Chapter 11
I feel a metallic chill behind my head. I don't dare to move, already knowing it's a gun. I guess our cover's been blown. What did it?
Peter's about to say something, but panics when another gun is pointed at his own head. A third gun is pointed at Happy by another older woman, who I once again recognise. I glance at the rest of the room. A few people glance over, looking shocked, but then quickly turn away. Nobody cares.
"Walk," the new woman commands. We all obey, knowing there's no way around this. I gently squeeze Peter's hand, seeing that he's freaking out. He glances my way as best he can. I give him a small, reassuring smile that I definitely don't mean. I'm freaking out, I just have to act calm. Acting is my best bet.
Peter seems shocked by my smile, meaning I'm definitely pulling this off. Aside from mum, Peter's the only person in the world that can read me like an open book. If he doesn't see my true emotions, I know I'm good to go.
We're lead outside, then Peter and Happy are forced to the ground. I'm told to stay up. While the girl and one of the older women keep an eye on Peter and Happy, two guns pointed at their heads, the other woman looks at me coldly.
"How did you escape?" She demands, her British accent making an appearance. "I never escaped from anywhere," I reply, though I'm starting to think I know what she's getting at. I'm hoping like hell that I'm wrong.
She narrows her eyes. "Don't play games with me. We both know where you're from." She takes out a UV light stick, shining it over her wrist to reveal a sort of elaborate brand marking.
Nope, I'm not wrong. Dammit.
"You won't harm me," I say. "You never would. You need us flawless. You'll either kill me right here and now and waste precious resources, or you'll send me back."
"You are much too valuable to us for us to let you die without enough reason, Carmen," the woman smiles in a sickly sweet fashion. "The car is on it's way. You're coming back with us."
"Leave the men alive and I'll come without a fuss," I bargain. "Fine, they're of no use to us," she agreed, seeming pleased at finding such an easy deal. "Though I wont tolerate any resistance. If there is any, they will both die."
"I wouldn't dream of it."
After a minute or two a black van pulls up nearby. I memorise the plate number as I'm made to climb into the back. I'm sat between two people, both of which have guns pointed at my head.
Pity they won't get to use them.
The car starts and the drive away from here begins. I watch in the rear-view mirror on the side of the car to see if Peter and Happy have indeed been left unharmed. While they're just getting to their feet and realising that I've been taken, they're fine. Good.
I slowly sit up, the slight action causing the two women either side of me to grip the triggers on their guns as if I'm about to attack them. I take note of the fact that if they shot right at this moment but I was gone, they'd hit each other right in the heads and they'd both die right here.
Without so much as a movement, a sound or a warming, I vanish from sight, causing the two women to shoot. The car swerves harshly as the driver is startled by the two gunshots and the two dead women in the back of their car.
Not wanting to look at dead people - especially knowing that I'm the one who technically caused their deaths - I escape the car without any way of tipping anyone off about my exit. I quickly get back to Happy and Peter, the latter of which looks about ready to run after the car, and reappear behind them.
"Miss me?" I ask casually. They both turn to me, shocked, then Peter runs over and hugs me. "Oh thank god! You scared the hell out of me!"
I chuckle and hug him back. "Don't worry about me, buddy. We need to get outta here, though. I kinda caused two people to die, so we may have someone on our tails any second now."
I hear helicopter blades drawing closer as wind picks up around us, whipping my hair into my face. As I brush it aside, I see a helicopter landing just on the road.
"Then it's a good thing I called for a little back up from Stark when our cover was blown," Happy says, getting in and gesturing for us to follow. We do so without hesitation, then we're soon in the air.
For a minute or two, it's silent, each of us weighing up the current situation in our heads. I think I must look as scared as I feel, because Peter hesitantly takes my hand. "Are you okay? You look pale."
"Yeah, I'm fine," I nod. "It's just... complicated..." "Yeah, let's start with how you knew those guys," Happy said, turning to look at me. "And don't play dumb."
"Look, I just want to forget about all this, okay? What's past is past. I know how they think and they won't target you guys again, so you don't have to worry about anything."
"So they'll come for you?"
"They might. I'll cross that bridge if and when I come to it. They've got nothing on me anymore. The important part is that you guys are out alive, that's all that matters."
"You're important too, Carmen!"
"I'm expendable. I was raised to be expendable."
"What? What do you mean?"
"I'm just a tool. I'm used when I'm needed, then I'm ignored until the next job. And if I break? Well, you just get a replacement to work just as efficiently."
