School was especially hard for Peter, because the war was all anyone ever talked about. They were still in the process of rebuilding, after the bombings had happened. He was so sick of the constant reminder that his dads left him, he couldn't handle it anymore.
"Hey, did you hear they're saying this war could last 10 years?" he heard some kid say behind him. "Shut up," Peter said, slamming his hand on his desk.
"Jeez, Peter, you don't have to be mean."
"Don't say that about the war. It's gonna be over any day now." Peter was raising his voice quite loud, and it caught the teacher's attention. "Is there a problem?" She could now she that Peter was crying.
"I-is it true? Are my d-dads gonna be gone for t-ten years?"
"Oh, no Peter. Don't worry, I'm sure they'll be back real soon." She decided to call May, and have her come pick him up. May didn't know what to say to him. Nothing seemed to lift his spirits.
"Do you want to go get some ice cream?"
"No."
"What about-" Peter began to yell, cutting her off.
"NO, MAY! I DON'T WANT ANYTHING FROM YOU! I JUST WANT MY DADS BACK, BUT THEY LEFT ME! SO JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!"
She was silent the rest of the car ride. When they got home, May decided to write a letter.
