Chapter 6

A hologram over the table caught Peter's attention and he looked at it. It was video footage from Tony's suit. He was looking out the window in this very room. Clearly this was from at least a day ago, possibly more.

When Peter saw a dark-suited, hooded figure hanging off the building, his eyes widened. The woman that had spoken to him before looked to Peter. "Oh, you know her. Good."

She then turned to the other Avengers. "Her name is Carmen. She appears to be around Peter's age, though as we all know looks can always be deceiving... no, wait, she is fifteen. I will show you all what she looks like."

Everyone in the room saw an image of Carmen in their mind.

"What the hell?!" Peter was freaked out by this. "How did you-...?" 'I have been reading your thoughts since the moment you arrived,' her voice rang out clearly in his mind. 'Do not worry, I do not pry when unnecessary, I am simply cautious when interacting with strangers... and I will not tell the others anything personal, such as any desires to court.'

"My what?!"

She simply chuckled, amused.

"Tell us what you know about her, kid," a certain blonde-haired, blue-eyed captain said to Peter. "She's been up there a lot in the past few months. We need to sort out a few things. Let's start with her powers; how did she get them?"

Peter, trying to hide his panic at the question, knew he would have to lie. He was one of the very few people that had been entrusted with this information, which was very personal to Carmen. "Uh... uh... spider bite. Like me...?"

Nobody seemed convinced by this and they all looked to the woman who could read minds. "Lexis?" Steve asked her doubtfully.

"... he speaks the truth."

The other Avengers accepted this - aside from a deathly pale, raven-haired man that Peter couldn't quite name despite finding them vaguely familiar, who glanced at Lexis curiously without saying a word - and Peter was left relieved but shocked. Why had she lied to the other Avengers?

"Okay, then what powers does she actually have?" Falcon asked. "Well she has all the usual Spider powers like me-" "Which are?" Hawkeye cut Peter off.

"Oh, uh, we have super senses like sight and stuff, then we have Spider sense, which lets us know when something's about to hit us and if something weird's going on. Then there's the wall crawling, so we can walk on walls and ceilings and stuff. We've got super strength and speed, too. Then there's the web shooters. They're not organic, but we all seem to have them. Carmen's are more advanced, though. I'm fine with the webs I have, she likes to test things out."

"Do you know what she does to test these things?" Black Widow asked, raising a brow. "No, she just says that 'women need their secrets'," Peter shook his head, making the corner of Black Widow's lip quirk up very slightly.

"What's she like?" Scarlet Witch asked curiously. "She's great," Peter answered instantly. "She always helping out when I need something... and she got her powers when she first moved here, so she never had to pretend that she's weak. I wish I could try out for a sports team, but I couldn't then so I shouldn't now. Carmen doesn't have to worry about that."

"Where did she live before?" Scarlet Witch asked. "Oh, England," Peter answered. Upon hearing of Carmen's British heritage, all eyes turned to 'Lexis', though when she didn't react to it after a few moments, everyone looked back at Peter.

They continued to discuss all the Avengers wanted to know on Carmen. It was mostly her abilities, her moral compass, things like that. Once or twice Peter had to lie again to protect Carmen, but he wasn't called out by any mind readers, much to his relief. Not to mention he only knew so much about her background himself.

Eventually the Avengers had what they wanted and everyone started leaving the room, though on Peter's way out a gentle hand was set on his shoulder, causing him to start and look over.

"Forgive me, I did not mean to scare you," Lexis apologised. "Oh, uh, that's fine..." Peter replied quickly. "But, Miss, er... why didn't you tell them I lied? I know you know."

"Because you lied for the right reasons," Lexis replied, a small hint of a smile on her lips. "If you had lied simply to be difficult or to deliberately give us false information, I would have said something. But I could tell you lied out of respect for this girl. You did not wish to betray her trust. I did see what you were thinking, so I do know the truth, but I promise you that I will not share this knowledge with anyone."

Peter sighed in relief. "Thank you. I didn't want to lie, but I know Carmen would hate me if I said anything." "You did a good thing, though please try not to make a habit of it," Lexis nodded, then straightened up to her full height.

"Well, I had best be off. As should you, Peter. I presume you must have a home to return to? A family, perhaps?"

Peter nodded. "Yeah, my Aunt May. My friends will be waiting for me back at school, though. I kinda left them in the middle of a homework assignment to come here."

"Then you must go," Lexis nodded, waving him off. Peter nodded and turned to leave, then remembered something and deactivated his suit, handing the metal plate to Lexis. "Can you do me a huge favour and give this back to Mr Stark? Oh, and tell him I said thanks."

Lexis chuckled and nodded. "I will make sure to do this for you," she agreed, then with an elegant swish of her flowing train, she turned and left.

Peter started walking back to school, mixed emotions running through his mind.
