Chapter 3:Training P2

Video is not mine.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

"The last pair has been formed, sir," Glynda Goodwitch stated.  "Nora Valkyrie and Lie Ren. Poor boy.  I can't possibly imagine those two getting along. Still, he's probably better off than Miss Nikos."

"Mmmm..." was all Ozpin said in return.

"I don't care what his transcripts say. That Jaune fellow is not ready for this level of combat."  She turned off her tablet.  "I guess we'll find out soon enough. At their current pace, they should reach the temple within just a few minutes."  She turned to the headmaster.  "Speaking of which, what did you use as relics this year?"  There was silence.  "Professor Ozpin?"

Ozpin gave no answer as he looked at his own tablet.  He watched as Ruby and Weiss began to work their way towards the temple.

"Sir?  You can't focus on Oscar the entire-oh..."  Glynda Goodwitch stopped when she looked over his shoulder.

Ozpin chuckled.  "A promise is a promise, Gylnda. I will not focus in Oscar alone.  I believe I'd get another stern talking to from him if I don't give him space."

"With all do respect, Oz.  I don't know which of the two of you are actually in charge," Glynda shook her head.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

"Nine o'clock!"  Oscar warned.

Velvet turned her her left, slashing the Beowulf grim.  It fell dead.  "Thanks!"

"No problem!  Oh!  Starboard!"

Oscar shot to his right, killing the grim about to tackle him.  They stopped as they realized that they had wiped out the pack of grim.  "Well, that's done."

"We work pretty great," Velvet admitted as she put her weapons away.  "Honestly, I was worried I'd get stuck with the leftovers... no ofense..."

"Why would you get stuck with the leftovers?"  Oscar asked as they began their journey to the temple.

"Because not many humans want to hang around me," she replied.  "Plus I'm one of the only faunas in the school."

"Really?  I don't know why.  You're just like us.  I mean, with the addition of bunny ears, but that means you hear very well.  You can hear grim before they attack like you did earlier.  That's cool."

She smiled.  "Thanks.  You fight very good for someone your age.  Are you thirteen?  No, fourteen?"

"Fifteen, actually.  Thanks, I was taught by the best and my life wasn't always easy, so I have a lot of training and experience," Oscar explained.

"Cool!  Who were you trained by?"

Oscar gave a nervous chuckle.  "Well..."

"Wait!"  Velvet held up a hand to make him stop.  She pulled her weapon out and Oscar slowly followed suit.

Not any sooner did a large grim come crashing through trees along with a boy and girl.  Oscar jumped forward as he turned his crossbow into a spear and impaled the the beast.  The new girl killed another grim that almost flattened Oscar.

The four teens quickly went back to back.  "How many are there?"  Oscar asked.

"About ten left, I think," the new boy answered as he wiped his mouth.

"That's manageable," Oscar said.  "Oscar, by the way."  He shot at a grim.

"Emerald.  That's my partner, Mercury,"  the new girl with green hair answered.

"I'm Velvet," the bunny faunas announced sweetly as she took a picture of Emerald's weapons.  "I hope you don't mind."  She leapt forward, cutting another grim in half.

"Woe..."  Mercury said.

"You guys take the ones on the left.  Velvet and I will take the right.  Sounds good to you?"

"Sure, kid," Emerald jumped into the fray.

"Oscar!"

The boy turned around.  Velvet used a whip and Oscar caught the other end, letting it wrap around his wrist.  He gave it a hard yank, making two grim trip.  Turning her weapon into a spear, both Velvet and Oscar jumped onto their prey, slaying them.

"Velvet, use the whip and swing me up!" Oscar said.

The faunas nodded and whipped her weapon around Oscar's wrist again.  Using all her strength she could muster, she swung him into the air.  Oscar used his crossbow, shooting at their enemies and then spearing the the one he landed on.

Oscar panted as the four regrouped.  "Hey, we aren't bad," Mercury said.

"Yeah.  Let's hurry up and find that temple and bring back the relic.  I don't know about you, but I think we've fought our fair share of grim today," Emerald said.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

"Hmm... those four are working well together... too well... it's very odd," Glynda said.

"I wouldn't complain about a good team, I'm sure there is plenty for them to learn," Ozpin answered calmly.  "Which team is it, by the way?"

"Well, it's actually two teams that joined together really.  You have Mercury and Emerald, along with Velvet and Oscar."

Ozpin closed his eyes and gave a low chuckle.  "Well, luck tends to fall on his side strongly one way or another."

