We Can Try

It was almost completely silent up at the lake, the only Person Dekka spotted outdoors was Edilio, perched on the edge of a plastic chair on the roof of the houseboat, two floors above her. She silently hoped he wouldn't see her, dispite the fact that somehow he reassured her.

Dekka knew about Edilios boyfriend, Roger who everyone called artfully Roger. Knowing she was a lesbian Edilio had told her before anyone else, even before Sam! She wasn't sure if he even knew now. She made a silent prayer she could sneek past unnoticed.

"Dekka," she heard a whisper. She turned up towards Edilio, guessing that it was him, but he was focused somewhere in the distance.

"Dekka!" She heard it again, more desperate this time followed by a sob. She turned around and there stood Brianna, all pretty even in the darkness of the night.

She had a tear streaking her face which seemed ghostly pale. Dekka wrapped her arms around her, hoping more than anything to muffle Brianna's sobs so Edilio wouldn't notice her. She didn't have long, it was her turn to keep watch in less than twenty minutes. She grabbed Briannas hand and led her down to her cabin.

The two girls lie down in bed together. Dekkas arms still around her sobbing friend.

"Nightmere?" Dekka asked; Brianna nodded. "What happened?"

"You were - and Drake - and he was holding you down and..." She let out a massive sob. Dekka heard footsteps, probably Edilio coming to see what was wrong.

"And he was whipping you - and then - and - and he - he gave me a knife and he t - told me to kill you, and..." She stuttered. Dekka wanted to cry along with her. The story made her chest throb, that Brianna had to see this, even in a dream. She knew if it was the other way round she'd be in hysterics, much less stable than Brianna.

"And he told me that if - if I didn't he would - wouldn't kill you just whip you until - until..." She burst in to another round of sobbing just as Dekka heard a knock on the door.

"Dekka?" Edilio called. "Is everything okay?"

"Fine. Brianna," she said knowing he would understand. Brianna had ended up sleeping with Dekka in her cabin many times due to nightmeres, and she knew she should be focused on supporting Brianna, but it hurt she couldn't make any advances on her. Couldn't kiss her to help drown away the sorrow. Couldn't tell her that she loved her, that she would always love her and that she always had.

"Remember your watch," he reminded her.

Once Edilio had gone Brianna spoke again, but nothing about the nightmere.

"Dekka, yesterday I was thinking about what you said a while ago, when you told me you had a crush on me. I know we agreed on sisters, but I can't help thinking this must be awkward for you, me sleeping here," she said.

Dekka had never thought about it as awkward, more often it brought a round of self pity and longing. Dekka thought it more likely awkward for Brianna.

"No," Dekka said under her breath "no, its not awkward to look after a sister,"

"Not even the slightest bit?" Brianna asked, her voice was cleared, she wasn't crying anymore. In fact it seemed as if she hadn't been crying at all.

"No, not even a little," Dekka answered flatly, hoping none of her longing seeped into her voice or her expression. She loved this girl so much and she couldn't even say it! It's not as if she talk about it with her friends ever, even if Sam knew she was a lesbian she couldn't actually talk to him about it. He was way to close to Brianna: he might say something, and even though she trusted him not to she didn't want to risk it.

"Because I've been thinking about it, and you knew how I said I didn't knew, and you know I was never really in love with Jack, well I've been thinking and - " Brianna said. Dekkas heart skipped a beat, was she going to criticize Dekka for what she was? Was she going to finally she her disgust. She did her best to hide her face.

"And I was thinking that he's not my type. And you know how I said I had a crush on Sam, well, I mean everyone does, but it was just because he's hot, you've got to admit that," she said. Dekka was never attracted to Sam, but she could see what other girls saw in him.

"And, as I said, I've been thinking and - well - " she didn't finish the question, she leaned in and kissed Dekka on the lips. Just a short touch, less than a second, but it send spirals of warmth through her and made butterfly's rage in her stomach.

"Do that again," Dekka instructed. Once again Brianna leaned in and pressed her lips to hers, longer this time, but still briefly.

"I thought that maybe we could try," Brianna finished at last. "what do you say?"

"You mean this? Your not just doing this because you feel bad?" She asked confirming what had just happened. She'd been so sure Brianna would express her disgust, discriminate her as everyone else always had, as her parents had. But then she thought realistically, she realized this was Brianna, and that she would never hurt her.

She presses her lips to hers, lengthening the kiss as long as she could, blocking out everything: the FAYZ, her parents, coats academy, Drake, Gaia, everything. All she felt was Brianna. Brianna was all she know.

A knock on the door interrupted her.

"Your watch Dekka," Edilio called to her. Dekka was so happy she couldn't face Edilio, she couldn't leave Brianna, not now.

Brianna reacted before she did. She swung herself of the bed and pulled Dekka up behind her, kissing her quickly on the cheek as if to remind her that it all had happened.

She shuffled past Edilio without the smile leaving her face and shot him a tell you later look.

Dekka led Brianna to the top deck and they sat on the ground beside each other, watching over the lake and all its residents.

"I think things will get better from here," Brianna said suddenly, her voice sounding like the crack of Drakes whip in the silence, but gentle at the same time.

"How come?" she asked.

"Because, things are staring to look up, if one thing can go right then other things can to. Right?" Brianna explained.

"Right," Dekka replied.

They were silent for a long while, just enjoying each others quiet company, which lasted until Astrid appeared next to them. Startled Dekka in to dropped Brianna's hand. Of did Brianna drop Dekkas hand. She didn't know.

"My watch," Astrid told them, taking the seat Edilio had taken before. "Why are you two so happy?" She asked, noticing both the girls looked overjoyed.

"Just gossip," Brianna answered before Dekka got the chance.

"Anything I can hear?" Astrid asked bored, although Dekka knew Astrid didn't care that much, she just kept track of everything that was happening in the lake side of the FAYZ.

"Not right now," Dekka answered. Astird turned away, without answering, to look over the gentle waves.

Brianna took Dekka's hand once again and they made their way back down to her cabin, for once, at peace.
