Chapter 7 - The Search For The Offender

Becca's POV

I sat on the ledge overlooking the broken helicopters, munching on an apple.  I put the can of peaches Ghetto gave me in my pack.

Nick was probably gathering supplies for the journey, as well as Shark and AK.  Jin was...somewhere.  I wasn't really sure.  I just sat there, absentmindedly eating my apple and remembering better times here.

Becky's POV  (Yay, New POV)

Found anything, Rebekitah?

No...we can't give up hope, though.  We have to find this thing.

Ok....

I can speak to Rebekitah through telepathy.  I know we're both in Becca's mind, but just go with it.

(-_-)

I flitted (I swear these are words!  Ugh.) through Becca's memories, looking for anything unusual.

I sometimes paused on certain memories, smiling all the while.

Becca playing with Thomas.

Becca's first choir concert.

Becca's first day of middle school.

Becca playing with Sophie in elementa....

Wait...Becca didn't meet Sophie until high school.  Something is here.

You're all probably confused.  I'm sure the author wouldn't mind me explaining.

(-_-)

I'll take that as a yes.

Basically, when we reside in a memory for too long, it starts to change itself, melding with more recent memories.  It doesn't affect Becca at all, but it can be annoying.  We usually have to wait a few days for the memory to correct itself before returning.

This memory though...this one is melded severely with recent ones.  This is supposed to be Becca playing with Katherine in elementary, not Sophie.  The schoolyard is melded with all the elementary schools' schoolyards she's been to.

Rebekitah!  I think I found something!

I felt Rebekitah lock onto my essence and she materialized next to me.

Holy crap.  Something is here.

Her ocean blue eyes flashed.  The memory melted away to reveal a figure.

It looked like Becca from her dimension.  She was a wreck, though.  Her clothes were tattered and ripped.  Her dull white eyes screamed madness.

I backed up in horror.

What is that?!

The thing that is torturing Becca by taking over.

The thing laughed.

OH, I'VE BEEN FOUND OUT.  THAT'S UNFORTUNATE.

I tried to hold back a laugh, so it came out as a snort.  Her voice sounded like a woman trying to talk in a deep male voice.  I shook my head and glared at her.

What the heck are you?

DOES IT MATTER?

Kinda, yeah.

WELL, TOO BAD.

She began to disappear.

OH NO YOU DON'T!
OH NO YOU DON'T!

Rebekitah and I shouted at the same time.

We leapt on her.  She fully formed back, struggling.  We held her essence in place with ours.

WHAT ARE YOU?  I growl.

She smirked evilly.  (D:  Why are all the words I use not actually words?  Have I been lied to?!)

I'M BECCA'S MISSING HALF.  THE PART HER MIND IS REJECTING.  THE PART SHE NEEDS TO BE COMPLETE.

And what exactly would that be?

HER ZOMBIE HALF.  HAVEN'T YOU NOTICED HOW DEPRESSED SHE IS?

I thought about it a bit.

Yeah...she's been depressed lately, but it's because she's half-zombie.  Sluggish, can't speak, and she looks like she's dead.

I sighed.  That isn't the point.  How are you randomly taking over?

SIMPLE.  I FEED OFF THE ENERGY OF HER MEMORIES.  THE HAPPIER THEY ARE, THE MORE ENERGY THERE IS.

She looked us both in the eye.  I'D LOVE TO STAY AND CHAT, BUT I'VE GOT THINGS TO DO.

Then we blacked out.

Becca's POV

I winced slightly, dropping the apple core off the ledge.  What the heck...?  Becky?  Rebekitah?

...no answer.  I was about to recess into my mind to find them when I heard a gun click behind me.

I jumped, and the fact that I was on the ledge didn't help.  I nearly fell off, but someone grabbed the back of my shirt and pulled me back up.

I fell down on the floor, my arms shaking and my eyes wide.

"Umm...sorry, Becca.  Didn't mean to scare you."  Nick's voice exclaimed.

I glared up at him and slapped his leg playfully as I stood up.

"Ow!"  Nick yelped, laughing.  He pulled something from his pack and tossed it to me.  It was a fresh book and quill.  "Thought you'd probably want that."

I smiled and stored it in the side of my pack.

Becky?  Rebekitah?  Where are you?

...still no answer.  I was starting to get worried.

I pulled the book and quill back out and began writing.

'Nick, I'm worried.  Rebekitah and Becky aren't responding to me.'

He read it over.  "Well, isn't that good?  I mean, they can't hurt you or us now."

Crap.  I never told him.  Just gotta remember to make Becky seem bad still even though she's good.

'Oops.  Forgot to mention.  We kinda bonded over the past 4 days that I've been here.  Well, Rebekitah and I, anyway.  Becky is still a bit...iffy.'

Nick read over it and frowned.  "You've been here for 4 days?"

I nodded.  'My real body is in a coma in my dimension.  That means I'm not...really here, yet I am at the same time.  Speaking of that, when my sister "died," her mind actually went back to her body, so she's fine, thankfully.'

Nick smiled as he read it.  "I'm glad your sister is ok.  I'm glad YOU'RE ok."

Behind Nick, AK and Shark came out, sniper guns on their back.  Ghetto had an AK-47 on his back, but no pack.  I'm guessing Jin was still getting ready.

"Good luck, you guys.  You better come back alive."  Ghetto demanded.  "Hey, Ghetto, when we bring Jess back, can I PLEASE have some marshmallows?"  Nick said with a straight face.

Ghetto facepalmed.  "Oh my God, Nick.  For the kajillionth time, I don't have marshmallows."

We all laughed at the exchange.

It's good to joke when there's tension in the air.

Yeah.  Gotta keep hope in times of distress.

Indeed.  Tension could destroy the mission.

My eyes widened.  Becky?  Rebekitah?  What happened to you guys?

...Umm...

We...found the thing that's been taking over you, but she got away.  She looks exactly like you from your dimension...except...her clothes are tattered and her eyes are dull white and filled with madness.

"Becca, you ok?  You're making weird faces."  Nick asked.  There was a smirk on his face but concern was obviously behind it.

'It's ok.  Becky and Rebekitah just started talking like they never left.  They found the thing that's been taking over.'

I hesitated and Nick read over what I had written.  "What is this thing, then?"

Umm...she feeds off your happy memories.  When she's strong enough, she takes over until you awake.  Kinda like when we took over.

I relayed the info she gave me into the book to let them read it.  "Wait, aren't Becky and Rebekitah...evil?"  Shark questioned.  I flipped the book back to the page with the info about them.  He nodded.  "So...what is her name, then?"

Rebekitah hesitantly (I freaking give up.  These are words.) told me her name.

WHAT?!  But...I thought you couldn't do that!

So did we.

I gulped and wrote down her name on the book.

'Her name...is...Rebecca....'
