Chapter 6
Ellie left the library at exactly 3:30pm, having happily helped Mrs. Frank to lock up. She loved coming to the library and sought tranquility. It was a place where no one worried about her, and made her disability a burden.
She was tired of people constantly looking out for her. Feeling almost like a heavy weight on her dad's shoulders, she resorted to coming to the library so he didn't break his head trying to help her at every step.
Ellie just wanted to be a normal girl, which most of the time she realised she couldn't be. Everytime people found out she was blind, they would suddenly get worked up and get cautious with every word they said to her. She laughed to herself when people stuttered in front of her, trying to look for words to not sound 'rude'. She occasionally thought, "People try not to be rude but it's even ruder when they're trying not to be."
She made her way toward the entrance of her medium sized house, by the help of her white cane. The slight breeze caressed her face and her black hair flew graciously in the wind . She searched for the latch to open the gate, found and opened it swiftly, for she knew it very well.
Latching it again behind her, she took her usual 8 steps to the front porch, which was coated in a matte layer of white paint. She moved her hand around her and found her usual pot plant that she touched everytime she entered.
She took a deep breath in of the smell of the freshly watered plants and opened the door to enter.
She was greeted by an outburst of energy.
"Ell! I'm getting you pizza today! How about that?" a disembodied voice shouted out.
"Sure Dad. Anything," she shouted back.
She heard footsteps coming closer to her and wasn't surprised to feel her father's soft hands on her cheeks. "I would've expected a bit more enthusiasm," and he kissed her on her forehead, "but it works. How was your day at the library?"
"Just like always, read some quality Braille, nothing more." She chose to keep the part of meeting Richard concealed, otherwise her dad would be all over her trying to get every single detail. Her mind played an audio imagination of her dad getting Richard's number and calling to arrange another meeting. He didn't want her to be alone. She chuckled on the inside.
"Ok! Good to hear. Get ready, we're going out to get pizza in an hour," her dad exclaimed, while walking back to the kitchen. She sighed, "I don't want to go out again Dad," while dragging herself to her room.
Her father, Davis McAllen, sighed as well. He didn't want Ellie to be cooped up in the house and not explore. He feared that if he might die, Ellie would not have anyone to guide her and hold her hand.
He was scared of it all the time, to the point where he began to fear the word fear itself. Davis needed to be strong for his child. Ellie meant the world to him, his baby. He tried everything to make her happy, even if sometimes he overwhelmed her or made Ellie feel like it was overbearing.
All he ever did was love her. Hoped for her to be joyous, despite her inability to see.
He called back, "Okay El. Stay at home. I'll go then, in a while." Ellie forced a smile, she knew her Dad wanted her to see the world and understand her surroundings. She wanted to, but she also just wanted to stay plastered to her room or the library. Revel in imagination, bounce on the make-believe clouds, fill her life with music: her idea of a good life. But she knew after all it was life, nothing extraordinary.
She walked smoothly and gracefully across the room, knowing where everything was. Grabbing a towel, she glided to the bathroom.
After that, she was about to change into her black and white striped pyjamas. It was winter, and she felt it to see if her dad had given her one with sleeves before putting it on. He occasionally left her clothes to change into, it helped out.
She walked down the passage to the living room and found the speaker with much ease. Pressing the button to turn it on, she called out for her Dad. Davis was still there, he didn't leave as yet. He walked into the living room and asked, "What's wrong?"
Ellie laughed, "Nothing, just called you for no reason." Davis shook his head, he laughed too, knowing his child was crazy like him.
A song started playing on the speaker. It was their favourite. Ellie raised a hand and walked a little toward him.
"My lord?" she bowed. She wasn't afraid to bow in front of her dad, or be the first to ask for a dance. She saw God in her dad and made it known to him by being the one to invite him to dance. Davis chuckled and took her hand. "Milady," he said while bowing in approval.
They clasped hands and started to dance. Singing along to the voice from the speaker, they enjoyed their little moment.
"Fly me to the moon,
Let me play among the stars,
Let me see what spring is like,
On Jupiter and Mars,
In other words,
Hold my hand,
In other words,
Baby, kiss me.
Fill my heart with song
And let me think forever more,
You are all I long for,
All I worship and adore,
In other words,
Please be true,
In other words,
I love you."
