Chapter 4

We run down the road and towards the train tracks. We eventually stop a couple blocks away from the house.

"What happened? " Michonne asked, putting a hand on Rick's shoulder. He looked at her hand and then back at her and then avoided eye contact. I chuckle to myself at the obvious love they had for each other.

"I was upstairs and suddenly these guys come in. I hid under the bed until they left the room and went downstairs. Had to kill one of 'em on my way out through the bathroom window. I guess he turned as I was about to shoot another guy on the porch, because I hear gun shots and the man runs back in." He explained, taking breaths in between each couple of words.

"Where do we go now? " Carl asks.

I look down the road and see train tracks. "Do we follow those?" I question.

We all look at Rick. He must've been the leader at the prison because even Michonne looks to him for an answer.

He nods his head and we make our way to them.

As we get closer, Carl runs ahead and points to a sign. "Terminus,Sanctuary for all, community for all. Those who arrive Survive." He read aloud. He looked back with a questioning look on his face.

I jog up next to him and study the map. It has different lines drawn in bold black marker, outlining the railroads around here. A big red dot marks where the camp would be. "All the tracks end there." I turn to them.

"It may be an old map,if we see anymore along the way we'll check it out. They have to have someone come out to make sure they don't get all faded." Rick points out.

Michonne nods in agreement and we continue to follow the tracks.

I balance on the railing of the tracks and walk on it. Michonne does the same and soon Carl follows. It ended up turning into a competition on who can stay on the longest.

"I'm gonna win!" Carl exclaims with his arms stretched out on either side to maintain his balance.

"Nu uh!" I laugh as almost fall.

Rick turns around and looks back at us. "What're you three doing?" He chuckles.

"Having a contest that I'm totally going to win." Michonne stumbles a little as she explains.

"No way!" Carl laughs as he sticks a foot out, loosing his balance.

"Winner gets a choice in candy bar!" I laugh and move my brown messenger bag to the middle of my back so it wouldn't make me off balance.

Rick laughs and shakes his head. He turns back around and continues to walk.

Michonne sticks her arm out and nudges me in the back, causing me to stumble and fall into the grass. "No fair!" I laugh as I stand up.

"Lauren's out!" Carl chuckles.

Michonne tries to catch him off guard by throwing her arm out towards him. But she looses balance and falls off the rail.

"I win!" Carl exclaims as he hops down off the rail and onto the tracks. "Your technique won't work on me!"

Michonne reluctantly opens her bag and pulls out two candy bars.

"Not the bigcat." She whines.

"Hey, winners choice!" Carl laughs and takes the Bigcat candy bar. Michonne groans as he opens up the wrapper.

Rick looks back again smiles at the three of us. I smile back at him and then direct my attention back to Carl.

He breaks the candy bar into three and gives me and Michonne a piece and then breaks his in half and gives a piece to his dad.

I savor the sweet taste of the chocolate, stale or not, chocolate is chocolate. We continue down the tracks.

Up ahead I can see a train car. Its color used to be red but now rust takes over most of it. There is a sheet-like thing snapping in the wind.

We walk a little faster over to it and stand in front of it. It has the exact same words on it as the sign a couple miles back did.

Terminus,
Sanctuary for all
Community for all.
Those who arrive, survive.

We look to Rick. "Do we go?" Michonne asks.

He sighs and nods. "Let's go."

We continue our path and I stay close to Carl.

Carl and I walk behind Michonne and Rick who are lost in conversation. We share a water bottle and pass it back and forth between us.

"Let's play a game." I suggest.

"Huh? "

"Like a car game. You know, I spy, real or not real, etcetera. "

"Oh. OK. I got one." He thinks for a moment. "I have to guess your life before the apocalypse and you have to tell me whether I'm hot or cold."

I smile. "Betcha can't do it. "

"I bet I can guess in twenty guesses. Losser has to carry the bags." He smirks.

"Deal."

"Um, you lived in Georgia."

"Cold!" I exclaim. "One."

"Kentucky?"

"Warmer. Two."

"Illinois? "

"Bingo. Three."

"What're you doing down here? They have Chicago."

"Those four people and I saw what happened to it, it got overrun. Thought we should come to Atlanta, but that was a bad idea." I look at the ground.

"Oh."

"Continue?" I look at him.

He smiles a closed lip smile. "You liked a band."

"No dip!" I chuckle.

