Chapter 6: There For You P1

Oscar, Velvet and Juane were walking in the hallway when they passed Cardin. The latter pressed the button to Juane's sheath, turning it into the shield. "Ah, come on!" Juane muttered as he tried to get the shield to deactivate.

Oscar and Velvet looked at each other. Then a voice made them look over Juane's shoulder. "Why is Glynda here?" Oscar asked quietly to himself.

"Each of you will be assigned one rocket-propelled locker to store your weapons and extra armor. Additionally, your locker can be sent to a custom location based on a six-digit code," Glynda began.

Oh. That would be it, he mentally answered himself.

Suddenly, Juane slammed his fist onto the button, making it turn back into a sword. "Sorry, it got jammed," he apologized.

As soon as they were walking in, Cardin suddenly shoved Juane inside a locker, slamming the door shut. He immediately began typing in a code while Juane freaked out.

"Hey! What are you doing?" Oscar cried. "Let him out!" The boy grabbed the bully's arm, trying to push him away.

"Hey, you little brat! Get off!"

"Let him out!" Oscar demanded.

Cardin growled and swung his arm to make Oscar let go. It worked. The fifteen year old lost his grip and stumbled backwards. The lockers as his back collided with them. "Oof!"

"Don't hurt him!" Velvet cried, running to the boy's side.

"What is going on here?" Glynda's voice rang in the room, causing everyone to freeze and go silent.

"Well?" The woman huffed when she recieved no answers. "Fine. Cardin, let Juane out of the locker please. It's not a toy to play with." With that, she walked off, her high heels clicking.

Cardin grumbled, letting Juane out. The latter gave a nervous chuckle and quickly moved out of Cardin's reach. The bully walked away and Juane gave a nervous chuckle.

Pyrrha came over along with Emerald and Mercury. The red head put a hand on Juane's shoulder. "You know that you can come to us whenever you need help, right?"

"Psht! I'm fine! It was just a joke," Juane said, waving it off.

"He's been bullying you from day one," Velvet pointed out.

"Juane, what are you doing? Just break the dude's legs! He'll leave you alone then," Mercury said, earning an elbow to his gut from Emerald.

"Guys, it's fine! It's not like he's only a jerk to me. Just the other day I caught him being a jerk to Velvet-"

"Anyways, he's gone now so-" Velvet tried to leave, but Oscar grabbed her wrist.

"Why didn't you tell us he was bullying you?"

"Because I need to handle it myself," she retorted.

"You don't have to. Trust me, doing it alone is so much harder. That goes for you too, Juane," Oscar said. "Come to us when you need help."

"Yeah, we'll break his legs for you-Oof!" Mercury earned another elbow in his stomach and Emerald rolled her eyes in annoyance. "What?" Mercury asked.

"In case you get any ideas," Emerald muttered.

"Atrocious. I can't stand people like Cardin," Pyrrha grumbled.

"Sadly, he's not the only one..." Blake mumbled.

Yang was leaning on the lockers and Blake was standing next to her partner. "Are you bullied because you have bunny ears?" Yang asked.

"Yeah. A lot of people aren't as open to faunas as you all are... You all are the best. Thank you...." she gave a weak smile.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

Oscar was jotting down notes as he sat by Velvet. He kept glancing at Mercury who was sitting back, picking at his teeth. To be honest, it was kind of distracting and it was getting annoying.

"Yes!" Professor Oobleck continues excitedly. "Yes, prior to the Faunus Rights Revolution--more popularly known as the Faunus War, humankind was quite, quite adamant about centralizing Faunus population in Menagerie. Now, while this must feel like ancient history to many of you, it is imperative to remember that these are relatively recent events. Why, the repercussions of the uprising can still be seen to this day Now! Have any among you been subjugated or discriminated because of your Faunus heritage?"

Oscar looked up, taken by surprise by the question. He noticed many of the faunas raise their hands, but Velvet kept her's down. The fifteen year old looked at his partner, nodding his head. She sighed and held hers up hesitantly. He understood how hard it was to admit that you were, in fact, bullied. It's not something that he or Velvet did wrong, but it was just so hard to admit for some reason.

Oobleck frowned. "Dreadful, simply dreadful! Remember, students, it is precisely this kind of ignorance that breeds violence! I mean, I mean, I mean just look at what happened to White Fang! Now, which one of you young scholars can tell me what many theorize to be the turning point in the third year of the War?"

