Chapter 26
The night was long and tiring. We fought with the doors first what seemed like forever but was merely hours.
Sometime during the night, when the storm died down, we dispersed and feel asleep wherever our legs gave out. I somehow managed to get to a back corner, and I know I was beat.
I was awaken by Maggie and Sasha yelling. I jumped up and grabbed my axe. They stood there with a guy who I didn't recognize and I guess had a smiling problem. He had short brown hair with a slight curl to it, and looked clean and cut. This can not be good news.
"Good morning, my name's Aaron ." He started. "I would like to speak to the leader."
Rick looked at the rest of us and then stepped up to Aaron, he looked at Maggie and Sasha who stood behind the stranger. "Does he have weapons?"
Sasha threw Rick a small brown backpack. "We checked him, he had nothing but a weird toy looking gun and this backpack." She explained as Rick rummaged through the pack. He took out the small orange-red gun and examined it.
"A flare?" He held up the gun to Aaron. "Why?"
Aaron shifted uncomfortably, but the stupid smile stayed plastered on his face. "It's to warn my group if I'm in trouble. Which brings me here. I would like you guys to join our group, it's not to far from here and has walls and safety. All you have to do is audition." He stopped and chuckled to him self. "Look at me, I'm making it sound like an audition for a play." Aaron waited for us to at least smile, but when none of us did he continued on. "No, nothing like that. All you have to do is be interviewed." He jerked his chin to his bag. "If you look in the envelope, you'll see pictures of Alexandria."
Rick shifted through the bag till he found the envelope. "He doesn't have a weapon, that means there's more around here." He glanced up at the rest of us. Daryl and Glenn rushed to the small cutouts in the barn walls and looked out into the forest.
Glenn looked confused. "I don't see anyone."
Aaron spoke up. "I can assure you that nobody else is out there. It's just me, and you have me here. I promise."
Rick glared at him. I couldn't see his face, but I could tell because he kept his head up at mid level. "Promises have never worked in our favor." He glared at him till Aaron diverted his eyes to the wooden barn floor. Rick opened the envelope and took out the pictures.
"Sorry for the lack of color. We found an old Polaroid and used that." Aaron explained with that same stupid smile back on his face. The smile wasn't like a smirk or an evil smile, like what we saw in Terminus, but more of a welcoming smile.
Rick examined each picture carefully. The rest of us stayed with our weapons ready.
"If you look closer, you can see that we have apple trees and grow some of our own food." Aaron put in. He acts like this is a tour. I roll my eyes at the crazy man.
Our leader looks through the pictures a little more and then suddenly he looks up. Again I couldn't see his facial expressions, but he jerked his head up and spoke quickly, so I could tell he was spooked. "Why aren't there people in these pictures?"
"What?" Aaron seemed confused by the sudden question.
"People. In these pictures there aren't any people." Rick held up the pictures as if to remind the man of them.
He seemed to stutter over his words. "Um...well, I don't know. Y-you see, they all have jobs and such. So they- they weren't outside I guess. I didn't take the pictures."
"What do you do to your people?" Rick growled.
"Nothing!" Aaron's eyes widened in horror of the question. "If you'll only come see Alexandria. I have a car up the road."
"Where is the camp?" Rick asked.
"I can't tell unless-"
"I'm not afriad to shoot you. Where is the camp?" Rick threatened and unclipped his holster. Aaron blurted out the roads and location of the camp, glancing at the gun in Rick's holster every few words.
Rick looked back, not at us, but to Michonne and they seemed to share a silent messege. I thought he was going to agree and go, instead he drew back his fist and planted it right in the scared man's face.
There was a few "What the heck man?" And "whoa."
Michonne crosses her arms. "Last time I checked, that was a 'let's trust the man' Look and not a 'knock the man out look'."
Rick shrugged. "I don't think we can trust him."
Glenn walked up to him. "I think we have his word. There isn't anyone that I can see out there. They'd be stupid to stand out there with all the walkers drawn to here from the storm last night."
He thought for a moment. "Ok, we send a team out to see if he's telling the truth about the car. If he is, then we go and check it out. If not, then we kill him."
Harsh.
Almost all the group volunteered to go check it out. Daryl and Carol were to go and scout the woods. The rest of us were to stay here and look after an unconscious Aaron.
The group looking for the car left and then Daryl and Carol. Rick took Judith from Oscar when she started to cry.
Austin and Kennedy started to tie up Aaron, struggling to pick up the man's shoulders and drag him to the post.
As they finished tying him up he started to gain consciousness. He seemed confused to where he was at first and then remembered. He moved his jaw, I guess to see if it was broken. "Mighty strong punch you got there." He compliments Rick.
Rick just rolls his eyes as he tries to smash walnuts for the hungry toddler in his arms.
"She's hungry." Aaron stated the obvious.
"And what makes you say that?" Kennedy mumbles, sitting against the barn doors.
Aaron ignored the sarcastic remark. "There's fresh applesauce in my bag in a jar, I bring it for samples. You can give it to her."
Rick slowly turns around. "And how do I know if you didn't poison it?"
Aaron groaned. "You think I'd poison your baby?"
"You might." Rick replied as he dug out the clear jar of applesauce. I barely remember what it used to taste like. He opened it and took a spoon full out and held it to Aaron's mouth. "You try it."