"Teams Ruby and Weiss, Yang and Blake, Ren and Nora, along with Pyrrha and Jaune have all teamed up against two different large grim.  They're work is decent for one's their age,"  Glynda admitted.

"I know.  It was Ruby calling most of the shots."

"So it's safe to assume who you're picking as leader," Glynda closed her eyes.

"Perhaps, but you may be surprised, I do not always pick the obvious choice."

"How could I forget?"  Glynda said.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

"Oh, so now you show up," Jaune said crossing his arms.

Oscar chuckled.  "Did we miss something?"

"Not at all.  Just two giant grim and blonde boy dangling from a tree the entire time," Weiss huffed as she walked passed them.

"Hey!  I could see things from a better angle!" Jaune said.

Pyrrha chuckled as she set a hand on his shoulder.  "Here, Jaune.  This is our real relic."

"Here, I grabbed ours," Mercury tossed a black piece to Emrald who caught it.

"You wanna pick our relic?"  Oscar asked.

Velvet nodded as she picked up a black queen.  "Look good to you?"

Oscar chuckled.  "Picked the most powerful piece, huh?"

"Really?  I don't know chess... I just know the peices, but not the rules," Velvet admitted.

"Oh, I'll have to show you some time," Oscar offered.

"Well, guys, this is our cue to head back to the cliff!"  Yang said.

"Yeah!"  Ruby jumped up.  "Who wants to race?"

◇◇◇◇◇◇

"Russel Thrush. Cardin Winchester. Dove Bronzewing. Sky Lark. The four of you retrieved the black bishop pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team CRDL, led by... Cardin Winchester!" Ozpin announced.

The audience cheered and clapped. Team CRDL made their way down the stage.

"Jaune Arc. Lie Ren. Pyrrha Nikos. Nora Valkyrie. The four of you retrieved the white rook pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team JNPR," Ozpin continued.

Nora laughed as she gave Ren a hug as the crowd cheered.

"Led by... Jaune Arc!"

"Huh? L-Led by...?" Jaune looked stunned by the announcement.

"Congratulations, young man," Ozpin nodded. Oscar gave him a thumbs up as Pyrrha bumped his shoulder in a friendly way.

"Blake Belladonna. Ruby Rose. Weiss Schnee. Yang Xiao Long. The four of you retrieved the white knight pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team RWBY. Led by... Ruby Rose!" Ozpin said.

Weiss looked shocked, but said nothing. Yang hugged her little sister. I'm so proud of you!"

"Emerald Sustrai. Mercury Black. Velvet Scarlatina. Oscar Pines. The four if you have retrieved black queen pieces. From now on, you will be known as team OVEM, and you will work together. You will led by... Oscar Pines."

Oscar's face grew red as Velvet offered a bright smile. Mercury gave an approving nod and Emerald smirked. At least his teammates approved. Of course, he was certain that neither of them knew he was the adopted son of Ozpin. He hoped that wasn't the reason why he picked as team leader.

"It looks like things are shaping up to be an... interesting year," Ozpin stated.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

"This our dorm?"  Mercury asked.

"Hey, we've slept in tighter places," Emerald shrugged.

"True.  Figuratively and literally," Mercury agreed.

"H-How tight?"  Velvet asked.

Emerald rolled her eyes.  "Not like that.  Girls on the left, boys on the right.  Sound good?"  She looked at Oscar.

"Uh... yeah... sure..."  the boy nodded.  He was team leader, so he guessed the four would be looking to him for answers.  A dorky teen boy that hadn't even had his grow spurt yet and hadn't left the city if Vale in years.  In other words, he was a sheltered boy who was very socially awkward.  On his defense, he did no a lot more about grim than the average citizen, thanks to being the adopted son of the Headmaster of Beacon Academy.

"You like books?"  Velvet asked as Oscar pulled out a stack of them.

He shrugged.  "I guess...  It depends on my mood, but books are very influenced on me to read."

"Your parents nerds?"  Mercury asked coolly.

"I... I wouldn't know," Oscar admitted.  "I haven't seen them since I was like five."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Velvet's ears flattened a little.

"Hey, me and Merc don't have any blood family either if makes you feel better," Emerald said.

"Don't worry about me, I have a loving family, even of they aren't my blood.  I wouldn't trade them for the world," Oscar assured them.

Velvet brightened up as she pulled out her binder full of pictures she had taken and put it on a shelf.  She then pulled put an empty scrap book.  "Is it ok if I take picture of all of us?  I'm going to be doing a scrapbook diary so I can look back on these days when I'm older."

"Sure," the other three agreed.

"Ok, three, two, one, and... snap!"  Velvet said as the camera flashed.
