The backwards theif
As soon as school was over Adrien called Marinette. But when she didn't pick up, he only got more sick to the stomach with worry. He tried calling her again, listening to the ringing drone on and on and on until it went to her voicemail.
He was standing outside of the school, and his ride still hasn't shown up yet. He looked up at her bakery, which was across the street on the right side of the school. He waited a little longer, but his ride still gabby shown up.
Finally he jogged I've to the bakery.
Opening the doors he saw only Mr. Dupan at the counter ready for customers. He looked stressed, his head in his large hands.
"Adrien?" He looked up after hearing the door ring the bell as Adrien stepped inside.
"Hey mr. Dupan." Adrien smiled weekly.
"Your here.. for Marinette aren't you?" Tom stood up from leaning on the counter.
"Y-yes. Is she alright?" Adrien stepped up to the opposite sides of the counter.
"Oh yes she's fine." Ton reassured, but seeing Adrien's posture made him cave in. "No, not really. We don't know what happened. She just... fell..."
"Fell? Off what?!" Adrien gasped.
"Her balcony." These words made Adrien's heart skip a beat in fear.
"C-can I see her?!"
"She's in le hôpital Necker. But you might want to hurry, visiting hours will be over in 45 minutes." Tom informed him.
"Thank you sir! And... why aren't you there?" Adrien asked, trying to be polite.
"I have to work the bakery." Tom explained.
"Sorry sir, I'll check on her for you!" Adrien said, making his way out the door.
"Thank you, have a nice day young man!" Tom replied as Adrien left.
Adrien called Natalie who took him to the hôpital Necker after an argument or two. He ran inside the building without hesitation as Natalie called in, to make arrangements for Adrien's visit. After about 15 minutes of waiting Adrien was let into Marinette's room.
His heart almost stopped.
There she was. She wore a completely white mask on with only breathing holes, like a ski mask. Her body was pale, her hair undone, and her weights were gone. Machines filled the room updating her status of heart beat, blood pressure, breathing and etc. Her mother, Sabine, was sitting wearily in the corner on a chair, rubbing her forehead.
The sight was horrific to Adrien's eyes.
"Adrien?" She noticed him walking inside the bland hospital room.
"H-hey." He said nervously.
"I'm glad you came." Her mother said. Adrien day next to her, looking at Marinette's unconscious body.
"You are?"
"She needs a friend right now, I'm afraid she's been crying all day thinking I don't even know what." Mrs. Cheng explained.
"Oh... she was awake?" Adrien's êtes seemed to glow slightly.
"Yes, just five minutes ago she fell back asleep. But don't worry, she'll wake up soon." Mrs. Cheng tapped her nails on the chair anxiously.
"W-what happened? I mean- I know she fell but..."
"I don't know what she was doing, the doctors are convinced it was a suicide attempt but I won't believe them! My marinette would never... she..." Sabine continued to tap her nails faster.
"She wouldn't. She probably fell over the railing. That's all... will she be ok? Like.. in time for the performance?" Adrien pondered.
"That's up for the doctors to decide." Sabine nodded to Marinette. "Hey sweet pea." Marinette sat up. Her entire face was unseen, including her eyes, blinding her. She reached up and touched it, without the drag of her weights pulling her arms down. She traced the mask as if wondering where she was, then flinched as pain creeped back to her. "Lay back down dear."
Marinette said something but it was like some one spitting on a micro phone that was on low volume.
"Hey, Marinette." Adrien said sadly. Marinette perked up at the sound of his voice, not laying back down.
"Adrfffm?" He voice was muffled.
"Yeah. I'm here." Adrien spoke softly.
"Cagffm I Serge mmu?" She tried to say. "Pleffs?"
"Honey you can't take off the mask, even to see us. You know that." Sabine spoke to her daughter.
"Buffr mof!" Marinette pulled her hands into fists.
"I said no." Sabine said. "The doctors won't let you. And we aren't breaking any rules here."
Marinette gave up on talking and reached out a hand in the directing of Adrien's voice. Adrien just sat there stupidly. Sabine nudged him and told him to go to her.
Adrien moves over to her bed, and sat next to her. He didn't see any casts on her whatsoever, except for the brace around her torso. He gently took her hand and thumbed it tenderly.
Her hand was so cold. Drained of warmth it seemed. But Adrien never let go. Marinette searched for Adrien with her other hand, placing it on his chest. Once she found him she sprung into a hung, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"I'm so glaf you camf!" Her voice was clearer with him being so close. He was a little shocked at first, but hugged her back.
A nurse came in, interrupting the moment. "Lila Rossi is here to see you." He said as another figure walked in.
Lila. That spiteful lying brat. The girl who ruins everything, everyone's life. A thief! The girl who-
She carried Tikki. Her face looked down. When she saw Adrien she took a sharp breath.
"Gerft dat brfft ouf of hert!" Marinette folded her arms. Adrien just set dumb.
"Marinette, Im here to return your b-bird. I shouldn't have stolen her, it was wrong of me. I don't know what went through my head... actually I just wanted people to think I was better than you. But that's in the past. I won't do something like that again! I promise!" She apologized, walking closer to the bed. "C-can you ever forgive me?" She sounded so sincere.
Marinette hesitated. But relaxed herself.
"Shrr." She was muffled. Lila handed the bird to Adrien who guided Marinette's hand to it. Tikki hopped on the girl's finger, rubbing its feathered head on her softly. Marinette giggled.
"I-I'm sorry about what happened. I shouldn't have lied! I'm your half sister!" Lila moved here shirt collar anxiously. Her cheeks a blushing mess. Adrien was standing right there! She couldn't believe she had to do this in front of him!
"Yrr frrgiverrn." Marinette nodded.
"That's very sweet you two." Sabine smiled.
"I-I have to go now. We have dance, remember Adrien?" Lila perked up.
"I'm staying here today." Adrien stated.
"Fine. I'll tell Mrs. Geritz." Lila spun into her heels and left abruptly.. smiling mysteriously. "Good. Riddance."
