Chapter 28
Chapter 28: Fight
~Byakuya's POV~ After June's confession and I stormed off into the halls, I only knew one thing.
I'm going to rip Leo to shreds.
"Byakuya, where are you going?" Naegi asked. He, along with the rest of the group, including June, were following me.
"To find that sick son of a bitch," I replied coolly. "Where else?"
"Byakuya, what are you gonna go and do?" Naegi asked.
"I'm going to go and make Leo sorry for ever showing his face in this school in the first place," I said as I kept walking with purpose. "Where is he? Where is the bastard?"
"Byakuya, you need to calm down," Naegi said, lowering his voice. "I get what that jerk did to June is terrible, but this shouldn't be that big of a deal to you."
My eyes widened as I realized he was right--this shouldn't matter to me. Not at all. June and I aren't friends. We're not close. Not anymore. We're enemies. We hate each other.
So, why do I seem like I care so much?
I didn't know the answer. What I did know though, is when I thought about Leo's hands on June, I wanted to break his neck.
I can't remember the last time I was so mad or hated someone so much... Even when June embarrassed me in front of all my classmates, right before we ended our friendship.
That moment seemed trivial now... especially compared to this moment.
One thing I knew for sure at this very moment was this: none of that mattered now--none of the past mattered at all right now. It might as well have never happened. Because I didn't care. At least, not now, anyway.
Now all I wanted to do was find Leo and beat him senseless. I didn't care about the punishment--detention, suspension, or even expulsion; all I cared about was making Leo feel sorry.
And I was hellbent on doing so. I didn't care what people thought of me and I didn't care about the questions that would surely follow.
"I don't care. I don't care, Naegi. I just need to find Leo or I will explode. Is that clear enough for you?" I said calmly, or as calmly as I could.
Naegi nodded. "Yeah. Crystal clear."
I nodded back. "I thought so," I said. "Now, who's coming with me?"
Leon's hand shot in the air as he fumbled with his phone. "Oh, I'm definitely in! Byakuya versus Leo? Hell yes! I'm totally recording this!"
"Um, isn't recording a fight on school grounds illegal?" Sonia asked.
Ishimaru immediately jumped in. "Yes! Yes, it most certainly is!" he shouted.
"Eh, who cares? I sure don't. This is Byakuya and Leo. I've been waiting for this fight since Leo first came to town; it was obvious Byakuya hated the guy at first glance. And I wanna be there to witness it all go down. I mean, I'd pay money to see this!" Leon said.
"Same here!" Ibuki shouted in agreement.
"Although I would normally object to such a ludicrous thing like this fight, I have to agree," Kyouko said. "Leo hurt my cousin. So, naturally, he'll have to pay."
Ishimaru's eyes widened before he just stared at Kyouko. "Fellow classmate...!" he gasped. "You're usually one of the mature ones!"
June ignored all of it as she turned to face me. "Byakuya, what are you doing?" she asked, her big green eyes studying me, obviously confused at my display of behavior.
"That's none of your concern." I said.
"It is very much my concern! You're practically organizing a full-on manhunt to track down my boyfriend!" June protested.
My eyes narrowed. "You mean your ex-boyfriend; I trust you'll be breaking up with the bastard after this whole thing, correct?" I snapped.
Why am I acting this way?
June's body went stiff. "I... Uh... I don't... Um..."
"June, Byakuya's right--you have to break up with Leo. Not to do it would be crazy. I mean, this guy has been beating you. I will NOT allow you to stay his girlfriend." Erin said, sneering at the word girlfriend. I wanted to do the same.
June just nodded without saying a word.
"Now," Erin said, stretching out her arms in front of her and cracking her knuckles. "can someone go get my hockey stick for me? I'll need it to beat Leo to a pulp. When he messed with my baby sister, he messed with ME."
June's eyes widened. "Erin! You're literally only two minutes older than I am! I'm hardly your 'baby sister'...!"
"I'm still older than you!" Erin pointed out.
"By two minutes!"
While June and Erin argued over their two-minute age gap, Hina suddenly pointed to something in the distance. "Look! There he is!"
We all immediately turned around to see none other than Leo Gonzalez himself, walking casually as if it was just another normal day.
The very sight made me want to knock him down.
Soon, Leo saw June and began to approach us. "June, there you are! Where have you been? You're late to meet me!" he said. Eventually, he was standing next to her.
"I-I'm sorry... It's my fault..." June muttered.
Leo rolled his eyes. "It's alright. Just don't let it happen again. You don't have to beat yourself up about it."
I glared at Leo as hard as I could. "Yeah, you're right, she's doesn't have to; you do it for her." I snapped.
Leo looked at me. "Uck, what are you doing hanging around my girlfriend, Byakuya? Aren't you jealous enough as it is? Honestly, you need to get a life."
I felt my temper rise with each word he spoke. I clenched and unclenched my fists.
"Whatever. It doesn't matter. You don't matter, Byakuya," Leo said with a dismissal wave of his hand. "Let's go, June, you need to walk me to homeroom."
June just stood there. "Well... Um..."
Leo glowered at June, his eyes watching her carefully. "I said, let's go, June." he said, his voice having a slight growl to it.
June still didn't move. "A-Actually, Leo... I... I..." Her voice trailed off.
Erin gave her a reassuring look.
June took a deep breath.
Leo's eyes narrowed. I could tell he was fastly losing his patience. "NOW, June."
June kept standing there for about two more seconds before I heard her mutter something so quietly it almost couldn't be heard.
"N-No."
Time seemed to stand still. Leo blinked several times, as if he had heard her wrong.
I watched as he clenched his fists. "What did you just say?" he asked, his voice even. His voice had a challenging tone to it; he was daring June to say it again.
