Chapter 44

That same day Rick asks members of our old group if they want to go. Carl and I practically beg to go, but Rick refuses.

"You have to stay here and watch Judith and the rest of Alexandria." He tries to pull that one on us.

"There's plenty of people still here." I cross my arms. I know I shouldn't talk back, but I'm bored here. I belong out there, fighting, not here just sitting around waiting for something to happen.

"No is no. And that's final." Rick says a bit more sternly and walks away to get ready to leave. Carl takes it a lot easier than I do.

"What's up with you, you didn't put up much of a fight." I turn to my boyfriend.

He shrugs and picks Judith up off the floor where she was playing with her blocks. "I know it'll be useless. Besides, it's not going to be anything exciting." I agree with him, but the desire to be out there only grows stronger.

I follow Carl outside to the RV, which is parked outside the house, and help them load it up with supplies.

"We should be back in a day." Rick tells Carl. "Sorry about this morning." Rick awkwardly brings up the scene of him and Michonne rushing out of the same bedroom getting dressed.

"Don't worry, I always knew it'd happen at some point." He smiles to his dad.

"It was really obvious." I tease as I pass by and grab the last box. Soon the RV is loaded up and the group heads out.

I'm left with Carl and Judith since all my friends seem to be busy at the moment or still sleeping. It was only about eight in the morning.

"Want to go for a walk?" I ask suddenly.

"Where?" He asks skeptically.

"In the woods."

"Knew it," He mumbles under his breath. "I'll see if Tara can watch Judith. She's not on guard duty right now, is she?"

I think for a moment, trying to remember the guard schedule, something I've done in my free time to decide who would be best to get around to get out. "No, right now it's Adam. He should be easy to get around."

Carl hands me Judith. "I'll go see if she can come over and watch her." He smiles at his sister and runs out the door. I sit on the floor and play with Judith for a while.

The thing that gets me about Judith is it's as if she understands what's going on. Most babies would have cried every five minutes, but from what I've heard and seen from being out there with her she would go hours without crying, like she knew it'd attract walkers. She doesn't seem afraid of them or afraid of strangers like most babies would. Hell, I'm fifteen and still scared of them, strangers more than the walkers.

Carl comes back shortly with Tara who claimed she was hoping someone would ask her to do something or she would've died of boredom. I think she was just saying that to be kind. She made us promise to be back by noon because her and Heath are going on a run at that time. We promised and headed out, not telling her that we were going over the wall.

We use the metal slots between the pillars in the wall like a ladder and climb over, getting back in will be alot harder since when we rebuilt the wall we covered the slots on the outside with metal patches. But it's ok, I made sure that no one cut down the branch that hung over the inside.

Carl grabs my hand as soon as we are deep in the woods. "I miss being out here." He sighs and looks around at the trees and a distant walker.

"Me too. I mean, I do and I don't. I like being able to get water when ever I need it and eat meals, but I miss the adrenaline rushes and the excitment. It's weird."

It's almost winter by now and all the green leaves have changed into different shades and fallen to the ground. Our footsteps echo throughout the still air.

"Before the attack, we'd be in school right now." Carl reminds me with his nose scrunched up.

"Ugh, I hated it. What was the point in learning when the world had ended?" Mrs. Candella died in the attack and everyone else was too busy trying to rebuild and stuff to even think about starting the school back up.

The groans of a walker come into earshot and I grab my axe and look around, Carl grabs his knife and does the same. Three walkers appear from behind a cluster of trees and make their way towards us.

I take the one closest to us and swing my axe at its head, but it's arm gets in the way as it reaches for me and my axe ends up sinking into its thick shoulder.

I try to pull it free while maintaining a safe distance from its mouth. I didn't realize the good size decline in the earth until I lose my balance and tumble down it, rocks digging into my back and roots hitting my face.

I free fall for couple of feet and land on my stomach. Black dots blur my vision and the breath is taken from my lungs. Thankfully the only thing that looks to be broken is my pinkie finger which is twisted in a weird position and hurts like hell. I scramble up and see that the walker is a few feet in front of me, but a couple more have joined him. The walker had been pulled down with me but my axe had been pulled out in the tumble, leaving me without a weapon.

"Lauren!" Carl yells in panic.

