X

I woke to the sound of voices. People were arguing. I open my eyes, first sight is the window on the back door. It's still dark out, so we haven't even made it through the night.

"What idiot doesn't check the fuel gage?" Marisa's voice filters through the fog in my brain.

"I was concerned with getting you out of the realm. Excuse me for not letting you die bitch!" Paris shouts.

Ash glances down, as my head is still in his lap. He smirks at me, causing me to roll my eyes.

"At least we all made it this far. Let's just start walking." My sister says, always one to avoid fighting.

"We can't, precious Prina is still sleeping." Marisa sneers.

I frown slightly, offended by what she said. Ash was still looking at me when she said it, his head snapped up. "Actually, she just woke up."

Slowly I sit up, glancing at Marisa. "You could have woke me up." I say in a pissy tone.

I reach over Ida and push open the door. Motioning for her to get out of the car, I climb over her when she just sits in her seat with a concerned expression.  I stumble as I gain my balance before grabbing my bag out of the back seat.

Ida is the first to climb out of the car followed by Ash. Paris stays in a moment longer saying something to Marisa. Ida rushes on short legs to catch up to me while Ash keeps a steady pace a few feet behind us.

Ida grabs my hand giving it a squeeze. Her way of showing she's here for me without making me look weak.

Marisa is the last to exit the car and the last in the line to follow my lead.

"Does anyone know if we could find fuel? Or at least how far the next realm is?" Ash asked with his hands in his pockets.

Paris answers him, "Let me check the map." This catches my attention and I stop, turning around watching her.

She pulls a thin piece of paper out if her bag, kneeling down she unfolds it on the Sandy dirt. I kneel next to her, "This map is dated 2017, that was over 87 years ago." I say.

Paris nodds her head, all of us gathered around her giving her confused looks.

"The war destroyed alot of highways and bridges we had at that time. The only bridges that are left are the ones our templors have made. Along with a few others." She points to a faded orange line, "That is a bridge that is still standing. These are different roads that can get us to it." She says as she points it out on the map.

"These lines," she points to the red lines, "are bridges also but we can't travel on them with a vehicle. These black x marks are roads that are impossible to go through."

"How recently was this updated?" Marisa ask, I have to resist the urge to glare at her, it is a important question.

"My family chronicled, usually one of the family members would become a peon and take trips. They would update the map when they had the chance."

"Where are we headed then? We shouldn't stay on roads traveled by them regularly." Ash says, with a valid point.

Paris smiles, "I already turned off onto a different path, so hopefully it gave us time to find a way. I say we head to this bridge it may take long without transportation but it'll be worth not being caught."

I stand up while she packs up her map, I wait and let her lead.

After hours if walking with Paris checking the map and rechecking, we determined that we made it a total of 8 miles from where we ran out of fuel. Already we have gone through two bottles of water.

We stop taking a quick break, standing in the tree line of the woods next to us. The shade was inviting us to stay longer, but we need to keep moving. I take an apple out of my bag I hand it to Ida letting her eat half first. While everyone else takes third chance of having something to eat.

Taking a deep breath I lift my hair on my neck and fan myself with my other hand. Ida hands me the rest of the apple brushing her hands off on her pants. She steps behind me lifting my hair she ties it into a pony tail then flips it into a bun retying the string she used.

I turn smiling, I hug her. "I'm sorry for slapping you." I whisper in her ear. My way of telling her I loved her, because that topic was uncomfortable to me. She understood.

I pull away biting into the apple, I quickly scarf it down before tossing the core into the woods. Everyone has finished eating and we set off again.

The sun beating down on our back, sweat soaking our shirts. The bags weighing heavily on our shoulders. Dirt kicking up in the air as we stomp along, on a mission. Determination fueling us to continue our journey.

We've decided it would be best to go out at night, and camp durning the day. Except today we were going until the sun was high in the sky, then we would take our break.

The silence became unbearable as we treked along. Every now and then we would take a turn. Trying our best to stick to shadows so we aren't seen.

Finally we find an old barn. Ash takes the lead followed by Marisa and myself.

We enter as a trio scouting the barn before allowing the others to enter. Chunks of moldy hay heaped in piles lay in the corners. Everyone give the area a look of distaste before searching for a spot to sit.

I close the door before I walk to a stall leaning on the side facing the barn door. "I'll keep first watch." I say mindlessly, I want to be alone with my thoughts. The silence earlier was uncomfortable, causing tensions to rise.

Everyone lays down while Ida walks to me. Plopping on the ground next to me she curls into a ball laying her head in my lap. I pull half a loaf of bread from my bag splitting it into chunks I had her a piece. Taking one for my self I wrap  the rest up, placing it bag in the bag. I nibble on my bread as I stroke Ida's hair.

Rain began to sprinkle across the roof as a cricket chrip. Moments later the rain began battering on the tin roof drowning out the sad song the cricket sang.

Ida fall asleep soothed by the sound, while my eyes transfixed on the door.

It was storming here, I couldn't resist sliding it into the story.

It was a slow chapter, sorry, not every chapter can have crazy intensity.
