5: Welcome to Your Freedom

"Okay, let's do this," Jack said with the bolt cutters in his hands. The chains on the door were on in an X formation. Jack put the cutting part of the gigantic scissors on one link. He then took the two side and push down on them. He thought it was going to easy with the tool, but as she tried to cut the chain it barely left a scratch. "Huh, this seems to be harder than I thought," he said to himself, but he was heard by someone else.

"What are you doing?" asked the voice on the other side. Unknown to Jack, the girl knew that he had gotten tools.

"Im going to break you out," he replied. It sounded as of he was going to say 'break you out of prision'. Would the basement be a good fit for a prison cell? Maybe.

"Why?" the voice asked.

Jack thought this was an odd question. "Why?" he repeated the question. "Why not? No human should be locked in a basement." Jack tored to cut the chain again, this time he pushed with his hands, but it still didn't cut the link.

Only silence answered him.

"Are you okay?" he asked, the bolt cutter going down to his side.

"Yeah, I'm fine," came the voice. "Its just that no one has ever tried to free me before and I'm a bit scared..."

"Why are you scared?" he asked, putting the bolt cutter back onto the chain.

"I'm not sure."

"Well it's going to be okay," Jack said trying to comfort the girl. "Once I cut these chain and take the boards down, I'll take you to the police or sheriff or whatever and justice will be served." He paused afterwards. Something didn't sit right when he said the last phrase. Maybe it had to do with his past.

Jack shock his head and brought the bolt cutters back to the chain. His little speech had given him some more motivation as well as some questioning thoughts. The bolt cutters were succeeded and he pressed down upon them as hard as he could. Slowly the handles inched towards each other as Jack attacked to move them the small distance. He teeth were clemched and bared. His brows furrowed. His eyes focused on the chain. He blinked and in the darkness he felt something touch his hand pushing down upon his hand.

With a snap and a blink the chain was broken. Jack looked around because of the hand he felt upon his own. When he saw no one was there he looked down at his hand. It looked normal. He raised his eyebrow.

"Dod you get it cut?" the girl on the other side asked.

Jack looked up from his hand and to the door. "Uh, yeah. I got the chain broken." Jack placed the bolt cutters on the ground and grabbed the chain, pulling it off the door with a nasy rattling sound. The chain hit the concert floor with a crash. "Now I'm going to take off the boards. You back up now—Im not sure what to expect."

Jack didn't hear any footsteps, but when the girl said, "On the other side of the door" he accepted it and grabbed the crowbar.

He swing at the price of hit and just started it on the surface. The girl on the other side laughed and Jack imagined her putting a hand in front of her lips to hide the cheerful noise. "Hey, don't laugh," Jack said in a defensive tone, but himself was fill in a bubbly session in his stomach making his want to join in her laughter.

"Some advice on the crowbar," the girl said. "I think you placed the curved part on the gap between the wood and the door then pull. It's not an axe."

Jack paused. He only had one question for the girl. "How did you know that I'm using a crowbar?" He didn't think that he said what tool he was using so how could the girl locked in the basement know?

She was silent for a bit before she responded, "Just a guess. What else would you get nailed to the wood of the door?"

"How do you know that it's boarded up?" Jack investigated.

The girl laughed, which was something he wasn't expecting. The crow bar was lowered in confusion. "I washer when the lit the nails in. I think most people know what hammers hitting nails sound like. Plus, I'm just guessing."

Now Jack just felt stupid. Of course she would be able to guess that people nailed board onto the door he felt stupid and sorry that he didn't trust her. Though he wondered who nailed the boards and why. He positioned the crowbar as she said and asked, "So...who put you in there?"

He pulled the crowbar up towards him and the nails were riped out with it. The door was ruined, but Jack didn't care and thought that no one would really mind anyway. He didn't plan on the using the basement/cellar anyway.

The girl was silent and didn't respond as he removed the second board. He threw the boards on the floor with the nails facing upwards. It probably wasn't the safest way to go about removing the impediments, but Jack wasn't concerned about that.

"Are you okay?" Jack asked since the girl hadn't responded he worried about her. She remained silent as he popped off the third and final piece of wood.

The crowbar fell out of Jack's hand, the metal clinked on the concrete bouncing and then flickering on the ground. Jack's hand shook as he reached for the door knob. For some reason he was suddenly nervous. He used his other hand to help stabilize and turn the knob.

As the door creaked open, Jack stepped in and found no one.
