The Most Beautiful Moment In Life

I'm asking myself again,
am I happy right now?

"Wake up."

"Come on, wake up."

"How can you possibly sleep this much?"

"Chae."

"Wake up!"

Chaerin shrieked when a swift hand smacked her butt and shot up from the mattress so fast that she actually managed to flop off of it and land face-first on the living room floor. She groaned like a proper lady and spat out the strands of hair that had somehow ended up in her mouth. Yoongi held back the snort of laughter he felt coming on and grabbed Chaerin's hands, pulling her into a somewhat seated position.

"What the hell?" Chaerin slumped over and rubbed her tired eyes.

"Language," Yoongi scolded.

Chaerin peeled back one eyelid and glared up at him. "Okay dad."

"Shut the hell up," he grunted.

"Language," a sly smirk creeped onto Chaerin's lips as she mocked him.

Yoongi's eyes narrowed. "Please shut the hell up."

She grinned. "Much better."

Yoongi rolled his eyes and stood up from his crouched position on the floor. Chaerin was still slumped over on the ground, her legs splayed out like one of those old porcelain doll and her arms laying limp at her sides. She looked ridiculous and what made it even funnier is that she was always like this when she wasn't allowed to wake up in her own time. It was actually pretty funny in Yoongi's opinion.

"Alright, get up now, we've got a full schedule today," Yoongi clapped his hands and motioned for Chaerin to stand up.

"What are you talking about?" She murmured sleepily while rubbing her hands against her eyes. "I have work today."

"No you don't. I called the restaurant and got you the day off," Yoongi grinned wide, making his eyes crinkle and his cheeks squish. "You're stuck with me today."

"What? Why?" Chaerin was still half asleep and so everything Yoongi was saying was not processing properly in her brain.

"Are you serious right now?" He deadpanned and gave out an exaggerated sigh. "Chaerin what day is it today?"

She blinked once. "Monday?"

"Oh good god," his head dropped back in disbelief. "You can't possibly be serious."

"Yoongi just tell me what you're talking about," she whined.

He crouched down again in front of Chaerin and squished her cheeks between his hands. "Today is Monday."

"Yeah, I know," she managed to mumble out between her squished up cheeks and pursed lips.

"Monday, June 13th," he spoke as if it was obvious.

"So what?" She groaned.

"You can't possibly be this stupid."

"Hey! I'm not—"

"Chaerin it's your birthday."

She froze, her bleary eyes wide. "Oh."

Yoongi's eyes rolled in exasperation and released her face. "You really are not the sharpest crayon in the box."

"Shut up," she grumbled, now feeling a little embarrassed at the fact that she had somehow managed to forget her own birthday.

"Yeah yeah, now get up!"

Chaerin groaned and wobbled her way to standing on her own two legs, looking a lot like a newborn deer trying to stand for the first time. Yoongi couldn't help it, he laughed, earning himself an angry-kitten-like glare from Chaerin. No matter how many years they'd known each other, he couldn't help but find her awkward actions hilarious. She was clumsy and stubborn and not very graceful, but she was still the best thing in his life. He didn't want to take her for granted.

That's why he had planned today. Because it was Chaerin's birthday and after she had done so much for him, like giving him the studio and just putting up with him for so many years, Yoongi thought it was time that he do something nice for her. In his mind, there wasn't a person out there in the world that was better than Chaerin. So a couple weeks ago, when he remembered that her birthday was coming up, Yoongi had started planning.

"Get dressed fast."

"What are we doing?" Chaerin stumbled around the apartment, completely ignoring Yoongi's instructions.

"It's a surprise," Yoongi replied as he pulled on his shoes.

Chaerin groaned since she wasn't feeling awake enough for any sort of surprise. But after Yoongi gave her a glare and handed her a cup of coffee, she was ready to start the day. And soon enough they were out the door, Yoongi holding Chaerin's hand and dragging her to who knows where.

