THIRTY-NINE

You

It didn't take long for our "spot" to become our meeting/hang out place. I had to admit, I was hesitant about sharing it, especially if they weren't trustworthy.

Connor seems like I could trust him, though.
Well, we're friends. We're supposed to trust each other.

As my foot hit the gravelly and partly grass-covered surface of the side of the school, I heard mumbling, followed by shaking breaths.

"Connor..?" I immediately snapped my head towards the guy. He sat stiffly against the brick wall a couple feet away from the door. His gaze was fixed on nothing in particular.

His eyes narrowed towards me as I walked over. "Hey."

"Did something happen?" I asked, kneeling down next to him. "You can tell me if you want, y'know."

Connor gave me a look, like he's never heard that sentence before in his life. "God, I don't know if you'd understand."

I bit my lip. "Maybe I won't, maybe I will."

He slowly closed his almost bloodshot eyes, and opened them back up again. Reluctantly, he opened his mouth to speak.

•••

All of us stayed where we were, heads down and impatiently waiting for an idea for something to do. Our prom already went downhill, not that we were surprised. Anything would've been entertaining at this point.

But then again, it was nice to have company and not be alone. We were all on the same shitty prom boat.
Connor had already taken off the cloth wrapped around his hand even though I insisted he keep it on just in case.

The summer wind blew once again, making the leaves on the trees above us dance. I looked at Evan, who was lost in thought and seemed to admire them but tried to hide it.
Later on, Michael, Jeremy, and a still pissed off Gianna decided to leave, and we were left with Zoe and Evan.

"Should we just head back to the house?" Zoe suggested, standing up from her seat and ruffling her dress.

"What do you think Mom's gonna say? She'll keep nagging us about what happened and stuff."

His sister turned to Evan. "Babe, what do you wanna do?"

The boy with sandy hair snapped back from his daydream and nervously tried to respond. "I- uh, I mean... It- it doesn't r-really matter."

"Are you sure?"

He nodded and smiled. "Yea. We can, if you want to. I'm okay with anything. We can even use my car if uh... Y/N and Connor wanna um do something else if they don't wanna come with us."

Connor turned to him, surprised. "Really? You'd do that?"

"Thanks Evan," I thanked him as I gave the guy a grin.

The couple glanced at each other before looking back at us. "So what are you guys gonna do?" Zoe asked. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Connor give Evan a look that screamed 'If you do anything to my sister I'll be sure as hell to rip your fucking face off'

Like one of those looks.

"We'll just figure something out." He said as I turned to him.

"Like always." I added.

The two left and disappeared into the parking lot, quietly giggling as if they were sneaking out. I watched as the car they got into drove off. Connor's eyes intently followed the vehicle as his hands twitched, itching to be clenched.

He's so protective, it's amazing.

"To be quite fucking honest, I never thought they'd get together." He said blankly.

I smiled and stood up from my seat. "They're good together, aren't they?"

Connor put on a half smile. "Yea. He makes her happy. However, I don't know what I'd do if he breaks her heart."

Chuckling, I patted his shoulder. "Oh Connor, we're talking about Evan Hansen here. I think he's more worried that Zoe would break his heart. She wouldn't do that, though."

He gave me a curt nod, and then continued to stare at me. "You're right. What the fuck are you doing?"

Gripping his shoulder, I grunted as I tore both my shoes off and breathed out a comfortable sigh. They weren't toe-pinching or uncomfortable in any way, I just felt a sense of being a little more free barefoot.

Connor sighed. "What?" I asked, trying not to laugh.

"You are so weird."

"I'm very aware of that." I said, smiling proudly. "Can't a girl walk barefoot?"

"Just," He looked down at the pair of shoes that hung from my fingers. "Don't complain when you get a splinter." Connor scratched the back of his neck, and I could see that a corner of his lip was raised. The two of us began to leave the courtyard, my one of my hand in his and the other lightly swinging my shoes contently.

Once we got to his car, he asked, "Well then, in the meantime wanna fuck some shit up?"

I slid into the passenger seat, and then threw my shoes in the back. "I'm intrigued! Ooh, are we gonna rob a bank? How about break into a pool?"

"I dunno," Connor replied as he started the car. Then his eyes flashed. "Wait, that's not a bad idea.."

"Wait no Connor I don't wanna to go jail tonight-"

"No! The- Y/N," he chuckled, stopping at a light. "There should be a pool somewhere near here. And there might not be any people or lifeguards..."

My mouth nearly hung open.
"Murphy, are you suggesting that we-"

"Yes L/N, yes I am." Connor smirked.

"We don't have swim suits though.." I muttered.

"Then we strip." He casually said.

I could actually feel my heart skip a beat as my cheeks heated up. Connor probably noticed. "Not all the way, you perv!"

"I know that! We're dating so it's fine!"

"Oh so you want me to strip all the way?"

"CONNOR!"

It didn't take us a short time to get there since there were slight bouts of traffic, but we parked near the pool gate eventually. I could feel my heart beat with anticipation and thrill.

We hopped out of the vehicle and stared at the pool and the gleaming surface of the water. I could already feel the scent of chlorine tickle my nose. The jets and lights within and on the edges of the pool were still on, so I assumed it was still open.

"Open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM," Connor read the sign on the white painted gate out loud. "So we're not exactly 'breaking in', but at least we won't get in trouble." He shrugged as he reached and pulled the gate open, making it screech loudly.

"I hope we don't," I muttered as we entered. We made our way farther down to where the deeper section of the pool was. Even walking was a nice feeling because instead of piping hot concrete, the ground felt almost cool, and it was beautifully illuminated from the pool lights and the moon. Connor and I set our phones and other stuff down on a circular wooden table.

Turning to Connor, I saw him already shirtless on and about to slide his shoes and socks off. The mixture of the moon and pool lights illuminated his pale skin perfectly, almost like the lights at the prom. He glanced back at me with a small smirk. "What?"

My breathing quickened as I felt my cheeks heat up. I gulped, "Nothing."

At least my own shoes are off, so that's already a head start...

After taking my outfit off, obviously leaving my undergarments on, Connor walked over to the edge of the large square pool and stared into the water.
I kicked my clothes to a nearby table and chair so they wouldn't get wet.

What if..

Grinning mischievously, I slowly walked over behind my boyfriend, who was now tying up his hair and...

"Hey-"

SPLASH

He hilariously flared his arms as he fell into the pool, getting me hit with water in the process. We were around the deep end, so he luckily didn't get hurt.

Looks like his little man bun wasn't
happening.

I laughed as Connor's head bobbed up to the surface, shooting me a glare. "You ASSHOLE!" He gasped.

Still cackling, I held my side as he swam closer to me. His warped legs and feet underwater didn't make me control myself.

"Oh my- You're okay, right?"I asked as I looked down at him.

"Y/N!"

"I'm... fuck I'm sorry Connor it's just— You looked like a bird!"

Connor growled as he started to splash water at my ankles. "And if I was I would've taken a shit on your head!"

"Hey," I bit my lip, trying to pull myself together, "At least you didn't bellyflop."

"'At least you didn't bellyflop mlehhhh.'" He imitated while sticking his tongue out.

I slapped my hand over my chest, acting hurt and offended. "Hey now, that's rude."
Before I even had the chance to say anything else I was distracted by a wet hand that wrapped around my ankle. I didn't realize how close I was to the edge until-

SPLASH!
