CHAPTER FOUR
Later that night, the group decided to make camp somewhere for the night. Joel had put on a new shirt since he hadn't had one on anymore. Remi and Joel had offered to gather some firewood and the two went off in search of any wood that would be dry enough to start a fire. It didn't take them too long to find some and Remi started gathering the wood as well as some dry grass that would help. She had Boy sit down, waiting patiently as she and Joel gathered the supplies.
"So," Remi spoke, breaking the silence. "What was it like?" She asked, looking at Joel with curiosity.
"What was what like?" He asked, not understanding her question.
"Growing up in a bunker." Remi elaborated.
"It was alright, I guess. Kind of boring, but we had a lot of supplies...But it was kind of lonely too. Everyone else in the bunker I stayed in pretty much had a significant other. And, you know, they were pretty much all older than me. So, there was only so much I could talk to them about." Joel explained, looking at her. "What about you? How'd you survive out here for so long?"
"Lucky, I guess. But I was a bit of a wanderer." Remi admits. "I didn't stay in one place for too long at the beginning. I tried staying in groups, but it was hard to find a group that I liked. I had trouble trusting people at first. And, yeah, I was a bit of a loner. Boy was a good company though." She gestures to the dog. "And we had each other's backs. But when I found that RV you found me in when we first met, I decided to stay there. I was tired of constantly moving and the RV was in a good area."
Joel listened to her as she talked, a frown on his face. He could hear the pain in her voice and he could relate. He felt bad for her, for having to live like that, being alone, never staying in one place for too long. He knew that wasn't the way to live. He wanted her to have a better life. A happier one. "Well, you're not alone anymore." He finally said, sending her a reassuring smile.
Remi looks at him, smiling a bit. "And you're not either." She replied.
After a few more moments of silence, the two gathered as much wood and grass they could before heading back to where Clyde and Minnow were. Clyde and Remi started the fire and they all got comfortable for the night. Remi was sat by Boy, who laid by her with his head on her lap. She pets him, gently running her hand through his fur. Boy had grown attached to her over the years. He was protective of her, which is why he didn't trust Joel at first. But he was glad Remi had someone that would help protect her and keep her safe. He could see that Joel cared for her.
Minnow sat by her, petting Boy every now and then and making him smile and wag his tail. Clyde sat near where Joel sat across from them. Remi smiles a little as she watched Minnow pet Boy, chuckling as the dog made a little noise and his tail wagged. Remi's gaze landed on Joel, who was drawing in his journal he had. She had to admit she was curious and wanted to ask what he was drawing, but Clyde beat her to it. "What you working on there, man?"
"Just a little project I started a while back in my colony. Every time we encountered a new monster, I'd just make a little entry. A drawing. Um, just some info about it. You know, strengths, weaknesses. Stuff like that. Made me feel like I was helping out, you know." Joel explained. Remi thought that was pretty neat and she smiled a bit. She found it sweet how much he cared.
Clyde leans over to see the drawings and nods, his lips curling up a bit. "You're a pretty good artist."
"Thanks." Joel murmured.
"I seen this one. Ugly bastard." Clyde commented, pointing at one of the drawings.
"Yeah." Joel agreed.
"Doesn't like loud noises." Clyde shook his head.
"Oh, yeah." Joel nodded.
"Also doesn't like shotgun blasts to the head. Might wanna add that." Clyde suggested.
Joel smiles a little and began writing it down. "Shotgun to the face. Yeah, got it."
"Do you mind if I..." Clyde's voice trailed off as he reached over to the journal.
"Oh, sure." Joel shrugged, handing it to him.
"Oh, wow." Clyde said with surprise when he landed on a drawing of Agatha 616 starting.
"I was sixteen when it hit." Joel replied.
"What, Agatha 616?" Remi questioned, looking up from the book she was reading. She had taken it out of her backpack a few moments ago. It was one she had read many times but it was one of her favorites.
"Yeah." Joel responded.
