My father lived in Botswana for six years as a child.

Dad: When I was a kid - I have the best "when I was a kid stories" - we didn't have running water. Or electricity.

Me: [jokingly] Did ya have a communal well?

Dad: Yes!! When I wanted to take a bath, my parents would go get water from the communal well...and when we were bored, we read, like, the three books we owned because there aren't any bookshops in Botswana -

Mom: You sure about that?

Dad: And we used kerosine lamps! At night, my parents would read me Lord of the Rings by kerosine lamplight!
