"Yes I do" he replied promptly, trying not to look too long at her hand which was so small against his, "Have lived here all my life as far as I can remember. You are new?"
"Yes we moved in two weeks back. We are still in the process of settling down. The city seems vibrant"
"Indeed it is! I am sure you will love it. There is always something or the other happening" he continued excitedly only a tad bit disappointed once she took back her hand, "And there are loads of places to see! Where are you from? You did not say."
Now the silence that followed, albeit a short one was not what he had expected, starting to mentally curse himself for being too prying, already forming a quick apology as the rosy cheeked girl before him kept sitting, her blue eyes unwaveringly looking on at a fountain nearby.
"We am from Manchester. Though we spent quiet a lot of time in the countryside where my grandparents owned a large farmhouse!" she spoke, resting her head on that of the toddler snuggled against her shoulder, "Around this time we would go on sudden impromptu picnics in the mornings, go plucking apples and sometimes light up bonfires at night!"
"It sounds quiet fun" he replied, relieved that he had not managed to offend her and also curious as he had never been to a farm except once, "My Aunt May would tell me about when she would milk the cows everyday as a kid. Her stories are hilarious to even listen to , experiencing it must be more fun."
"Indeed it is. Though we did not have a dairy production unit as my grandfather was allergic to cows so it was shut down and also it needs a lot of meticulous care... so you have never been to a farm?"
"Well, I have but it was afield trip for only the day for biology class in junior school, so it doesn't count as much. It wasn't like experiencing the farm life, it was more of observing and noting down things and clicking pictures for the projects to come. Not really as fun... at least for me."
He mumbled the last part, not really wanting her to hear it. Field trips were fun things of school life but for him each such occasion had to be tarnished even slightly by Flash. The bullying had affected him more as a kid than now. He let out an unconscious sigh before his spider senses alerted him of a falling leaf on Ava's head and his hand swooped in to catch it before it touched the child.
"Wow, that was quick!"
Lena's exclamation drew Peter's attention to his abrupt, unintentional display of his powers and his mind counting all the repercussions that could come with the slightest carelessness. His face flushed as his hand travelled to the back of his neck, scratching at it involuntarily, a nervous habit of his.
"Peter?" she said incredulously, sweet laughter evident in her tone, "You got so flushed at a compliment, that you are blushing."
"What...no, no, no..." he began, now all the more flustered as her soft laughter echoed in his ears, relieved she did not suspect anything. His talkative self and his secret did not go hand in hand and such reflexive actions only made things harder to keep under wraps.
"So what were you doing here?" she asked having calmed down though the smile continued to linger on her lips.
He noted her curious gaze was on his formal suit. Right, of course. In a park with a crowd donning mostly casuals he certainly stood out in a suit let alone one that he was sure cost more than his apartment rent.
"Uh...actually I will be attending a little formal gathering after this so I came dressed. I am accompanying someone here, he had some work his here" he half rushed through the words, he did not want her to think of him as a liar like most people did whenever he brought up Mr Stark despite telling the truth, so saying half truths were the best option he had figured so far.
As if on cue, his phone lit up with a notification on top of the screen.
I am done, kid. Where are you? I will come get you. - Tony Stark
He bit back a groan, looking apologetically at Lena who simply nodded signaling him to not mind her as he returned her smile, his fingers shooting back a quick text. The last thing he needed now was for his mentor to turn up there.
Am coming to you. Give me ten. You are at the gate ten?
"So, you came only with your little sister?" he asked.
"No, my parents came as well. Both of them had a day off and wanted to take a break and heard of this event of Stark Industries taking place and everyone was talking about it in the building. So they decided why not?"
He noticed the near imperceptive shrug of her shoulders and for a while he wondered why she said 'my parents' in place of 'our parents' but dismissed it soon after. Another notification buzzed on his phone screen- an affirmative yes from his mentor to the the little enquiry carried by his prior text.
"Oh, so this was just a recluse from boredom and not an option?" he asked, hoping he did not rub her off the wrong way. He wanted to keep the conversation going but he did not know how to and the first thing that came to his head then was to try and figure out if she held an interest in science or Iron Man and Stark Industries.
