Chapter 14

I ran out of the woods and found a little town. I searched every car till I found a pair with the keys and a full tank of gas.

I drove back to the main road and back to the small house.

Austin and Morgan were outside, I didn't really catch what they were doing but they jumped up when they heard the car pull up. I hopped out the car and stood there.

Christian and Dylan are both gone.

"Lauren?" Morgan puts a hand on my shoulder. "Where's Christian and Dylan?" She said slowly. Austin came up behind her.

"Hey, where's Dylan and the runner boy?"

I looked up at them and opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. I tried again and still nothing.

"Spit it out!" Morgan shook my shoulders.

"They're gone." I whisper.

Morgan stifled a gasp and Austin took a step forward.

"Eatin?" He asks.

"Taken." I push past them and run into the house.

Zainab is standing in the kitchen and jumps when I bust through the door. "Oh my Lord, Lauren. Give me a heart attack why don't ya. How'd the-"

I didn't stop to chat, I ignored her and rushed to the bathroom. I know what I need to do.

I grabbed a backpack that is sitting by the door and fill it with supplies that I might need. I placed the first aid kit in there and then left the bathroom and started packing supplies that I had by my bed. Oscar came into the living room and so did the others.

"What the hell Lauren?" Oscar questioned.

"I'm going to go find them." I say and push past them to the door. Austin grabs me by the backpack handle and stops me.

"You can't leave." He blocks me from the door.

"Why not?" I cross my arms.

"Cause you'll get yourself killed!" He yells.

"Too bad!" I yell back and try to push him out of the way but he stands firm.

Zainab grabs my arm. "You're not leaving."

"Sorry mother, but I have to find them. Come with me or stay, I don't care."

She knows I'm not gonna listen. "Fine, I'll go. Only to save your butt and make sure you don't do anything stupid or heroic. "

"Woah, woah, woah. I can't let you go, Zainab." Oscar protests.

"Come with then, cause I sure as hell ain't gonna let her go alone. Knowing her stubbornness and all." Morgan stands by my side.

"Morgan?" Austin gives her the 'what the hell man?' Look.

"Please boys, don't be so overprotective. Those two are our friends and basically our family. If we don't look for them, then how bad do you think I would feel." I plead.

Both boys roll their eyes. "Fine." They both say.

A few minutes later and we all sit in the car with weapons and supplies. Zainab drives and since I'm the smallest, I sit in the middle of the back seat next to Austin and Morgan.

"Where do we look first?" Zainab asks.

"Try that Wal-Mart that we were at." I suggest.

"Then what?" Austin aks.

"I don't know, but that's where I lost them." I shrug.

We stop the car on the side of the road and walk to Wal-Mart, in case they're still there. It's getting dark out and I feel bad for dragging my friends out here.

We scout the outside for people but see none.

"They wouldn't be here without guards keeping watch, would they?" Oscar points out as soon as we group back together.

"I'm going inside," I take my axe out. "Cover me?" I ask Zainab and Austin. They both nod.

I open the doors again with the help of Oscar and shine my light around the store. I don't hear voices or anything. Why'd they leave a perfectly safe store? I shine my light a bit further and that's when I see the hoard of walkers, fifty at least. They all turn to look at us.

"Run!" I yell to the others and take out the few that come after us.

"Close the doors!" Zainab yells as I run out. We get the doors closed just as Walkers pile up against it. The glass cracks a little and we all back away.

"Uh, guys?" Austin calls back to us as he points to a group of cars and a fire truck. They're heading back the way we came. We run behind some cars so they can't see us.

"Let's follow them." Morgan says.
"A car would be too suspicious. " Oscar points out.

"Then we lack behind them." Zainab says and stands up just as the fire truck goes around the bend.

"Good that." I say and the others nod their head.

We make our way back to the white Mitsubishi and pile back in. This time Austin sits in the middle and I stare out the window.

I can hear the fire truck engine and know we are on the right path. We drive past the small house and continue down the road.

It takes another hour until we hear the engine of the truck turn off. We stop the car and decide to continue on foot.

"How do we do this? We can't just go in there and be like 'yo, we need our people back.' " I ask.

"We should bargain with them." Austin suggests.

"Give them our supplies?" Let's just say I can be very clueless at times.

"I guess so." Austin replies.

"We don't have nearly enough supplies." Oscar points out.

"We can fight." Morgan holds up her gun.

"Not enough amo." Oscar mumbles.

"We'll fight if we need to. But try to reason with them first." Zainab speaks up.

We all agree with her and cut through he forest to get to the small drive way the truck was in.
I can hear voices outside and see a small fire shine through the dark night. It looks like the building is an old church. Organ pipes make a dangerous ring around the front porch stairs.

We hide behind trees and wait to see if we can tell if these are the people who took Christian and Dylan.

Someone on the right of me moves and makes a twig snap, causing the rest of the group in front of us to go silent and grab their weapons.

I can see the glimmer of a long blade, almost like....like a katana. Could it be-?

A gunshot fills the air and pain goes to my right shoulder. I yell out in pain and fall to my knees. Blood covers my hand as I try to slow the bleeding in my shoulder. Someone runs over to me and pushes my head to the ground, causing my face to hit a root of a tree. They put the barrel of their gun to my head.

"Who are you?" The voice growls. I am shocked to hear that voice again. I hear Morgan cry out as someone grabs her broken arm again.

The person presses the gun to my head harder. "I said, who the hell are you? " they spit.

I go to speak and end up coughing and spit out some blood. "You wouldn't believe it." I say and feel the person's grip on the back of my head loosen and the gun being taken away from my head.

"Lauren." Carl says in a whisper.
