what was real and what was shadow.
A rock hit the ground near her feet. She jumped and searched frantically for where it came from. Danny waved from the top of the bridge. Gemma relaxed. She was unusually jumpy tonight. Maybe she thought that Mr. Graffitied-Fence was coming after them.
Gemma expertly climbed up the side of the bridge and sat next to Danny on the top.
"Glad you could make it," he said. Even though it was dark, Gemma knew he was giving her that troublemaker grin.
"Heh. Me too." They climbed down onto the concrete pillars and generally goofed around like kids on a jungle gym. Eventually they found themselves back up at the top of the bridge, where they sat side-by-side.
Gemma stared out at the river, lost in thought. It sure was beautiful. The black water, the treed riverbank, and beyond that, the twinkling city lights. The summer breeze blew through her hair, giving her the feeling of flying.
"You're getting all calm and serious again." Danny pretended to be annoyed. "Come on, let's get some ice cream." He started climbing down. When he got low enough, he yelled, "IIIIIICE CREAM!" and jumped to ground.
Gemma laughed and followed him. "You have the lock picking stuff?"
"You bet I do!"
They went around to the back to pick the door open. The streetlight's light didn't reach that far, though, so Danny had to do it in supreme darkness. Gemma was wondering if he would be able to do it when Danny announced, "Yes!" and swung the door open.
"Yeah! Free ice cream for us!" cheered Gemma.
They raided the sundae bar, putting on everything from M+Ms to strawberries to brownies to whip cream. Gemma ate her peach-mango sorbet with brownie chunks and whip cream in the eating area while Danny went behind the counter for seconds. He was a fast eater.
He came back with a parfait in one hand and his phone in another. Seeing Gemma, he put the phone in his pocket. "It's 12:30," he announced, sitting down beside her.
"Mmkay," Gemma said through her mouthful of sorbet.
"Which means it's Thursday."
"Mmhm." Gemma didn't really get why that was important.
"Which means it's the 25th. Which mean it's your birthday."
Gemma swallowed. "Oh my gosh, I completely forgot about that! You'd have better gotten me a good present," she teased.
Danny smirked. "Don't worry, I did. C'mere." Gemma scooched closer to him, unsure. Danny sighed. "Oh, closer than that." He grabbed the back of Gemma's head and kissed her, in the middle of the dark ice cream shop.
