Chapter 7
A/N: Disturbanceduck stop making fun of me about this story or I'll kick you in the foot like I did today! (And happy late birthday!😄)
I wake up before Carl or Michonne does. I'm a little embarrassed that Michonne had to of seen us together.
I untangle myself from Carl's arms, careful not to wake him up.I grab my axe and slowly open the door and hop out the car, closing the door but not so it latches.
I can hear Rick and Daryl talking.
"She's just gone." Daryl says.
"We'll find her." Rick reassures him.
I walk down to the forest edge soundlessly. It's leaves aren't their bright green.
I enter the forest and keep walking straight. I search the bushes for berries, but instead I find moss. Indicating that a stream is nearby.
I pick up my pace, suddenly not becoming soundless anymore, but like a normal person who has never needed to depend on the quite.
I find the little creek that runs through the forest. Its guarded by rocks and looks clean enough.
I walk down to it and try to not to slip on the rocks. Fish swim down the stream. I get my knife out of my pocket and patiently wait for a slower fish to swim by.
One, a medium sized bass swims down the steam and I immediately stab it with my knife. The splashing of the water attracted a Walker and I could hear its growls behind me.
I grab the dead fish up and turn around quickly. With my axe in hand, I walk up to it and stab it in the head. It falls to its knees and then lands on the ground with a thud.
I return to the creek and wait for another slow fish to swim by. As I wait I dunk my cupped hands in the cold water and scoop up some and toss it onto my face.
I then take the time to unbutton my flannel and wash it. Its too bad I don't have any soap, but at least it won't look as dirty or smell as bad.
After I scrub it, I set it out on one of the rocks to let it at least dry a little before I head back.
The sun was almost fully up in the horizon, meaning I haven't been gone too long.
I pull off my canteen off my belt and let the cold water run into it.
We usually just drink lake water or really hot bottles of water that you could make tea in.
Two other fish swim by and I stab the first one and chase the second one around for a little bit till I finally get it.
With three dead fish tied to my belt and a canteen full of cold water, I grab my flannel and tie it around my waist. My black tank top is filled with holes and I make a mental note to find another one before long.
I follow the trees back to the Cars and hear Carl's voice. "She couldn't have left! I would've known! I need to find her!" He sounds worried.
I pick up my pace and am almost to the tree line.Rick tries to calm his son down as I come into view of the cars. "I'm sure she's not gone." I run towards Carl and tackle him in a hug.
"I can't believe you thought I'd leave." I told him, a little hurt by the statement.
"But you were gone! " he protested.
"But I promised you I wouldn't leave. I'll never break that promise. " I let go of him and look at the rest of the small group. Rick awkwardly scratches the back of his head and Daryl kicks some rocks with the tip of his toe. Michonne smiles at us.
"So like, where'd you go?" Rick asks.
I untie the fish off my belt. "To a little stream. It has fish and I filled up my canteen. I can show you guys it if you want. "
Daryl looks at the fish in my hand. "You a hunter?" He asks in a deep gruff voice.
I shrug. "I've learned to hunt these past couple of years, but fishing is what I do best."
Michonne starts a fire and we sit down around it and cook the fish over it. Rick stands up. "We should be going. The sooner we get there, the better. But Lauren, could you show us that stream?"
I nod and take another bite of my fish. My canteen gets passed around as everyone enjoys the cool water.
We gather up our stuff and I lead them into the forest. I can hear the water running and speed up a little. But as we get closer I can also hear the moans. I look down at the walker that I had killed just an hour ago and then back up to the stream.
There are two walkers in the water, their guts spilling into it. "Damn!" I throw my hands in the air in anger and let them hit heavily on my sides. The walkers try to climb up the mudy sides.
"Well, there goes that." Rick mumbles. Carl sighs and I grab my axe out of my belt.
"What're you doin?" He asks me.
"Killing them." I reply and jog towards them. I get to the edge, just close enough to take a good swing and hit them, just not close enough so they can drag me in.
Carl appears by my side with a knife. "Not alone you aren't." I chuckle and swing my axe. It imbeds itself into the soft skull of thr Walker and blood flows down it's face.
Carl stabs his Walker in the head but looses his grip on the knife and can't pull it out. The Walker still claws at him but now he is weaponless besides his gun strapped to his belt. I swing and hit the walker dead square in the head. My axe didn't go in as easily so I knew this one was a more recent Walker. I pull my axe out and the Walker drops into the water next to the other one. Carl reaches down and grabs his knife out of the Walkers head.
Rick and Daryl stop talking as soon as we return. "Off to Terminus we go." Rick says and leads the way to the road.
We get back on and continue following the tracks to our left to a new beginning. Terminus.