The man groaned again. "I hate applesauce. "
"Either you eat it and we see if you die of poison, or I kill you now."
"My mom used to make me eat food I didn't like to try and get me to be a man. Applesauce was one." Aaron pleaded. You'd think we were telling him to eat a bullet.
"Eat." Rick commanded.
Aaron hesitated and then finally ate the applesauce. He looked like he was trying not to hurl it back up. "See? Not poisoned."
Rick still looked skeptical and tried a little bit. He finally looked convinced and started to feed Judith it.
"You have an hour. If the group doesn't come back in that time then a bullet goes straight through your head." Rick explains to the man.
"I understand that you are skeptical. I can only imagine what you've guys been through being out here so long." Aaron blurts out in defence.
Morgan shook her head and chuckled. "You can't even imagine it. We've been through cannibals, loosing people, heards, and much more. Trust us, we can easily kill you with no problem."
Just then did Daryl and Carol come back. "There isn't anyone out there, Rick." Carol confirmed.
Rick glanced down to the hostage. "So far your story is true, we'll find out when the group gets back."
So we sat there for an hour and listened to Aaron talk nervously about Alexandria and how thick their walls were and how each person got a house but us teens were to be put with someone. He also talked about an infirmary which caught my attention.
There was about three minutes left when the group came back. Relief crossed Aaron's face.
"It's as clear as a baby's behind." Abrham confirmed in his weird way.
"Ok, we'll go." Rick finally agreed. "But one thing off, and you die." He told Aaron and then instructed Oscar and Dylan. They untied him and led him outside to the car that the group brought back just like Aaron said. They seemed to have found three others and we all piled in them. Michonne, Daryl, Aaron, Glenn, and Rick rode in Aaron's car. I got stuck with Abrham, Rosita, Dylan and Eugene in a car that smelled like that truck at the cabin where we found Dylan and Austin. Or where they found us. Either way it smelled like that.
It was becoming dark by now since it was around noon when we were all startled awake. Rick's car was ahead of us with the other two in front of them.
Rick suggested that we take the back way to the community so the people wouldn't expect us to come up the main road. I could see a flare go up way in the distance, but didn't pay much attention to it. It wasn't one of our group members, so it must've been the people of Alexandria.
I was drifting off to sleep when Abrham suddenly slammed on the breaks and sent me face first into the head rest on the passenger's side. I quickly recover and find that Rick and themes car had stalled and Daryl hopped out the car, pulling legs and arms out of the hood after running over some of the walkers in the biggest heard I've seen all throughout the apocalypse.
The group members in the car all jumped out, barely escaping the walkers grasps. Abrham is about to turn around to let the group in and get the hell out of there until he notices another group of walkers behind us.
"Get out the car!" He demands and we all run out. I grab my axe and then run into the woods, following the rest of them. I could see the light from the gunshots shot by Rick and the others. Eugene, Dylan and I lost Abrham and Rosita, so we ran towards the shots. Eugene was as useless as a stick. He didn't want to kill and kept bawling like a baby. He got into a few close calls but I saved him. Dylan stuck by him while I killed a couple walkers that blocked us from them. I could see Michonne's katana flash in the gun light and see her dreads swinging wildly. The flare was shot in a walkers head, but I couldn't tell who did it.
We ran over to her and helped her fight off some walkers that were enclosing Rick and Daryl. Glenn and Aaron were no where to be seen.
We fought our way back to the road, in front of the heard. Glenn, Abrham and them came running out of the forest, I noticed Aaron's hands were untied and made a note to keep my eyes on him.
We ran down the road until we found the others who waited two miles away for saftey on the side of the road. We would've missed them if it weren't for Maggie to run into Glenn's arms.
Aaron was freaking out and I didn't have a clue why. "We have to go towards the flare." That's all I heard before I heard a familiar voice behind me and some one sling their arm around my shoulders.
"Had me worried." Carl hugged me and I pecked him on the lips.
"I can hold my own." I reply and pretend to be offended as I wipe walker blood off my face.
"I know you can." He smirks. "But that don't mean I can't be worried."
We ended up having to go in two cars, and I ended up on a floor board across from Kennedy since we were the shortest in the car. Carl sat in the middle of Daryl and Carol and kept nudging my foot with the tip of his boot, and each time I kicked him back.
Daryl got tired of our game and set his crossbow at my feet and threatened us if we kicked his cross bow.
We drove for several miles and then stopped. I couldn't tell where we were until Carol opened the door, causing me to almost fall out onto a gravel road. I get out and notice that we're in an abandoned town. This can't be Alexandria. Can it?
Aaron jumps out the car and runs into the building in front of us, shouting for someone named Eric. We follow him in cautiously and expect a guard or leader of some sort. Instead an I'll looking man appears with his foot wrapped up.
"Hello, I'm Eric." The red headed man introduces himself.
Rick rushes over and pins Aaron to the wall with his forearm under Aaron's chin. "I thought there wasn't anyone else here." He growled.
It went quiet as everyone waited for guns to come out blazing. I mean, that's what you expect when someone lies, Right?
A/N: Sorry guys if this chapter was confusing or anything. I didn't eat dinner and I'm starving and tired from being in a car for 12 hrs. Ugh.
