Chapter Twelve

Grimes saw the vehicle before anyone else, driving right at them from the side. She tried to yell at them, but it was too late. The car slammed into the side of them, causing their vehicle to flip and land on its roof. Grimes landed on the roof, hitting her head again. The ringing came back louder than ever as she struggled to focus her vision. It was blurring in and out as she heard shouting in the distance, or at least that's how it sounded, thanks to the ringing. She could only make out words like ambush and bailout, but nothing else.

She tried to move her limbs, but nothing was happening; her body wasn't listening to her commands. She then felt dragged out of the vehicle and lifted. She felt hoisted over someone's shoulders as she tried to bring herself back to her surroundings. She could only make out that she was being taken inside a building and up flights of stairs to what she could only guess was the roof of the building. She was gently placed down as her eyes barely focused on the person in front of her. But even then, she could tell it was Ghost. She sat with her back against a wall as Ghost gently took her chin to look at him.

"I need you to stay awake; you hear me." Ghost called to her as she tried to focus on him. Grimes tried to answer him, but she was too tired; her head was throbbing, and her ears were ringing. "Grimes!" Ghost yelled at her as RPG started flying their way. Ghost cursed before standing up and releasing some rounds at the enemy. "Riley, I need you to keep your eyes open."

"What did I say about that name." She hissed at him. The ringing began to die down ever so slightly.

"Atta girl." Ghost called, and she could tell by his voice that he was smiling under his mask. "I need you to watch Hassan," He told her as she nodded, finally managing to focus just enough of her vision to be helpful. Ghost rushed to where the other men were on the roof, firing at the enemy. Hassan looked at Grimes, who clicked the safety of her weapon.

"An assassin? Working with soldiers?" Hassan smirked at her, "Now I have seen everything."

"Bite your tongue." Grimes hissed at him as he chuckled.

"You know, you and I are not so different," Hassan smirked at her as she glared like the devil himself. "Cut from the same cloth."

"The only thing you and I will ever have in common is a sore head, but you won't feel yours," Grimes told him coldly as she lifted her rifle slightly towards him. Her jaw clenched in anger as she tried not to see red. They needed him; he knew where the other missile was. It wasn't long before evac arrived; Soap rushed over and roughly picked up Hassan while Ghost helped Grimes to her feet.

"You good?" Ghost asked her as he kept low to help support her. Her arm was wrapped around his shoulder and an arm wrapped around her waist while his free hand held his weapon.

"Let's get the fuck outta here." Grimes hissed as they quickly made their way out of the building and into the helicopter waiting on them. Once loaded, the chopper soon took off and headed away from the village. Ghost grabbed a medical kit, walked over to Grimes, sat and knelt in front of her. He placed the open kit on the chair next to them and began rummaging around.

"How you feelin'?" He asked her gently as he pulled out some saline to clean her wounded head.

"Like I've been hit by several explosions and then hit by a car." This gained a chuckle from most in the helicopter as Ghost began to squirt the clean water over her wound. Out of instinct, she reached forward and grabbed Ghost's arm as she hissed. Once the wound was cleaned, he took a look and sighed.

"It's pretty deep, looks like it will need stitches." Ghost told her as he pulled out a gauze and pressed against the wound to stop the bleeding. "You've lost a fair amount of blood."

"I'll live," Grimes muttered with a weak smile as Ghost continued to press against her head.

"You're very good at that." Ghost chuckled as they both looked at each other.

"We are arriving at the base now," Alejandro called as the helicopter began to descend. "Medical are on standby." Grimes went to argue that she wanted to go with them to speak with Hassan, but one glance at Ghost's eyes showed that it was not up for discussion. And the throbbing pain in her head agreed.

"We will deal with Hassan," Ghost told her as he took her hand and moved it to hold the bandage on her head. "You get this seen to, and I'll come to see you when we are back." Ghost told her as she nodded. The heli landed, and Ghost helped Grimes off and handed her over to the medical staff.

"Ghost," Grimes called as he walked away from them. Ghost stopped and turned to look back at her, "Be careful." He nodded at her and walked back to the others, loading into another vehicle.

"Come on, Let's get your head looked at." One of the medics said as they helped her walk to the medical bay. Grimes wasn't long; they stitched her up and told her she needed bed rest for the night. Somehow she managed to escape without a concussion. As soon as they stitched her up and she was left alone, Grimes made her escape. She was never one for sitting in a medical room when she could be useful elsewhere.

Grimes was sitting in the rec room at the table when the door opened. Ghost and Soap both walked in and looked pissed off. They had been away for a while, as it was the dead of night.

"What happened? Where is Hassan?" Grimes asked, confused.

"We had to let him go." Soap spoke, annoyed.

"You're havin' a fucking laugh!" Grimes yelled as she stood up from her seat quickly, knocking the chair she was sitting in over onto its back. But she moved too fast and became lightheaded. She staggered several steps as she reached out to try and grab something.

"Easy now," Ghost muttered as he appeared behind her to stabilise her.

"Shouldn't you still be in medical?" Soap asked with a concerned look on his face. He was now a couple of feet in front of her while Ghost wrapped his arm around her shoulder. She was leaning into him to support her weak body.

"You know how much I hate those places." She muttered as Ghost and Soap both chuckled at her.

"You need to rest," Ghost said to her, "Nothing we can do until Price and Gaz have done what they need to do."

"Which will be at least a couple of days," Soap said with a nod. "Which gives you plenty of time to get back to yourself."

"You're right," Grimes sighed as she began to move, but her legs finally gave out. Soap reached forward, but Ghost bet him to it as he scooped her up bridal style.

"You are a pain in the arse." Ghost sighed as Soap shook his head and stepped aside to let Ghost take Grimes back to a room with a bed.