This time, June didn't seem as nervous as the first time she said it; she seemed confident. "I said, no. I won't be going anywhere with you. Not now, not ever again," June swallowed. "We're done, Leo."
Everyone and everything was completely silent. It seemed as though the entire hallway was holding its breath.
"E-Excuse me? What do you mean we're done?" Leo demanded.
June wasn't backing down. "I mean we're done. As in finished. Over. Broken up... Other word or phrase for done...," she said, and her voice grew louder, more confident like she was now. "I told my friends, Leo. About what you do to me every day. How you hit me when I do something you don't like. And, they made me realize something--I've been a major pushover. I should have NEVER let you change me or hit me or do anything to me. In fact, the very first time you beat me, I should've dumped your ass right then and there. But I didn't. You know why? Because I thought I was lucky that a guy like you could ever like a girl like me. Well, I was so wrong. I'm nice, kind, and frankly, I'm hot, even without all your dumb makeup and clothes!"
If I wasn't so pissed off right now, I would've smiled at that comment; watching June go off at Leo like that is probably one of the most rewarding moments of my entire life, and that's saying something.
"I deserve a guy that actually cares about me and doesn't hit me. I am so stupid; I should've realized sooner that I deserved better," June added, looking at Leo like someone might look at something that was stuck to the bottom of their shoe.
Everyone was watching June now. A small crowd had gathered. Leon was watching eagerly, already filming the entire thing. And a fight hadn't even broken out yet.
For the next few seconds, it was silent. Leo was standing there in disbelief.
When he finally got it through his head that he had heard June right, his eyes immediately filled with anger and rage. I've probably never seen him this mad ever. He glared at June and at June only. "I know you didn't just say all that to me. Because if you did, I'll have to teach you another lesson. Now, June, do you really want that?"
June was silent, but she was glaring at Leo harshly.
Leo didn't wait any longer for her to answer. He suddenly took a menacing step towards June. "You're coming with me RIGHT NOW." he growled.
I stepped in front of June. "Over my dead body." I growled right back.
"Oooh... this is getting good...!" Leon snickered as he kept recording. "Keep going!"
"I suggest you get the hell out of my way, Byakuya, or it's going to be a very bad day for you." Leo said, keeping his eyes trained on June; he looked at her like a cat would look at a mouse.
"Well I suggest you get the hell out of my way, Leo, or it's going to be a very bad day for you." I shot back.
A couple of ooohs rang throughout the crowd.
That seemed to make Leo angrier. "Do you want to go, Byakuya? Because, if so, I'm more than willing to comply. I am the Ultimate Boxer after all; I can--no, I will--snap you like a twig."
More ooohs.
I narrowed my eyes at Leo. "Yeah, well, I'd like to see you try."
Leo dropped his bag to the ground next to him. "Very well--you asked for it." he said, nothing but hate and fury in his eyes.
I'm willing to bet my eyes looked the same. "Doesn't bother me one bit. You know why?" I said before I dropped my bag also. "Because I've been waiting to do this since the sixth grade."
~June's POV~ Byakuya was the first one to throw a punch. Surprisingly, he didn't miss; he hit Leo square in the jaw. Leo shook it off before he socked Byakuya in the stomach. Byakuya let out a groan of pain before he too shook it off and swung at Leo again--this time Leo ducked.
This went on for minutes when it really seemed like hours; Byakuya and Leo punching, hitting, kicking each other, waiting for the other to go down and stay that way. But, neither of them did.
Makoto's eyes were widened, staring in disbelief like he couldn't believe Byakuya was doing this.
I couldn't believe it either.
Leon was recording the whole thing on his phone and watching eagerly. He cheered on Byakuya as he made sure to catch every single punch.
I couldn't believe Byakuya was doing this... I mean, why would he? He hates me... right?
Right! Of course he does! He's just beating up Leo because... he hates him more than he hates me...! That's got to be it!
Because the alternative is impossible to even think about or consider.
The crowd around us was much larger now, egging Leo and Byakuya on, shouting eagerly, "Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight...!"
This continued until a very familiar and frightening voice rang over the crowd.
"SILENCE!"
Byakuya and Leo immediately stopped mid-punch; Byakuya was holding Leo's shirt collar, his fist raised, and Leo had his hand gripping Byakuya's arm so hard the skin was turning white.
The crowd stopped cheering and Leon had immediately stopped filming the second he saw him.
Erin and I's uncle, Kyouko's father, the headmaster of Hope's Peak.
He glared at crowd, but not as hard as he glared at Byakuya and Leo.
"Everyone, get to class NOW." he demanded. Everyone immediately obeyed and shot off to their homeroom classes.
Byakuya and Leo slowly let go of each other as the headmaster then started towards them.
My friends, Erin, Kyouko, and I stood there, all of us silent and watching.
Byakuya had a bleeding lip and a bruised cheek while Leo had a black eye and a bruised jaw. Both of them stood frozen now, just fearfully watching our headmaster.
When my uncle was mad, he was a force to be reckoned with.
And, right now, my uncle was fuming. If he were a cartoon character, he would have steam coming out of his ears.
"Byakuya Togami... Leo Gonzalez...," he said, his voice shaking with anger. "My office. NOW."
Byakuya and Leo obeyed without another word from anyone; they followed my uncle down one of the hallways and to his office.
A fight.
Byakuya just fought Leo, and after he found out Leo had been beating me, too...
Does that mean he beat the crap out of Leo for ME...? But that's not possible...! Byakuya HATES ME...
I watched one more time as Byakuya was being taken away. I immediately noticed the look in his eyes--a look that said he regrets nothing and he would do it again.
Right?
