Chapter 21
"Hold the door for me!" Gabriel groans as the Walkers try to get in.
Austin and I rush over to it and take it from Gabriel. My almost healed shoulder aches, but I don't complain.
Father Gabriel pried up the wooden floorboard, which revealed a crawl space under the church. He then runs to grab the door from us. "Quickly. Go under there and out. I'll go last since I was the one who brought them here. Go." He dug his heals into the ground. He shoved a chair under the knob to help hold the door shut.
Carl went first as Michonne handed him Judith. It was Morgan, then Zainab, then Austin and Oscar, Dylan, and lastly Michonne and me. I slide into the opening and got onto my hands and knees, the knees on my pants becoming soaked due to the damp ground. I crawl through the short, damp crawl space until I get to the edge. I stand up once I'm out and dust my pants off and rub my hands together to get the dirt off. Soon Michonne comes from under the church and a minute later comes Gabriel.
Oscar faces us. "If y'all don't mind me asking. What the hell happened?" We all look to Father Gabriel who stands there awkwardly.
He rings his hands together and refuses to look at any of us. "I, uh, I went to the high school to see what happened and the...um...glass broke and-and the walkers got out and chased me here." He says nervously.
Michonne starts undoing her belt "Great. Morgan, come help me close the doors to trap them in there."
"Those doors are weak, they'll never hold. Even with a belt around the knobs." Carl points out.
"Well it's a try. We can't just stand out here or let the rest of the group come back to this." Michonne says as she leads Morgan to the front doors. I follow and pull out my axe to kill the walkers surrounding it. Morgan and Michonne take care of the ones stabbed by the organ pipes surrounding the porch, while I take care of the stragglers.
I swing my axe at the walkers' heads and make contact with each one. Michonne and Morgan slam the doors close and tie it with a belt. Morgan's arm has gotten better, she doesn't have to wear the sling anymore.
The others kill the walkers coming from the back. Zainab stands back with Judith, who is being passed around like a hot potato.
All the walkers outside are dead, but the ones insode push against the loose door. I know that it's not going to hold much longer.
Zainab passes me Judith. She starts fussing and I don't blame her, I wouldn't want to be passed from person to person either. I place her on my hip so I have a free hand and she plays with my hair.
"What do we do now?" I ask Michonne.
"Wait for the group to come back. We can't let them come back to this." She shrugs.
"But we can't stay out here overnight." I argue.
She looks at the lowering sun. "If by the time the sun goes down and they aren't back, we'll head down the road to that car you guys had and stay there."
"Ok." I agree. Carl comes up next to me and ruffles Judith's hair.
"What's the plan?" He looks to Michonne.
"If by nightfall the group hasn't come back, then we go stay at that car they had." She points towards my group of friends and me.
He nods his head. "Hey Lauren, can I talk to Michonne real quick?"
I nod with a smile and walk past Father Gabriel who tried to speak to me. "I'm sorry about-" He began.
"Dont." I growl and walk right on past him towards my friends.
Dylan looks at the doors. "Those aren't going to hold much longer." He nods over to the belt that was beginning to slip off the handles.
"Well, hopefully we'll be out by the time it does." Austin says. He is sitting on the ground, throwing his knife into the dirt so that it sticks out of it. Zainab fiddles with her bow, adjusting the string.
The belt slides of and we all watch in horror as the Walkers move against the door, every time the door bounces back and little by little it opens just enough for walkers to get their hands through.
Michonne goes to run up there, but the fire truck runs down the porch and blocking the doors. The man with Red hair hops out of the truck along with Rosita and Eugene I believe his name is. Rick, Daryl, a woman I haven't seen before, the girl named Maggie, and Glenn, who i thought was Chinese but got all offended and told me was Korean, hopped out. Tyrese and another dark skinned kid got out of the truck , Sasha following behind them. Tara stayed near Glenn and Maggie.
Carl ran over to Rick and hugged him. Carl asked him something and his face dropped when Rick responded. Daryl stood there awkwardly with a sad look on his face.
I went up to him, curious to what happened. "How'd the rescue go?" I blurt out before I know what I just said. I mentally kick my self when he looks at the ground, saddened.
"She didn' make it." His shoulders drop. That's the most he's said to me.
"Oh. I'm sorry to bring it up." I quickly apologize.
Rick comes over and gently takes Judith from my arms. She giggles at the sight of Rick as he talks to her.
He smiles at me and gives me a quick hug. "Thanks for looking after her." He says to me.
"Well, we all did actually." I respond.
He just smiles and ruffles my hair like he would to Carl. He looks around at the group.
"Where's the runner?" Daryl asks just as Rick opened his mouth. Carl and I exchange looks and he does the talking.
"He, um...he turned this morning." I stare at the ground, not wanting to be reminded.
Rick got panicky. "Turned from what? Was he bit or did he just turn?"
"He got bit." Carl reassures him.
Rick's face floods with relief and then fills with sympathy. "I'm sorry to hear that. He was a good kid."
I just nod and grab Carl's hand. Abrham cleared his throat. "We better get this monkey party on the road." I will never understand that man's language.
"Where's the supplies and stuff?" Rick calls to Michonne. She just points at the church and shakes her head, her dreads hitting her in the face.
I then notice my shoulders were surprisingly light. I hit my palm to my forhead. "My backpack." I whisper in disbelief.
Carl turns to me. "What's wrong?" He asks confused by my sudden words.
"My backpack with all of my supplies is still in the church." I'm pretty bummed out that. How could I forget something as important as my backpack?
He rolls his eyes. "We barely got out of there alive, and you're worried about your backpack?"
I suddenly feel embarrassed for not having my priorities straightened out. "Well, I had a book in it that I really wanted you to read and it was a really nice backpack." I say in a small voice and kick at the rocks with the toe of my shoe.
Carl chuckles and I look at him with a confused look, but before I could respond Rick called to us.
"Carl! Lauren! Let's go!" He says as we notice everyone piling into two cars and the fire truck.
We run over there and have to be split up. He got in a van with Rick, Michonne, Judith, Tyrese, Sasha, Morgan, and Oscar. Glenn, Maggie, Abrham, Eugene, Father Gabriel, and Rosita got into the firetruck. The rest of us squeezed in a car with three row seating. I was in the way back with and Zainab and Dylan since we were the shortest ones, and yet again I was magically put in the middle for being the shortest if the three. Austin sat in the second row with Tara, the new kid and Kennedy. Daryl and the grey haired lady sat in the front.
We were off.