Chaerin would come to discover that Yoongi's surprise birthday plans were simple in nature: to have fun. He took Chaerin to the mall, where they ate ice cream and walked around and made fun of the ridiculous looking clothes that were being sold. They strolled through the city, taking a thousand silly pictures as if they were tourists for the day. And it all wound down to them eating take away on the banks of Han River as the sun crept lower and lower and lower in the sky.

Chaerin lay down her chop sticks and looked up at Yoongi, who had his eyes on the water. His face didn't give away any emotion, as per usual, so she couldn't tell if he was happy or sleepy or bored. It was some sort of skill, to be able to hide your emotions that well. Chaerin didn't know how he did it, but she had to admire it. Everyone had always told her that her own emotions were written out on her face as clear as the pages of a book. People didn't have any sort of trouble figuring out how she was feeling. But Yoongi didn't give anything away.

When they walked through the city people on the sidewalks had parted like the Red Sea when they saw Yoongi's stoic face in the crowd. Chaerin wondered if people were afraid of him, or maybe just weary of his blank expressions. It's possible that they were. People who didn't know him wouldn't know the complex microcosm of emotions and memories that he harbored behind that stolid mask. But looking at him, she didn't see an impassive man, she saw her friend.

"You know, I think some people might think you're cold," she spoke.

"I am cold," Yoongi replied instantaneously, not even taking his gaze off the river.

"No you're not."

Yoongi raised a skeptical eyebrow at her. He knew that strangers found him to be apathetic, but he wasn't sure why Chaerin was trying to argue over it. "And what makes you say that?"

"You may look cold, but really you're sweet," she argued, knowing it was the truth.

"Sweet?" He scoffed at the idea.

"Like sugar." Chaerin grinned so wide her eyes crinkled.

"You call me that one more time and you're not getting your present," he huffed in annoyance.

"What present?" Chaerin perked up and overlooked the "sweet my ass" comment that Yoongi mumbled out under his breath.

"It's your birthday," he sighed at her. "You seriously thought I wouldn't get you a present?"

"Well I don't know, I just thought that—"

"That we're too broke and that I would forget?"

"No. Uh well, I mean–I forgot."

"Well that's because that cute little head of yours doesn't have room for anything but dust and those cheesy dramas you watch." He smirked and poked Chaerin's forehead with one finger.

"Wow. Insulting me on my own birthday. You know, this is a new low." She acted as if the statement had truly offended her.

"Oh just shut up and take the thing." Yoongi yanked a small package from his jacket pocket and shoved it into her hands.

Chaerin stared at the neatly wrapped box for a moment. Presents were always a hit or miss kind of thing, but Yoongi's presents were her favorite. Like the game of Clue he'd gotten her, the Harry Potter wand, and the Big Bang album. He somehow always knew what to get her, and he made every birthday one worth remembering.

She eagerly ripped the wrapping paper off the little box, a smile already on her face. Chaerin yanked off the lid and froze. In that little brown box lay a tiny charm hanging from a thin chain. Her fingers gently gripped the silver triangle and lifted it from the box. The shiny surface glinted in the sunlight and she stared at it.

"Do you not like it? Or..."

"No! No! Yoongi I love it," she hurriedly spoke. "It's just...wasn't it expensive?"

He rolled his eyes. "Yeah. So what?"

Now it was Chaerin's turn to roll her eyes. "Yoongi—"

"Just shut up and say thank you."

He yanked the necklace out of her grip, walked around so he was standing behind her, and quickly clasped the chain around her neck. Chaerin glanced down at it, admiring the little silver charm that probably cost him too much. It really was beautiful. When her fingers wrapped around the tiny triangle, Chaerin noticed that the back of the charm wasn't just smooth silver. Carefully flipping it over, she discovered the words engraved into the silver.

You are my happiness.
You are my home.

A small smile quirked up the corner of Chaerin's lips. "Thanks Yoongi."

"Happy birthday, Chae."

"Sweet as sugar," she teased.

"Shut up."

Yoongi, still standing behind her, placed his arms around her shoulders and pulled her to his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder. He hugged her close and set his eyes on the horizon, watching the sun slowly sink into the water. In that moment, with his best friend in his arms and the sun setting on the river, for the first time in a long time, Yoongi was happy.
