Summer Week 4
"The best gift in life is a second chance." ~Unknown
The shop was dead.
Stood behind the counter, I secretly played Candy Crush whilst David wasn't looking. He was sat on his chair by the window that he called his 'watching chair'.
Time was moving slowly. I'd been here since ten in the morning and wouldn't finish until four. Sometimes, the boredom would become so bad that I'd actually talk to David. I can't say he's the best person to have a conversation with.
It was at half three exactly when I got a text message.
Romain P
I heard you got a job at the shop. I'll pick you up at four at the edge of the village.
I looked up to check that David wasn't looking. Despite sitting in a 'watching chair' as he called it, he wasn't doing a very good job at keeping watch.
Where will you take me?
Get in and find out.
What if I don't want to?
Enjoying Dave's company too much?
Who's to say I'd enjoy yours anymore?
It takes two to tango. The marks on my back are proof of that, Kate.
My breath caught in my throat. Embarrassingly, my thumbs stumbled over the keys as I typed back.
You're an ass
An ass who's name you screamed...
I blushed so brightly I was afraid it would reflect in the window and David would see.
Goodbye Romain
See you soon, Kate. Don't be late.
••
"-just Maddy and I, mum." I said over the phone. "No, not the night. I'll be home later. She wanted to show off her new car is all. Yes, we'll be safe. Okay, I love you too-"
Romain pulled up on a junky looking motorbike that I'd never seen before. Hanging up the phone, I approached the bike hesitantly.
"You can't be serious." I said, folding my arms, suddenly cold despite it being early August.
Romain did not wear a helmet. His dark curls had grown even longer since the last time I'd seen him. He flipped them back to reveal blue eyes filled with mischief. "Unless you'd like to walk, I'd suggest getting on."
We'd talked once since the festival. Bethany and I had been shopping when we 'bumped' into Romain and Mitch. Bethany, poor thing, was convinced Mitch was tracking her.
Long story short, whilst Mitch had been ogling over an uninterested Bethany, Romain and I talked like we had before prom. We joked, he made too many innuendos and I corrected him as usual. It all felt...normal.
It crossed my mind- not for the first time -that ever since Romain stole my pencil in Graphics all those months ago, I'd been taking a lot of risks. Sneaking him into my house, running off and getting wasted at a festival over a weekend, lying to my parents constantly...
I felt alive. Whether that was a sin or not, Romain was the streak of danger in my life that sped up my heart rate and kept me going.
So, without another word, I swung my leg over the bike and wrapped my arms around his waist.
"Well?" I said, resting my cheek against his back. He smelt of laundry detergent and smoke. I couldn't get enough of it.
"One more thing." He said, twisting around. Without another word, he pulled my hair out of its ponytail, letting it fall in a cascade of blonde waves.
With that, Romain revved the engine and we were off.
My grampa had a motorbike when I was little. Every Christmas, when we'd go down to visit, he'd take me out on a slow drive down the cul de sac.
This, however, was much different.
It was only Romain's warmth and strong body that kept me from freaking out. He was going extremely fast, however something told me it was no where near his usual speed.
"You good?" He yelled into the rushing wind as we sped out of the tiny village of WinterTree.
Not finding the words, I instead kissed his neck as an answer. At that, Romain turned up the speed. This time, it didn't bother me. This time, I closed my eyes and put my trust in him completely.
••
The ocean was beautiful at this time of day.
As the sun set, Romain parked the Bike and helped me off. His hair was crazy from the ride, mine most likely worse. He was breathing deeply, his cheeks rosy as he said, "I haven't worn you out already, have I?"
I hit him playfully, my focus mainly on the crashing blue waves. The beach wasn't far from our village, yet I never seemed to go. It was a shame, really.
"Why are we here, Romain?" I asked, suddenly feeling nervous.
"Romantic walk on the beach?" He teased and I rolled my eyes. "Well, what would you like to do?"
