"How in the world do you keep getting into fights with those guys?"

Jeremy sighed deeply, looking over at the boy beside him. He had a small but evident bruise on his upper arm.

They don't know sign, so I flipped the bird instead.

Jeremy snorted as Michael grinned, his hands twisting in familiar signs. Jeremy loved Michael's hands. On some sort of deep level, they were his connection to Michael.

Michael had been mute for as long as Jeremy could remember. According to him, the reason for it was a traumatic event in his childhood that he didn't like to dig up. Jeremy had never pushed. He too had some stuff he wasn't quite ready to share.

Before he had even met Michael, he had seen him using sign with the teachers at school.

"Hey..." Jeremy giggled as he was brought back to a memory. "I remember before I met you... I thought you had this secret language with the teachers."

Yeah. You even ran up to me and excitedly demanded for me to show you the trick behind it. The teacher finally had to come and explain.

Michael let out a silent laugh as he finished Jeremy's recollection.

"We've come a long way since then..." Jeremy reminisced, his goofy grin being replaced by a soft smile.

Seems I still have to remind you to look at my hands when I'm speaking to you, young man.

Jeremy laughed loudly. "I'm trying, I promise. It's just hard to remember when..." Jeremy frowned, wondering if he should finish the thought.

When no one is talking back, right?

Michael smiled sadly. Don't worry, I'm used to it. Besides, you're the only one patient enough to see what I have to say.

Jeremy's own smile returned slightly. "Hey, without you, who'd play video games with me? Who'd stay up with me till three in the morning just to talk about nonsense? I can't imagine a life without you..."

So don't?

Jeremy chuckled again, grinning. "That seems like a plan."

Michael returned the grin until it was replaced gradually by an uncomfortable frown.

Sorry you have to deal with me...

Michael's eyes fell. These moments happened quite a bit, but Jeremy was prepared. He wrapped his arms around Michael quickly.

"Maybe I like 'dealing' with you," Jeremy said quietly, sounding teasing, but sincere.

Michael's eyes watered a little at this, a slow smile returning to his features. "... ove... you..." An almost silent voice whispered into Jeremy's ear.

When Jeremy pulled away from Michael, he saw a deep crimson rushing across the other boy's face, prompting his face to heat up with it.

Looking into Michael's eyes, he saw both sudden expectation, and fear of rejection. "Y-you do?" Jeremy asked, still trying to process this information.

I'm sorry, it was stupid, I should just-

Michael got up to leave, the red now coloring even most of the skin under his glasses. Jeremy grabbed his hand softly.

"No, Michael it wasn't stupid at all! I was just- ... surprised, is all. I never thought you'd... feel the same way."

Both boys were silent, but it wasn't an awkward silence. It was one full of anticipation and hope.

"So I guess... we both just confessed...?" Jeremy asked after a bit.

I think we did.

The two of them inched closer, their movements slowed by their rising anxiety until Michael closed the distance between them, pulling Jeremy into a sudden, but hesitant kiss.

Jeremy's initial response was shock, until he realized how soft it felt. He relaxed as he hugged Michael closer until the two melted into each other. They each smiled against the other's lips. This had been overdue for a long while.

I LOVE MY MUTE BABY. LOOK AT HIM!!! LOOK AT MY BOYS!!! I was going to post this sooner but I fORGOT. THAT WAS A MISTAKE.

*Ahem* I'm sorry I just. I love this AU. It's so simple, but I love simple things.

Anyways, I just spent a little bit fixing it up. The pacing was a bit awkward at parts. But I think??? I'm okay with this result.