Weiss raised her hand.

"Yes?"

"The battle at Fort Castle!" She stated.

"Precisely! And, who can tell me the advantage the Faunus had over General Lagune's forces?"

Cardin tossed a paper ball Jaune's head, causing him to wake up. He made sure that paper had gone unnoticed by the professor.

"Hey!" Jaune sat up.

Professor Oobleck pointed at Juane. "Mr. Arc! Finally contributing to class! This is excellent! Excellent! What is the answer?"

"Uhhhh... The answer... The advantage... that the Faunus..." Juane stuttered. He noticed Pyrrha trying ti give him the answer. She curled her hands around her eyes as one of the signs. "Binoculars!"

Oscar face plamed his forehead.

"Very funny, Mr. Arc! Cardin! Perhaps you would care to share your thoughts on the subject!"

"Well, I know it's a lot easier to train an animal than a soldier," he answered casually.

Pyrrha shook her head. "You're not the most open-minded of individuals, are you, Cardin?"

Oscar made a face at Cardin's comment. Velvet was his friend and partner and he did not like people talking about her race in the way Cardin was. It was wrong.

"What? You got a problem?" Cardin sniffed, frowning at the younger boy.

"No, I have the answer! It's night vision. Many Faunus are known to have nearly-perfect sight in the dark," Oscar answered. Cardin growled.

"General Lagune was inexperienced, and made the mistake of trying to ambush the Faunus in their sleep. His massive army was outmatched, and the general was captured," Blake said as she looked over at Cardin. "Perhaps if he'd paid attention in class, he wouldn't have been remembered as such a failure."

Cardin stood up, clenching his fists.

Professor Oobleck frowned. "Mr. Winchester! Please take your seat."

Juane couldn't help but let out a chuckle as Cardin sat down in embarrassment."

"You and Mr. Arc can both see me after class for additional readings," Professor Oobleck said.

Juane slumped in his seat. "Ohhhhh..."

Oobleck merely continued. "Now! Moving on!"

Once class was over, Oscar stopped outside the doors. His team looked at him. "Hey, guys, I'm gonna wait for Juane. I think he might need a pep talk."

Mercury shrugged and him and Emerald left. Velvet gave him a bright smile before followed her teammates. Oscar looked to the side, seeing Pyrrha standing there still. "Waiting for Juane?"

She nodded.

After some time, Juane came out of the class room with Cardin behind him. That latter shoved Juane, making the blonde hit the floor. "Ow..."

Cardin laughed as he continued walking. Pyrrha helped Juane up. "You know, I'm starting to side with Mercury about breaking his legs."

Oscar was walking on the school grounds later that day when he heard someone yelp. He peeked his head past a corner, seeing Cardin tugging Velvet's ear while him and his team just laughed.

Anger burned in Oscar's chest. He could feel his cheeks turning bright red. "Hey! That's my teammate you're hurting!"

"Oh, look, pipsqueak came to his pet bunny's rescue! How cute!" Cardin shoved Oscar into Velvet. She caught him before he landed on the ground.

"She is a person, not my pet," Oscar growled.

Cardin laughed. "Why don't you make me change my mind?"

Oscar stood up, brushing himself off. "Technically, it is impossible to make anyone believe anything. No one can be forced to believe in something. Although people can pretend to believe in something they don't, does not mean that people can make someone actually believe in something. You following?"

Cardin stepped up, tapping the boy's chest roughly. "I meant, fight for her, dolt."

"Fighting is for use of good at Beacon," Oscar retorted.

"Saving a damsel in distress isn't good enough for you?" Cardin suddenly slammed Oscar into a wall.

The boy gasped, but managed to speak. "She's not a damsel in distress. You can only do what you want because she's too kind to hurt you for her. Just like Juane is too nice to hurt you for him!"

"Oh? Then she'll fight back for you? Let's test it." Cardin slammed his knee into the boy's gut.

"Oscar!" Velvet narrowed her eyes. "Stop it right now, Cardin! Pick on someone your own size!"

"So bunny does have a bark, but can she bite?"

Oscar felt a fist collide with his face, making him cry out. He felt his stomach being punched twice before it suddenly stopped. Through blurry eyes, Oscar saw Velvet grab Cardin's arm before he could punch him again. Her eyes burned with searing anger and her pale cheeks were glowing bright red. "Leave him alone!" With that, she twisted Cardin's arm until it cracked. He screamed.