The beach was practically empty. We were at a part that was more secluded and only dog walkers visited, really.
"You seriously brought us out here with no plan?" I said, shaking my head. "Typical Romain."
Romain grinned. "I wouldn't say I don't have any plans..."
Ignoring that comment, I slowly made my way down the grassy hill, in the process taking off my shoes, until I reached sand. It felt amazing between my toes. I suddenly felt like a kid again and couldn't help but giggle.
Romain wasn't far behind. Pulling his shirt and trousers off, he ran into the water in just his boxers. I couldn't help but gasp. It was summer, yes. But it was also England. Surely it would be freezing-
Romain popped his head over the water, flicking his damp hair out of his eyes. "Come on, Kate. I'll warm you up!"
I shook my head stubbornly. "No, you go ahead. I'd rather not die of hyperthermia."
Romain gave me a funny look before walking out of the water. "You're right."
I frowned. "I'm right? That's new."
He approached closer and I found myself staring at his toned chest dripping with sea water. No doubt he visited the gym daily to get such a body.
Seconds later, Romain was wrapping an arm around my waist as he crushed me against him in a world shattering kiss.
I lifted my hands and tangled them in his wet hair, loving the silkiness. He was warm and comforting in the closing in night.
Romain was the first to pull away, tracing his thumb over my bottom lip as my eyes fluttered closed from the sensation.
So silently I barley heard, Romain said, "You have a five second start to get away before I throw you in."
I startled back. He couldn't be serious-
He most certainly was.
Heart thrumming in my chest, I turned and bolted across the beach. The wind ripped at my hair and clothes, making me feel like a bird in full flight.
Romain was closing in fast. There was no way I was getting away. So, without looking back, I pulled off my shirt, revealing my simple white bra (all the while still running). My shorts were next, nearly causing me to fall over as I pulled them off to expose my matching white underwear.
Ready, I jumped into the water holding my nose. It was cold, extremely cold. I didn't feel it for long, however, as not a moment later I was enveloped by strong arms and pulled into a warm chest.
I let my hands travel down his chest, getting a feel of the boy making love to me.
I welcomed the memory, pushing my damp hair out of my face to see bright blue eyes. This close, I was able to see a circle of gold around the pupil. It was a beautiful discovery.
"What is this, Romain?" I felt I had to ask. Even if the answer was not one I wanted, I needed to know.
The water was waist deep on him. He didn't even seem to be bothered by the cold as he said intensely, "I want you, Catherine. I've never wanted anything so badly."
My breathing hitched.
"You asked me why I brought you here," he continued, tracing circles with his thumbs on my back. "Though that night at the festival was amazing and I have no regrets, I wish you're first time had been more special. Je veux le rendre spécial."
I want to make it special.
I had never felt this before. It was a feeling of warmth that stemmed from my heart and spread to the whole of my body, creating a tingling sensation that I couldn't shake.
I wanted him. It was a different kind of want than before prom. Then we had been innocent. Then, the only taste we'd gotten was a kiss.
"Let's start again." I breathed out. "T-take me."
I was shaking, not from fear, but anticipation. Without a response, Romain lifted me bridal style out of the water. His steps were not hurried, in fact it I was pretty sure he was taking his time on purpose.
I didn't want this moment to end either
The beach had grassy hills instead of a wall to separate the sand from the road. Thankfully, this area had nothing but hills and a rarely used road, meaning no one was around.
Romain laid me down between the hills and a section of climbable rocks. Pushing away the damp hair from my face, he brushed a kiss to my temple, travelling down to my cheek before finally reaching my lips.
This time was better. This time we didn't have alcohol swaying our decisions. This time, it felt right.
So, that night, on August 12th, Romain Porte made me feel special in all the was possible.
Authors note:
If people find this story cliche, I'm trying my hardest to make it not. There are mistakes, of course, of which I am going back to fix. The story is fast moving and that is because if it went any slower, it would be hundreds of chapters long. This isn't just one story, it's multiple.
