------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a handsome prince.
The prince was blessed by the heavens to be the fairest prince of the land. His birth brought good fortune for his family, his kingdom, and the people around him. His looks were fair, but his heart was good. Many vowed to capture his heart and bring honor to their families. Many came with proposals, but his father, the king, declined them all.
You see, when Prince Augustus was born, the king and the queen were visited by a powerful enchantress. She instructed the couple to never let the prince be married by any woman who was not pure of heart. The couple asked how they would distinguish good from evil when it came to the woman in question.
"Do not be fooled by her looks and charms. She will not be like any princess, any noble lady, and she will sacrifice anything to be with your son. If he should marry any other girl, terrible misfortune will befall you."
Prince Augustus was kept inside of the castle and not allowed to have contact with opposite gender. Many foolish girls tried to get into the castle and meet the mysterious prince, but they were captured. So many women wanted to be with the prince due to his blessings and his air of mystery. He was only allowed the comfort of the servants who served him well and the teachers who taught him well.
In another place was a young girl by the name of Daphne. Now she was born into poverty and her parents had no money to spare for her. Due to this, she wore ragged clothes, her hair was cut quite short, and her face bore no makeup. This caused the poor girl to develop poor self-esteem and envy the girls who had more.
"I wish my parents had money so that I may go to fancy parties and eat delicious foods. Still, I will not scorn them since they make do with the jobs they have."
Not wanting to be a burden to her parents, Daphne got herself a job at the castle as a scullery maid. However, many saw her haggard appearance and dirtied face and mocked her relentlessly. They hid her clothes and cut her hair so short that she took the appearance of a man. Seeing her new boyish figure, they decided to name her Dumphrey. Poor Daphne was then sent to become the servant of the prince since they assumed she was a male.
Augustus was intrigued by this new servant and tried to befriend him. Daphne saw how kind and sweet the prince was and wanted to help him with any task. The two bonded for many years with Daphne falling in love with the kind prince. Augustus would vent out his frustrations to her while Daphne would listen. Daphne spoke about life outside the castle and commoner lifestyle. Through her eyes, she wanted to foolishly believe she could marry him. Through his eyes, he saw a pure hearted individual beyond the rugged looks.
Now, coming from a far away kingdom, was a young lady named Marilyn. She came from a prestigious family and lived in the lap of luxury. Her face and personality were delightful, but inside her heart was a spot of evil. She utterly despised those of the lower class and thought nothing nice of them whenever she did charity work. The only reason she did so was to keep face and gain the chance to meet the prince.
The king and queen heard of Marilyn and thought she was the destined one for their child. They saw her good deeds as noble and justified. A letter was sent to her folks, summoning her to the castle. Marilyn was ecstatic, wanting a first impression that will be memorable. When she arrived, deck in silver and sweet smelling perfume, everyone was impressed by her charms. The king was happy to have such a kind and sweet lady meet his son. The queen was just happy to see someone who believed in equality between the social classes.
In the garden out back was Prince Augustus who was quite nervous about meeting his future betroth. He was elated when he heard Dumphrey would be accompanying him.
Said servant was devastated when she heard of the prince's arranged marriage. She thought the prince would be against this from the beginning since he didn't believe in forced love. Her thoughts were dashed when Marilyn introduced herself to the prince. She was everything Daphne wasn't; noble, kind, and elegant. Her hair was flowing caramel, eyes like an emerald, and soft skin. Through her words and charms, she managed to get the prince's family to fall in love with her.
Daphne wanted to confess her true love at least before giving him up. In spite of that, Marilyn's handmaiden overheard the poor girl's declaration of love. The sweet girl went quite sour when she heard this and asked for the servant to be brought to her room. Daphne came inside and saw the young lady with two teacups in front of her on the table.
"So you are the one called Dumphrey right?"
"Yes milady."
"You are quite the character Dumphrey. Always around the prince and being with him every day. You must know him well."
"I do milady."
"Hmm...I see. Then let me ask you this Dumphrey; are you aware that you have sinned?"