"I'm fine!" I'm totally not fine.

The walkers advance and I look for some sort of weapon, anything really. Shots fill the air as the first walker goes down. For a moment I think it's Carl.

"Lauren?!" He yells.

"Carl, run!" I shout up to him as another shot is fired and I realize that's it's coming from the right of me and Carl is to the left of me.

"I'm not leaving you!" He argues.

The decline was more of a cliff than anything and there wasn't a fast way up as much as I could tell.

"Just go! Get back and tell the others! It's no good if both of us are dead!" I pray that he won't argue and it comes true when I see his grey flannel disappear from the cliffs edge.

The last walker is shot and I scan the area for a place to hide. All the trees down here don't have branches low enough to climb and I know it's too late to do anything when I hear advancing footsteps. I try then to run, but someone grabs the back of my sweater before I even get a foot off the ground.

"Well, well, well. What do we have here?" A man with a receding hair line and missing back teeth smiles menacingly at me as he spins me around and grips my arm tightly.

I swing at him with my free arm and clip his jaw. He yelps in pain and shoves me towards a burly looking man twice my size who grabs both of my arms and makes me face the other man.

"We just saved your life," the man touches his tender jaw. "And this is how you repay us?"

"Who are you?" I spit at him.

He smiles at laughs. "A little fiesty, aren't we? Well, we are the Saviors and that's all you need to know." I try to glare at him until something happens, but nothing does. "Now, honey, we don't want to hurt you." He advances closer to me and runs a finger along my jaw line. I jerk my head away and he stops. "We just want to know where you came from."

"No where."

"As if." He scoffs. "You look too clean and well fed to have come from no where. Want to try that again? Also explain who you were with. Don't think we didn't hear you shouting to someone." He grips my chin to make sure I'm looking at him even though I was staring daggers at him only moments before.

I don't say anything but spit on him. He jerks back and wipes his face with his sleeve. His face fills with anger and grows red. He pulls his hand back and punches me in the stohmach. The punch takes the air out of my lungs but the guy holding my arms doesn't loosen his grip so all I can do is stand there and gasp for breath.

Mr. No teeth turns to big guy. "We'll take her back to camp and try to get something out of her. She has a camp and they need to pay their dues to the boss."

"How do we know she isn't from the Hilltop?" Burly man asks with his deep voice.

"I've been to the Hilltop and the Kingdom loads of times and haven't seen her there at all. She's from a different place. Let's load her up."

Burly man starts to drag me and I try to resist which only ends up with him throwing me over his shoulder like a useless sack of potatoes. But that doesn't stop me from kicking and hitting him.

We don't walk very far until we reach a road and I hear a door being opened before I'm literally thrown into a backseat. The door slams and I stupidly try to open it, only to discover that they put child lock on it. The two men get into the front seat, Mr. No teeth in the driver's seat and Burly man in the passenger's side. Burly man holds a gun in his hand and I know that I can't get out now.

Mr. No teeth starts the car and takes off down the road. I try and memorize every turn and curve we make but we make too many and take alot of back roads. It's as if they're trying to make me confused.

"It's getting pretty stuffy in here, why not roll down the window?" I try.

Mr. No teeth snorts. "Nice try girly, but no go." He turns the heat up to blast and shuts off the vents in the front, leaving me with broken vents in the back that blast hot air in my face.

After half an hour of driving, they pull up to an factory looking building and stop the car at the barbed wire fence. Mr. No teeth and Burly man get out the car and Burly man opens the door on the driver's side and yanks me out.

"Hey, Simon." One of the guards who looked to be in his twenties with shirt brown hair greets Mr. No teeth.

"Open up, Alexander." Simon says rudely.

"Who's the girl?" Bill asks and eyes me up and down. I stare at Alexander until he looks away back at Simon aka Mr. No teeth.

"Don't know. She won't say anything about anything." Simon explains as Alexander opens up the gates. They push me through the open gates and towards the building.

"Welcome to the third outpost." Simon holds his arms out towards the dingy building. "If you think you'll like it here then think again."

A/N: who wants to cry with me for I couldn't watch the mid-season finale???

Anywho, things are starting to pick up eh? There should only be a few  more chapters in this book... I know, sad right?
