Chapter 18
I'm shaken awake. "Hey sleepy head get up." Carl chuckles. I open my heavy eyes and blink a few times to adjust to the sun light flowing in from the small window behind the couch where Christian still sleeps.
"What time is it?" I ask.
"I'd say about 5 in the morning." He smiles at me as I groan.
I uncurl my self from the ball I slept in, my legs stiff. " What does Father Gabriel want us to do?"
He closes the door behind him. "He wants us to get more food." He puts a finger to his lips so we don't wake the others. We soundlessly open the front door and step outside onto the church's front porch and walk towards the tree we were sitting under yesterday.
"So, he's willing to let a bunch of teenagers go and search for food? Michonne too?"
"Not exactly." He grabs my hand and leads me towards the forest.
"Carl..." I know what he's planning, and I know we'll be in big trouble.
"We'll be back by 6:30 at most." He climbs a tree and throws down my backpack that was hidden in the tree with all my supplies.
"How..." I watch as he pulls his off the same branch and hops down. I sling my messenger bag over my shoulder.
"I grabbed it when I checked on you and Christian. By the way, you have weird conversations in your sleep." He smirks. I shove his shoulder and groan.
"At least I don't snore!" I shoot back at him.
His face turns red and he looks at the ground. "I don't snore."
"Right, totally. " I sarcastically say and roll my eyes. "I could hear you from a mile away, that's how we found you guys."
He chuckles and pushes me. "You're so stupid." He jokingly says.
We walk for about twenty minutes. I can only imagine what Morgan and Michonne will do when they realize we're missing. Morgan will probably threaten me with her sickle and Michonne will just yell at us. Yep, more afraid of Morgan.
"Where are we going?" I ask. As we emerge from the forest onto the road of a small town.
"We could raid a book store." He points to the Barnes & Noble store.
"Aw yea." I smile and nod.
"Race ya there!" He yells and starts running.
I pick up the the end of my messenger bag strap and chase after him. "No fair! I have a messenger bag!" I yell once I'm right behind him.
"Should've thought about that before!" He yells behind him. "We are in the apocalypse you know!"
He ends up beating me and stands there smirking as I scowl at him.
He comes up and hugs me. "No hard feelings."
Something moves by the cars in front of me. I push away from Carl and stare at the the group of cars in front of me.
"What? Are you that mad at me that I beat you?" He smiles.
"Shh." I put a finger up and grab my axe. There must be a person there, a Walker would create so much noise it wouldn't be funny.
Carl follows my gaze to the cars just as the figure moves again. He grabs his gun and we creep over behind a car, two cars from the figure.
Carl goes first and moves to the front of the car. I follow behind him as we crouch in the front. I peek under the next car and see feet under the one next to that.
I point to the next car and Carl nods. We make our way to the next car, but this is what the person would suspect. So I grab Carl's hand and pull him up and run to the side the person's on. I raise my axe and Carl points his gun.
"Woah woah woah!" The person shouts and I immediately lower my axe.
"Kennedy." I stare at the dark skinned boy.
"What's up?" He smiles and stands up.
"What's the big deal, man?" Carl asks, putting his gun in its holster.
Kennedy stands up. I let out an angry sigh as I realize he's taller than me. Hell, everyone's taller than me.
"I saw you guys go out and I decided to follow you." He shrugs.
I punch his arm. "About gave me a heart attack you did."
He rubs his arm. "Zombie behind you." He nods his head towards the cars behind us.
I turn around to see a Walker stuck behind an open car door. It claws at us through the broken window, but doesn't have the knowledge to figure out it could crawl under. I raise my axe and jump on the hood of the blue Element that the Walker was stuck in.I climb onto the roof and lay flat in my stomach. The walker tries to grab me with its decayed hands. I raise my axe and slam it into its head. It falls to the ground, taking my axe with it. I hop off the top and pull my axe out of its bloody skull.
"Was the climbing really necessary?" Kennedy asks.
I shrug. "Not really. But hey, why not."
"So how about that book store?" Carl grabs my hand and pulls me along.
"Oh man, I love being the third wheel again." Kennedy exclaims sarcastically.
"Should be used to it by now." Carl yells back at him, swinging our hands between us.
Kennedy catches up to us. "A book store aye? Why not food? Don't we need more?"
"Nah, we got plenty to last us a week until the rest get back off a run." Carl answers. I let go of his hand and open the wooden door to the store. It looks surprisingly untoutched by walkers and humans.
"Be careful when you walk down the isles for walkers." Carl warns us. If course he goes down the comic isle. Kennedy goes down the biography isle while I look in the fiction isle. I have to use my flashlight to see due to no power in the world anymore.
I know if we brought Zainab that that would be a big mistake. She would try to take all the books up in here.
I grab the third Harry Potter book, my favorite, and grab the fourth one for Zainab. I find a book about dragons for Morgan and come across a rack of backpacks. Ha, what a coincidence.
I hold my flashlight in one hand and shift through the different colored backpacks. Suddenly two hands cover my eyes and I yelp.
"Guess who?" I calm down once I recognize the voice as my boyfriend's.
"Spider-Man?" I joke.
"Close enough." He removes his hands and turns me around and kisses me on the lips.
I push back. "Help me find a backpack?" I give him puppy eyes.
"Fine." He gives in and shifts through the single rack of Jansport backpacks. "How 'bout this one?" He holds up a white one with blue smoke coming out of the right corner.
"I now have a new backpack." I smile and sit on the ground, emptying out my ripped messenger bag that I have had since the beginning. It was my older brothers but I stole it from him last minute when we were leaving our house.
Carl helps me put all my supplies into the new backpack. He picks up the Harry Potter books and examines them. "Really?" He holds them up.
"What? Haven't you read them before?" I ask.
"Nope, I like comics better than books." He places the books into my bag.
I shake my head and stand up. I pick up my bag and sling the straps into my shoulders. So many years with a messenger bag over one shoulder, I've forgotten what it was like to wear an actual back pack.
"Better?" Carl asks as I put my hand out for him to help him up.
"Much." I fidget with the straps, trying to loosen them.
"Here." Carl grabs the tab at the end and lowers the straps. My face gets all red out of embarrassment that I couldn't figure out freaking back pack straps.
"Thanks Sheriff. " I kiss his cheek and ruffles my oily hair. I grab my brush and pull it through the tangles.
"We should find Kennedy and start heading back." Carl looks around the store. I nod and follow Carl through the isles. We pass through the same isle I was in and I swiftly grab the first Harry Potter. Carl's gonna read it wether he likes it or not.
We find Kennedy in the comic book isle and I pick up a glittery diary that was laying on the ground. "Hey Kennedy, I found you a book." I say jokingly.
He turns around and grabs the book. He takes one look at it and throws it down and yells. As if the book was poisonous.
"Glitter is evil! It shall die! " he points to the diary.
Carl and I both give him the 'um what?' Look.
"I really hate glitter. It gets all over and it's messy and ugh! I am scared of glitter.
"Alrighty then." I turn around and look through the comics. I grab Spider-Man, Iron-Man, and Wonder Woman. My three favorite superheros. I grab The Flash for Christian and place them into my bag.
"So you're afriad of glitter?" Carl asks Kennedy.
"Yes, we already established this." Kennedy rolls his eyes.
"Oh yes." I say with an evil smile. "The pranks I could do." I feab Carl's hand and pull him to the front door, Kennedy follows behind. We really need to get back before anyone gets too worried.
We walk quickly back to the church and I sit under the tree with Carl and Kennedy and watch the sun rise. At least we have an excuse on why we're not inside.
