-one year later-

"Any mail?" Peter yelled, as he ran in the house. "No, nothing yet." Peter flopped on the couch, disappointed. "Peter, don't worry. I'm sure they haven't forgotten, it might just be lost in the mail." Peter twiddled his thumbs, and let out a sigh.

"I'm sorry, Aunt May. I just really miss them."

"I know you do," she said, patting him on the head. "But hey, we're supposed to be celebrating tonight! Come on, I ordered cake and we can watch whatever movie you'd like. How does that sound?"

Peter shrugged his shoulders and mopped down the hallway to his room. He opened his drawer and pulled out a huge box of letters. He began to read one.

dear pete,

we miss you like crazy, and hope you're staying safe over there. things are tough, but we're pushing through. the thought of you makes everyday worth it. please be good for may. we will see you soon. love you to the moon.

A single tear fell onto the paper. "Come home soon," Peter whispered to himself.

"PETER! THE CAKE IS HERE!" May yelled from the other room. Cake was the last thing Peter wanted, but he went anyway. May lit the candles and placed the cake in front of him. "Okay, make a wish!"

He knew exactly what to wish for.

After the two stuffed their bellies with cake, they turned on Peter's favorite movie, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Halfway through the movie, there was a knock a the door. May got up, "I'll go get it."

There was a mailman with a letter in his hands standing in the doorway. "This got lost between the seats, I'm so sorry!" She quickly grabbed it from him and closed the door. "Peter, there's a letter here for you." Peter got up as quickly as he could and ripped it open.

happy birthday bud! wow, we can't believe you're eleven years old! we are so sorry we missed it, but we will make it up to you, we promise you that. we hope you have a special day, and eat lots of cake for us! love you to the moon.