"I do not understand what you mean."
"Only a noble and pure hearted maiden will be able to marry the prince. You are neither nor I'm afraid."
Marilyn pushed the two teacups toward the stunned maid.
"Inside one of these cups in an instant death poison while the other will torture you to death. I cannot have filth staining my prince's heart. Do yourself a favor and pick your poison."
"Lady Marilyn...why are you doing this?"
Marilyn stood up, brushing some stray crumbs from her skirt. Approaching her, the honeyed smile was replaced with a deep sneer.
"Because deep down, no matter how hard you try to hide it, you will never win the heart of the prince. You are nothing but an ugly, ugly, ratty girl."
Marilyn stepped back, waiting to bask in the glory of humiliating the disguised girl. To her shock, the girl started to laugh.
"What are you laughing about? I told you to kill yourself!"
"I can see how you managed to kill me in my past life then. I was so foolish the first time around."
Oh dear readers, I forgot to mention the funny little twist.
Inside our ghastly Daphne's body laid the soul of the real Prince Augustus.
For you see, in another life, he was killed by the lovely lady Marilyn in an act to procure his kingdom. In his death, he lamented that he never got to see his true love Daphne one last time.
Only for the wicked woman to taunt that she made her commit suicide before marrying him.
On his dying breath, he asked the enchantress to grant him and Daphne another chance at romance. The enchantress, who saw him as a godson, granted this wish with a twist; they must live in each other's bodies until their reunion. Living each other's lives would teach them how to appreciate one another and reveal their true feelings.
As soon as he reached the castle in Daphne's body, he felt, saw, and experienced everything she had to bear. Due to him cutting his hair short, people mistaken him as a male. This worked in his favor as he was able to reunite with Daphne in his body. The two swapped stories about what they had endured and apologized to one another for being foolish in their past life.
Daphne revealed that she was jealous of Marilyn, but was placed in an unfavorable light due to her rumors and actions. The maids and servants were turned against her and her handmaiden cut her hair when she let it grow out. She was willing to let him go so that he would be happy and didn't feel like she was worthy of his love. Preying on her weakness, Marilyn pushed her into drinking the poison to prevent her from getting in the way.
The two finally realized that it was no wonder they were played for fools. Both didn't think they were worthy for one another and let someone hiding behind a pretty face fool them both. They refused to be fooled again.
Marilyn watched as Daphne took the teacups and poured them on the ground. The stunned beauty then observed how the black haired girl popped the cork on a bottle of wine that was hidden in her pant pocket. Taking a long swig, she wiped her mouth and stared at the lady.
"Tell me, Lady Marilyn, do you believe in karma?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"You know, the concept of when you do something good, good comes to you. When you do something bad, something bad happens to you."
"What are you trying to say wench?"
"All I'm saying is that Lady Marilyn, you are under arrest for treason and attempted murder."
Guards came bustling through the door followed by the young prince. Marilyn screeched in horror as she had her hands tied behind her back and was dragged out of the room. Her eyes caught the prince as she put on an innocent doe expression.
"You majesty, please save this innocent girl! This servant dared to speak falsities of me and now has accused me of treason. Surely you will do something about this travesty."
The prince stared into her eyes, those eyes that once tricked her into consuming poison and ending her life. Those eyes that held venom as she teased and tortured her while chopping her hair. A innocent girl she was not and she would not make a fool out of her again.
"Take her to the dungeons and cut out her tongue. If she resists, cut her hair and face. I will deal with her personally later."
The two watched as the one who killed them was sent to the place where she truly belonged. Once the guards had left, they shared a passionate kiss while holding each other close.
"Our past lives have been avenged. Are you happy now, my prince?"
"Happier than I ever thought possible. I'm sorry you had to endure my life locked away."
"It wasn't that hard. How did you handle the abuse from the ones who served you?"
"I may have punched a few maids and sliced that wicked handmaiden's finger off."
"And here I thought you had a pure heart."