"Yeah, they sent everything up at once to take her down. They had the balls to call us the lucky ones just 'cause whatever the h**l was in those things didn't affect us. Ain't nothing lucky about getting kicked off the top of the food chain." Clyde comments. Remi turned her attention to Minnow when she laid down under her blanket, curling up and closing her eyes. She had leaned her head against Remi's leg a little, her head facing the fire. Remi smiled a bit and continued to read her book.
"Yeah, my parents thought if we could just make it out of Fairfield, we might have a shot." Joel sighed.
"Wait, wait, wait. You're from Fairfield?" Clyde asked with surprise.
"Yeah, why?" Joel questioned, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Man, I've never met anyone who made it out of Fairfield." Clyde admits. "That place was basically ground zero. S**t, I've only heard horror stories."
"Yeah, it was pretty bad." Joel agreed.
"Your parents, uh..." Clyde's voice trailed off as he looked back at Joel.
"Oh, uh, no." Joel clears his throat. "No, it's just me. Couldn't save 'em."
"You putting that on yourself?" Clyde asked him.
"Mm..." Joel shrugged, staring out at the fire. Remi glanced at him with a small frown. She knew he probably did blame himself for his parent's death. She felt bad for him. He seemed like a good person. He didn't deserve any of that.
Clyde sighs. "You're from Fairfield, man. You shouldn't even be here. Right? You're more of a survivor than I thought." He smiled a little as he looked at Joel.
Joel looks a bit surprised and his lips curled up into a smile. "That's the coolest thing anyone's ever said to me."
Clyde chuckles. "It's a good start." He hands the book back to Joel. "Keep it up. Book like this could save someone's life out here."
"Thanks, Clyde." Joel replied.
"Hey," Remi speaks up, gaining Joel's attention. "Can I see some of your drawings?" She asked, tilting her head a bit.
"Uh, sure." Joel nodded, reaching over to hand the journal to her. Remi smiled and took it, flipping through the pages. She was impressed by his art skills and he was able to capture the monsters in a way that made it seem realistic.
"You're really talented, Joel. This is amazing." She told him, smiling.
"Thanks." Joel replied, looking down and rubbing the back of his neck with a small smile.
"You, um, you sure your girl's worth it?" Clyde questions as he tended to the fire, keeping it alive. "Coming all this way?"
"Yeah. Yeah, she is." Joel admitted, smiling a bit.
"Don't settle, Joel." Minnow spoke up and Remi glanced down at her with a bit of surprise. She had thought Minnow fell asleep.
"She's right. You don't have to. Not even at the end of the world." Clyde sent Joel a smile, patting his shoulder. Joel smiled a little, nodding in agreement. Remi handed him his journal back and went back to reading her book.
It was silent for a few moments before Clyde suddenly claps, gaining everyone's attention. Boy had lifted his head up with a whine and Joel had let out a groan since he had just laid down. "Time to break camp! Let's go!"
"Uh, what-"
"Lesson two. You get a hot meal or a good night's sleep. Not both." Clyde told a confused Joel as he, Minnow and Remi packed their things.
"Not both." Minnow agreed.
"Are you being serious?" Joel asked with raised eyebrows.
"Something will have smelled our food and be all over this camp within the hour." Clyde answered.
Joel's eyes widen and he looks at him with surprise. "Why wouldn't you tell me that, though? Uh, I didn't-I didn't do either."
"I can't tell you everything, man. Keep up." Clyde shrugged as he put the fire out.
Remi chuckled at seeing Joel's shocked expression and she patted his shoulder, walking past him. Boy got up and stretched, shaking himself. He followed behind her as she and the others continued their journey. Remi did glance over her shoulder to see if Joel was catching up with them and sure enough, he was. She smiled a little and faced forward as she kept walking.
She didn't want to admit it, but she was really starting to like Joel. He was a nice guy. And she didn't mind having him around. But she didn't want to get too attached, though. She was afraid she was going to lose him too. That's what always happened. She always lost the people she cared about. And she didn't want to get hurt. She didn't want her heart broken. So she tried to keep her feelings to herself and tried to be careful about how she felt. But she knew that was easier said than done.
