Chapter 1:Day One
"What are you doing?"
He winced as he looked towards the crash. There were two girls. One yelling and the other sitting on the ground where she was surrounded by suitcases. "Sorry she apologized as she brushed her short, black hair out of her face.
"Sorry? Do you have any idea of the damage you could have caused?"
"Uh..." the girl with black hair picked up a case.
"Give me that!" The older girl with white hair demanded. "This is dust! Mined and purified by the Snchee Dust Company. What are you brain-dead? Dust! Fire! Lightning! Water! Energy!"
"I know..." the younger girl groaned and coughed as the snob shook her red dust.
"Are you even listening to me? Is any of this sinking in? What do you have to say for yourself?" It was too much. The younger girl sneezed causing a minor explosion.
"Shoot!" the boy dashed over two the two girls.
"Unbelievable! This is the exact kind of thing I was talking about!"
"I'm really sorry-"
"Are you two ok-" he was cut off by the argument again.
"You complete dult! What are you even doing here? Aren't you a little young to be attending Beacon?"
"Well... I'm uh... attending early," the boy and younger girl mumbled. The boy rubbing his arm as he looked away, believing that the girl with white hair had been insulting him and not the other girl. Not that it made a difference.
"We're here to fight monsters, so watch where you're going!"
"I said I was sorry, princess!" The younger girl finally snapped.
"Actually, that accusation is not too far." Another girl wearing a bow on top of her head walked up, holding one of the bottles of dust. "Weiss Schnee, daughter of the owner of the Schnee Dust Company."
"Finally, some recognition!" Weiss said.
"Also the same company who runs controversial labor and makes questionable business deals."
"How dare-the nerve of... ugh!" Weiss snatched the bottle out of the girl's hand before storming off.
"I'll make it up to you!" The girl with short, black hair called after her. The girl wearing a bow left as well. "Welcome to Beacon," she muttered under her breath.
"Are you... ok?" The boy asked.
"Huh? Oh! Yeah! I'm great! I'm Ruby Rose, by the way." She held out her hand.
"Oscar. Oscar Pines." He accepts the hand shake.
"You look younger than the others, are you attending early?"
"Yeah..." Oscar admitted.
"Oh, jeez! I'm not the only one, that's a relief!" Ruby said.
"...You attending early too?"
"Yeah, Ozpin let me come in early. I'm fifteen."
"So am I!" Oscar felt a wave of relief sink in. He wasn't the only one that was younger than the other students. Perhaps he would be able to avoid being bullied this time. Somehow, he doubted that.
"So... Professor Ozpin ran into you too, huh?"
"You could say that..." Oscar scratched the back of his neck.
"Ummm..."
The two looked over to the owner of the voice. It was a boy with blond hair. "What happened there?" He pointed to the small crater.
"Ooh..." Oscar winced when he saw it. "That's gonna annoy Glynda..."
"Glynda? You call her by her first name?" Ruby exclaimed in shock.
"Uh... yes? We go way back really, I have special permission," Oscar added. "I should probably be more formal around the other students..."
"Here." The older boy handed ruby a handkerchief. "You've got some of that dust on you."
"Thanks..."
"Juane. Juane Arc. Short, sweet, rolls off the tongue and the ladies love it! Or so my mom has told me..."
"Aren't you Vomit Boy?" She narrowed her eyes at him.
"Uh... yeah..." Juane flushed.
Ruby giggled and brushed it off. "I'm Ruby Rose and this is... Oswald?"
"Oscar. Oscar Pines," the younger boy corrected.
"Right! Sorry," Ruby gave a nervous chuckle.
◇◇◇◇◇◇
"Ruby! Over here! I saved you a spot!" A girl with long blond curls was waving as the trio entered the auditorium.
"Oh! Hey, I-I gotta go! I'll see you after the ceremony!" Ruby said excitedly to the boys. "That's my sister, Yang."
"Hey, wait! Ah, great. Where am I supposed to find another nice, quirky girl to talk to?!"
"I mean, I'm not a quirky girl, but I am someone to talk to," Oscar offered.
Juane chuckled. "Ok. Let's find somewhere to stand."
"Preferably not the front," Oscar chuckled nervously. They pick a spot not too far off from Ruby.
"How's your first day going, little sister?" Yang asked in her obnoxiously loud voice.
