W11: In Between the Lines - Results
This week we are declaring a single winner.
The winner is Fusion365 for the entry "Big Brother".
The prompt was to begin the entry with the first line of a famous classic and end it with a famous line from another literary classic. It is hard to write between the lines and form connections between two seemingly unrelated things. This entry was exceptionally good at doing that.
Filled with an eclectic choice of words, exemplary writing style and a short, all-encompassing plot - the very brevity of the narrative is astounding. It seemed like it drew heavy inspiration from 1984 by George Orwell, the book being the novel the entry took the last lines from. The imagery was vibrant and diverse, building up a great setting and background. In between paragraphs and sentences the subtle hints - which hint that this place might not be so prosperous after all before actually listing it later - were a nice addition. It builds up intrigue and helps in smooth progression of the story. The pacing of the story was perfect.
The first paragraph of A Tale of Two Cities sets two opposite parallels in complete juxtaposition, in a way that is what this entire entry tried to do - to mirror the parallels in complete juxtaposition. The writing style seems to parallel the vibrant style of Charles Dickens himself, transitioning between imagery and situations and using dense language. It could easily be the first chapter of a work of literary fiction. One of our favorite lines in the entry was : "Blessed are those cursed with eyes lacquered with a thick coat of naivety and cursed are those blessed with eyes that can see past the wide smiles of big brother as he places every helpless individual in a coffin with their names painted in red."
In politics, every time the public hoists someone on a pedestal and they turn out to be not who they need, the fallout is great. A totalitarian regime who does not care for its people takes power. We liked the theme behind the entry, the political side of it as well as the narrative side. In a world where people are too afraid to think for themselves, to be themselves, to oppose something they don't believe in and are forced to have "tinted eyes".
In conclusion, it was a brilliant piece of literature. If you want an amazing work of fiction to read, take a look at this.
Congratulations!
