Chapter 9: The Soldiers

This has been in my drafts for the last half year or so, and it's soooooooo cringey to read, I want to make it better, but my writing haven't improved much since then 🙃
———————
Out of the bushes, guards in shiny, silver armour appeared.

Oh no!
They must have us, then again, we were pretty loud, probably should have checked our surroundings before doing anything-

"Young boy, you're coming with us, your chance of surviving if you don't come with us is slim" one soldier, guard or whatever he is said.

"Ha ha, no" he slipped his arms from their metal grasps and ran in front of me. "I'm staying here," then he looked at me, "with her".

In this kind of situation, I would be grateful that he would, I'm assuming, protect me.

But that was the old me.

The one before I got attacked days earlier by the palace guards.

But now, I had a taste of what they could do.

I felt the adrenaline rush through my veins when I saw them again. I'm not sure if it was fear, excitement, or a bit of both.

The soldier looked me in the eye with a mean look. Then he began to walk towards me while clinging on to his silver sword "I recognize you, you're the lil' brat that dared to hit the bureaucrat, and the fact that you're still living is a miracle!"

"That's right, I am the lil' brat who dared to challenge Mr. Smug-face, I mean the bureaucrat man. And guess what, I'm here, standing and breathing." As I spoke, more confidence flowed through me. I strunted up to the man who spoke before until I had to incline my head a bit to meet with his.

Either he's tall, or I'm just that short.

"And I'll do the same to you" I curled my fingers together so tight that I could my nails puncturing my skin. Then I retracted my arm back and let all of my might go into the punch.

He stumbled back with a bruised cheek, a bloody lip and an angry expression. Then his comrades started to double over with laughter at his misfortune. I stood there with a satisfied smile that he got what he deserved. Even Luc looked a bit happy.

But then the guard I had just punched came charging at me like a bull.

Shoot!

I quickly tried to think of a way to avoid being pummeled into a pulp. When he was just a few feet from me, I quickly jumped to the side, took advantage of his unstoppable momentum and stuck my foot out. Back at home, we would get to go to a bullfighting once a year to see competitors face off against the unbeatable Armor Horns. But recently, a competitor used his smarts and did the exact thing I did to Mr. Angry Armor, except he used a steel wagon to trip the bull, not his foot. If he did use his foot, well let's say he won't be walking for a long time.

When the angry armored guy fell down, his mates hooted with laughter so hard that they started rolling on the ground.
When the angry gut got up, his nose looked a little out of place and there were some bloody cuts all over his face.

Ouch-
That'll leave a mark.

His breathing was so hard and forced that even I could hear it clearly. "You're going to, going to, to, to-" he paused to even out his breathing pattern. "Your going die, and your going to die good"

"Really?" I didn't know that you would decide my fate?" I said this sarcastically while putting my hand over my heart to be more dramatic.

"Well, I do now." He said that before picking up his fallen sword and limping over to me.

"Come on!" I heard Luc's voice from behind and turned to see him beckoning me to follow him. Then I looked at Mr. Limping Legs slowly making his way to me.

What should I do?

Go after Limpy Mc. Limpster or, follow Luc and get out before his pals decide to attack us.

Hmmm . . .

If I take care of Mc. Limpster, then I might get captured by the rest of them. If I follow Luc, then we can get away, but they might try to follow us and get even angrier.

Ok, I'll go with Luc.

I turned my head towards Luc and ran towards him. When we got close enough, we latched hands to stay together.
Since he was in front, he basically pulled me. We ran between the trees and jumped over nearby shrubs.
The sound of metal clattering wasn't too far behind us which motivated us to run faster.
Yelling and screaming was also heard too.

We can't run forever! What are we going to do?!

The wind rustled between my ears, the smell of the evergreen trees filled the air, the pricklethorns scratched my already worn out pants, .

Somewhere in the run, our hands slipped and we lost each other. He kept racing ahead while I was left behind.

I saw his back getting farther and farther away.

Wow. What a nice person.

I decided to take a small break to catch my breath so I could go after him and murder him for what he did to me.

When I slowed my pace, I could no longer hear the clanging of metal, or the screams of war.

Phew, we must have outrun them.

Due to the threat no longer being here, I relaxed a bit more. I saw a nearby stump of a forgotten tree and sat, or tried to sit down. Ants and other insects had already moved and settled in. But I was still on my guard, my eyes started to look at my surroundings for any ambush that might happen. Even if the smallest leaf moved a centimeter, my eyes would be on the case and quickly dart in it's direction.

That's how careful I was.

I had already experienced someone close to me being taken away due to me being caught, or restrained to be honest. I'm not letting that happen again.

After my break, or really my three minutes of being jumpy at every movement, I started my run towards the area where Luc abandoned me.

It started out as a small jog at a steady pace, then it transitioned into a sprint like the Olympic runners at the stadium, of course, less impressive. I am only an ametuer.

Adrenaline began to rush in between my ears as I felt the rush of the wind.

Wow. This is actually pretty fun. I should do it more often.

This time while running, I paid more attention to my surroundings, looking for anything that might interest me.

As time went by, the sky began to darken and I was starting to feel a little hopeless.

What if I can't find Luc?
What if I can't find my way out of the forest?
What if I get lost?
Am I already lost?

My chest started to feel heavy with these questions burdening me. It became harder to breathe and my vision became blurry and discombobulated. My eyes attacked me with a sting like when my parents indirectly told me that Uncle Gus was taken away; sour like lemons drops. My legs started to turn into spaghetti strands as I stumbled around and didn't respond to my commands.

No, don't start crying!

I tried to tell myself, but it didn't work.

My eyes had become too painful to open, so I let the darkness surround me. My legs no longer had their feeling and I collapsed on the ground.

Small sniffs left my mouth as I curled up beside what I assumed was a tree stump due to it's rough edges and woodsy aroma.

I'm all alone.

The familiar sound of clanking metal filled the forest once more, but this time, I stayed put. There was no more reason to run from them, I had just been delaying what had to be done.

I slightly let light into my eyes to see them.

"Well, well, well. Look at who we found." he gave an evil laugh before I closed my eyes again.