"You mean since you ditched me and I exploded?" Ruby huffed.
"Yikes! Meltdown already?" Yang chuckled.
"No, I literally exploded a hole in front of the school! And there was some fire, and I think some ice...?" Ruby set a finger on her cheek in thought.
"Are you being sarcastic?" Yang laughed.
Ruby scoffed. "I wish! I tripped over some crabby girl's luggage, and then she yelled at me, and then I sneezed, and then I exploded, and then she yelled at me again, and I felt really, really bad, and I just wanted her to stop yelling at me!"
"You!" Weiss pointed at Ruby. Oscar merely pulled his collar up, hoping he wouldn't be noticed. Luckily, the Schnee didn't seem to have an interest in him. Just poor Ruby.
"Oh, gosh, it's happening again!" Ruby whined.
"You're lucky we weren't blown off the side of the cliff!" Weiss set her hands on her hips.
"Oh, wow, Ruby, you really exploded," Yang deadpaned.
"It was an accident," Ruby defended herself. She looked at Weiss. "It was an accident! Plus you were the one throwing all the dust in my face."
Weiss handed her a booklet. "The Schnee Dust Company is not responsible for any injuries or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee Family highly encourages their customers to read and familiarize themselves with this easy to follow guide to Dust applications and practices in the field."
"Uh..." Ruby gave her a confused look.
"You really wanna start making things up to me?"
"Absolutely?" Ruby wasn't certain what the best words were around this girl. Gosh, she was frightening.
"Read this, and don't ever speak to me again," Weiss huffed.
"Look, uh, it sounds like you two just got off on the wrong foot. Why don't you start over and try to be friends, okay?" Yang tried.
"Yeah! Great idea, sis!" Ruby held out her hand. "Hello, Weiss! I'm Ruby! Wanna hang out? We can go shopping for school supplies!"
"Yeah! And we can paint our nails and try on clothes and talk about cute boys, like tall, blond, and shorty over there!" Wiess said sarcastically.
"Huh?" Juane looked over when he realized he was just brought into the conversation. Oscar merely raised a brow at her. He wasn't that short... ok, yeah. He was the shortest student at Beacon at the moment.
"Wow, really?!" Ruby exclaimed.
"No."
The argument stopped when they realized that Professor Ozpin was readying the microphone.
"I'll... keep this brief," he began. "You have traveled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, direction. You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step."
Glynda Goodwitch stepped forward. "You will gather in the ballroom tonight. Tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."
"He seemed kind of... off," Yang muttered.
"It's almost like he wasn't even there," Ruby admitted.
"He does that from time to time," Oscar said as he walked over to them.
"You act like you know him pretty well." Yang set a hand on her hip.
Ruby gasped. "You knew Ms. Goodwitch and Professor Ozpin!"
"Yeah?"
"You're not lying are you?" She squinted her eyes and pointed an accusing finger af him.
"No." Oscar raised his hands up to show he came in peace. "You could say I know Glynda because I know Oz."
"Care to introduce your new friend?" Yang asked.
"Oh! Yang! This is Oscar! I got your name right this time, right?"
Oscar nodded and gave a small chuckle. "Yes."
"Wow!" Ruby's eyes grew wide with amazement. Oscar's cheeks flushed.
Juane stepped up next to Weiss. "I'm a natural blond, you know!"
She rolled her eyes before walking off.
◇◇◇◇◇◇
Oscar laid down on the ground, pulling his covers up to his chin.
"Mind if I sleep next to you?" Juane asked.
"Oh! Uh... not at all!" Oscar sat up. He was proud of himself. He made two friends on his first day. At least, he hoped he did. At least Juane would be considered a friend in the least. He wasn't certain if Weiss counted as an enemy. After all, she seemed to prefer to ignore his existence apart from using him for a statement.
Juane set his bed up and laid on the floor. Oscar noticed his hoodie. "You wear a bunny hoodie?"
"Yeah, my favorite cereal brand," Juane explained. "Do you think that's dorky?"
Oscar laughed. "I think it's great. Nothing wrong with it. I just think it takes guts wearing it because I'm certain they're some people here who don't understand."
"Thank you," Juane beamed.
◇◇◇◇◇◇
I promise, Oscar will become the lead character, but I'm slowly getting to his character.