"OK OK. Um, One Direction? "

"Ah, Niall Horan was bae. Four, which is a name of one of their albums!" I chuckle. A walker comes walking out of the forest and I grab my axe. "I got it!" I call to Rick and Michonne who both grabbed their weapons. I turn to Carl. "Hold that thought."

I swing my axe like a baseball bat and hit the Walker right in the head. It goes limp and falls to the ground. I pull my axe out of it's head.

Rick and Michonne look around at the rest of the forest for walkers, when they don't see anymore they continue their conversation.

I jog back to Carl. "Niall? Isn't that the blonde haired kid from Ireland? " he asks.

"Yep. He was a cute little Irish kid." I adjust my bag to rest on my other shoulder.

"So, you like blonde haired guys?" He asks innocently.

I shrug. "I like guys who make me smile, who I feel I can talk all night to, who like all my flaws and don't mind my demons. " The imagine Dragons song 'Demons' pops into my head and I struggle to remember the lyrics. Its been so long since I've listened to music and I miss it. I love music. Its the time I can express myself without annoying people.
I look back at Carl who looks deep in thought. He looks so cute like that. His eyes stare at the ground and his nose crinkled up a little. No! No. He's your friend. Do NOT fall for him Lauren!

"What're you thinking about?" I ask him.

"Uh...Um, nothing. " He looks worried.

"Come on, we're friends. You can tell me anything. It's not like I have anyone to tell." I nudge him with my shoulder.

He nudges me back. "Don't worry about it Mrs. Horan!" He smiles.

"I was NOT that type of fan!" I scrunch up my nose. "I had my posters and my songs. Plus I was eleven. I really didn't know what love is, just that I liked One Direction and had a small crush on some guy. Thats basically it, I couldn't even date at the time."

"You couldn't date?"

"I was eleven. I hope my mom didn't allow me to date. If times were still then, I bet she still wouldn't allow me to date."

"Times are different now. Gotta take as much love as you can before it's too late." He has a serious expression on his face.

Rick and Michonne come to a halt at a cluster of cars. "We're gonna stay here for the night. I'll take first watch." Rick tells us.

The sun dipped behind the trees and I could see the faint glow of stars.

"I'll do watch with you." Michonne turned to him. I secretly fangirled inside my head. Rick smiled.

"You two can sleep in the car till it's your-" Three Walkers groaned and walked out of the forest. Rick stabbed the first in the head and Michonne sliced off the other twos heads. "Your turn for watch." he finishes out of breath.

Rick builds a small camp fire and Carl and I lay in the front seats that are halfway down. I stare at the roof of the car and finger my dog tags.

"You had siblings." Carl continues the game.

"Warmer. Five."

"Sister and Brother." He shifts his head to look at me.

I continue to look at the roof. "Warm. Six."

"Brothers?"

I turn to him. The fire outside casts shadows across his face. "Three. Seven."

"Tell me about them?" He asks.

I sigh at the memories of me and my brothers. Tears sting my eyes. "I was the middle child. My older brother, John, was two years older. My second youngest brother, Zach. And then the youngest, CJ."

"Fun."

I sniffle and wipe the tears from my face. "You had siblings?"

He looks at the roof. "I had a sister. Judith was her name. She was born in the prison so she's still little."

"What happened to her?"

"I don't know." He whispers.

I hear shouting outside and bolt upright. Carl looks around frantically while I grab for my axe.

Suddenly a man with a beard smashes the window on my side, sending glass flying at me, cutting me. He Yanks open the door and I try to swing at him but he catches my arm with my axe in my hand and drags me out. I yell and so does Carl as another man Yanks him out the car.

Rick fights a guy and another guy has Michonne punching him.

The man that has my arm twists it in a painful position till I drop my axe. I try to punch him with my left hand but he dodged it. I kicked him in the man parts and he let go of me, groaning.

I ran around the car and found Carl struggling with a man with blonde hair. I jump on the man's back and knock him to the ground, punching him in the face.

He flips me around and gets up. He holds my arms behind my back with one hand and holds a knife to my neck with the other.

Bearded guy has Carl pinned under him, holding his face to the ground. Carl yells my name and I try to loosen my arms but the guy with the knife presses it closer to my neck, drawing some blood. I cry silently, not daring to make a sound.

Rick and Michonne are held at gun point with guns pressed to their heads. There are at least three other guys standing in front of us.

This is how where going to die.

A/N: sucky ending I know. But I thought this would be a good place to stop for this chapter. Was Carl worried that Lauren might not like him? Or just that he worries that he'll never find true love? Got loads of plans for this story!
