"You wicked wench! How dare you show your face at this party!"
"How dare I? I should be asking you the same question! I despise being in the same room as you!"
This scenario was common for the Relight Empire. What was once a desolated area had become a prosperous city of commerce and wealth. Several nobles called this kingdom home and wanted the power that came with the crown. In their eyes, having someone from their family become the bride for the handsome king was ideal.
It would be easy if not for Kiana.
Kiana was a shrewd woman. She wore all-black dresses, loved red roses, and killed anyone who tried to slander her. Before marrying the king, she attended school with the upper class, learned how to use herbs, and created an assassin guild to usurp the throne. Her mannerisms were poor, she spoke with an air of haughtiness and bought her way into aristocracy.

"She's amazing! Her skills with potions and ancient writings make her ahead of the class."
Alastair placed his teacup down as his best friend Spencer relayed to him the news and latest gossip. Sure, they were teenagers, but even they enjoyed the idle gossip that spread across the schoolyard. Being the next in line for the throne, it was his duty to know who his potential queens were.
Some of the girls on campus constantly flirted with him and did treacherous things to each other to appear better. None of them did things to improve their skills or make something out of themselves. However, this Kiana was different from them all. She didn't listen to nonsense, she didn't approach him, and, quite frankly, she was the brightest student of their age.
A rumor had gone around saying the girl was associated with the Midnight Cats Assassin Guild. With such a deadly force at her side, none dared to threaten her for fear of dying.
"Spencer, look into this Kiana for me. I wish to learn more about her. Her ruthless nature, intelligence, and decorum could be useful to me in the future."

When the time came for finding the new Queen, Kiana joined the trials. The women there were vicious and petty, but Kiana was even crueler. She threw her teacup at Lady Helena for her callous words. When Lady Elizabeth tried pushing her into the pond, she tripped her causing her to fall into the water. One particular moment happened when some poor fool of an officer attempted to poison her with a scented candle. Too bad she was immune to such things as that and killed the guy.

Once again, the king heard of the woman he had been studying for years causing trouble in the Queen Trials. His mother had forced him to choose the most eligible women to compete in these trials to become his wife. Like the school girls before, all these women wanted to do was drape themselves over his body and do stupid things to impress him. They were backstabbers with one another and spread terrible rumors among each other.
When he heard that Kiana had done all those things to girls who deserved it, he was proud. He could barely keep his amusement down at the dinner the night Lady Elizabeth fell in the pond.
"What could you possibly be snickering about?" His mother's shrill voice rang out as she stared at his face. "Surely you heard of the awful deed that wicked child Kiana did. How dare she pours tea on Helena Stanton when all she was doing was teasing her! And did you hear that she pushed Lady Elizabeth into the pond?"
"Mother...do you honestly believe the words of many outweigh the testimony of one?" Alastair took a sip of his wine. "The hatred is warranted against that particular woman. She has done nothing but cause trouble against every woman here."
"Exactly! The other noble families refuse to let this go unheard. Since you are the king, I assume you will deal with this accordingly. Punish that woman!"
Alastair only chuckled as his mother shivered slightly. Why should he punish such a detestable woman? In fact, due to her actions, several women were leaving the castle. Kiana was helping him out by weeding out all the bad seeds of the kingdom so that he may pick a more suitable wife. Although, she may be the best choice in the long run. Perhaps this was her way of sending him a message. Therefore, for her brutal actions, he would send her back as a token of his appreciation.
Screams were heard the next morning as several maids saw bloody roses adorn Kiana's door. Some of the young ladies thought this to be a sign that the king didn't favor her at all and counted their lucky stars that she was getting this treatment.
However, for Kiana, she saw this as a sweet gesture from the man she grow to loathe and love.

The only person who didn't get on her last nerves was Amelia, a low class woman with a pension for sweets. Her skills in candymaking attracted the attention of the Queen mother and thus she participated in the ceremony. Her pleasant appearance and kind demeanor was a refreshing sight among the court. Some even reckoned that she not only caught the eye of the king, but the king's brother as well.
Prince Terrence was unfortunately born second and the throne was given to his brother Alastair. This, however, did not stop him from trying to interfere with his plans to gain a wife. In fact, he had his eyes on the pretty little Amelia for some time now. They would meet in secret, trading sweet notes and candies while planning on taking the throne from the wicked king. Soon there would be two candidates left; Amelia and Kiana. In her eyes, Amelia saw Kiana as too evil and vulgar to ever become a proper queen. The young lady saw the bloody rose display, witnessed the murdered remains of a black cat be thrown at her window, and someone even poisoned Kiana's cup of tea during the tea party with the Queen Mother. Amelia thought for sure that the poison would do her in and the Queen Mother was surprised when Kiana got up from passing out for five minutes. It was true that evil would not die.

"I'm scared Terrance! What if that awful woman tries to break us apart? I mean, she was even poisoned and still got up like a zombie."
It was another rendezvous for the prince and common woman. Amelia snuggled against her lover while hidden in his secret garden. It was true that the young prince had eyes for only his beloved. In fact, he knew of his brother's terrible nature. Both of them agreed, along with the Queen Mother, that those two would be the better rulers of the kingdom. They staged a assassination attempt for the night when Alastair would pick her. When he was gone, the two would finally gain the happily ever after with him dead and Kiana banished.
Prince Terrance grasped his hands into Amelia's who smiled. "Do not worry, my love. The plan will go through without a hitch. I will make sure those two get what's coming to them."
Unbeknownst to them, a spy overhead their plans and went to inform Kiana. The woman smirked when she heard the news. Of course those two fools would be so daring to stage a coup like this. They had no idea that she and the king were onto them at all.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prince Terrance and Amelia agreed that since the king and Kiana obviously hated each other, it would be smooth sailing for when the time came for the announcement that would come later in the week.
So, the night of the ball commenced and the shouting match between the king and Kiana was heard by all in attendance. The crowd murmured their complaints against the two, putting more on Kiana since she was the one making a scene. The Queen Mother even scoffed at her outfit, a drastic difference between the kingdom's styles and her own. Black was such an ugly color and who was she fooling with those gaudy feathers? Truly Amelia showed out with her modest pink dress and roses adorned in her hair. After hearing of the roses that would be bloodied and left on Kiana's door, Amelia decided to make her own statement with them to showcase her own beauty.
Alastair held out a hand to silence the crowd. "Tonight I choose the woman who would become my queen. It was a long and arduous road since from the beginning I had no attachments." He turned his head to stare into Amelia's eyes. "I now realize who is meant for me and I couldn't be prouder."
Amelia got up to receive her crown when she was suddenly pushed down by Kiana as she approached the king. He smiled at her, placing the crown on her head. With a flourish, Kiana dipped him down and placed a long kiss on his lips. The court gasped at this, surprised that those two actually did love each other!
"I don't get it! I thought you two hated each other! You literally sent threatening messages, bloodied roses, and dead animals!" Amelia screeched, pointing at the woman.
"Yeah...that's my love language. I do enjoy a man who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty for me." Kiana pulled herself and the king up. "Why else do you think I enjoyed those things and said those mean words? Evil is my favorite thing."
"Speaking of murder....you all won't make it till the end of the night. Thank you all for coming, mother, brother, and your secret lover." Alastair covered his face and Kiana's with a mask. "Goodbye."
A purple noxious gas filled the room as the court began to scream. Their skin melted, eyes bulged, and there was nothing left for them to salvage. Amelia, Terrance, and the Queen Mother took one last look at the happy couple as they gave a petty wave and left them to their demise. Kiana turned to her new husband and gave him another kiss.
"What shall we do next, my dear? Start a war, kill some traitors, or burn an entire city down?"
Alastair kissed her back, smiling. "Whatever makes you happy, my dear. Whatever makes you happy."
