Two weeks later|30th October
"Qui craint de souffrir, il souffre déjà de ce qu'il craint." ~La Fontaine
I was going to meet the Porte family.
It had been two weeks now since I had revealed to Romain how I was pregnant. He'd handled the situation surprisingly well, however was adamant to remind me that we couldn't keep the secret for much longer.
The bump seemed to be growing by the day. I had now reached my second trimester (as I had searched on the internet) and my first initial sickness had subsided thankfully.
It had been the last day of school before half term that Romain approached me in the canteen. Maddy had thankfully started acting her normal self again. She'd been sad for so long that I'd been beginning to wonder if there was more going on that I didn't know about. I'd been so caught up in the current baby situation that I never had a chance to ask her.
The two of us were in the lunch line, Tilly no where to be found and Bethany still at home, when Romain walked into the canteen rather dramatically.
I immediately spotted the cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
"What is he doing?" Maddy hissed, ignoring the dinner lady as she asked whether she wanted curry or chilli.
A knot formed in my stomach. What was he doing?
I noticed Penelope's little gang had snapped their heads up. I felt the knot tighten when I heard them playfully asking Romain to give them a drag.
Thankfully, Romain ignored them. Again, for the past few weeks now, Romain had been pale and sickly looking. I'd tried to ask him to go to the doctors, but every time I did he'd snap that he was 'fine' and that I was being 'ridiculous'. He'd then feel bad and begin to kiss me. My head would spin from his mixed emotions.
Today I was wearing black tights, a burgundy skirt and a oversized black jumper. Yet, Romain was able to look right through the fabrics, as if to remind himself that I was still pregnant.
Just as I had assumed he would, Romain made his way towards where Maddy and I stood. Despite Romain being my boyfriend, the father of my child, I cringed away slightly. Clearly, he wasn't in the right state of mind.
"Can I speak to you?" Was his introduction, acting as if he'd no clue every person in the canteen was currently watching us.
I nodded, not missing the dirty look Penelope threw my way. I don't know what she was mad about, her and Tony got back together when school started.
I made fists into my jumper as I followed Romain out of the canteen. I was waiting for a teacher to come and yell at us. "Can't you get rid of that thing? It stinks."
It was as if Romain only just realised he was still holding the lit cigarette. "Oh right, sorry."
"Are you okay, Romain?" I asked. We were walking through the school grounds, him a foot ahead of me as if he didn't want to walk with me. "What is this about?"
"I fucked up."
That knot in my stomach tightened so hard I gasped. "What did you do?" When he didn't answer, I stopped him and pushed his shoulder to turn him around. "What did you do Romain?"
Romain looked sicker than ever. The paleness of his skin had a green tint to it, his eyes surrounded by dark purple smudges.
"I told my mum."
My ears began to ring. Romain had told his mother about the baby. His mother, whose GP was my mother. I couldn't breathe.
"She wants to meet you." Romain continued, sounding sick. "All she knows is that you're name is Catherine."
"Does she know who I am?" I demanded. "Have you forgotten that she knows my mum?"
Romain dropped his cigarette and crushed it with his foot. "No. I think she was too mad to even put two and two together."
I felt sick myself. "We'd promised one another we'd do this together, Romain. How did you even tell her?"
"Unlike some, I can't lie to my parents." Romain snapped.
I stepped back, stunned by his words. Romain shook his head and took a deep breath, saying what he always said, "That was unfair. I'm sorry."
This time, I didn't let him kiss me. Instead, I folded my arms and said in a cold tone, "When do I meet her?"
Romain scratched the back of his head. "Sometime in the holiday. She's still trying to process everything."
"Well, when you know let me know." I said. "Don't talk to me until."

October Half Term|Day Three
"You're always one decision away from a totally different life." ~Unknown
I wore the nicest clothes I had. This consisted of a dark blue knee length dress that showed the bump off far too much. For this reason, I threw over a baggy grey cardigan, my heart racing.
"And Maddy's parents are okay with you tagging along on their family meal?" Mum had asked when I'd walked downstairs that evening.
"Yeah." I lied. Truthfully, Maddy and I had barley talked. I knew it was because of the secret I held against her, even if she had no idea about it.
Mum frowned with a shrug, turning back to the tv. Thankfully, dad was on a late shift so he couldn't question me further. "She'll be picking me up soon, I should wait outside. Love you."
"Be kind!" Was what she yelled back just before I shut the door. Running across the lawn, I threw open the Porte car door and hopped inside.
Romain was out of the drive before my mum could ever know he was there. I let out a deep breath, pulling down the sun cover and checking how I looked in the mirror.
"You're glowing."
"Not funny."
Romain laughed.
I looked out of the window, arms unconsciously wrapped around my bump, protecting it. I had kept true to my word by not speaking to Romain until he gave me the date and time the night before. It had given me a few days of thinking time, which had been much needed, I had soon found out.
Romain was dressed in clothes only slightly less formal than his prom tux. Designer brands printed him, the thick cream sweater he wore making his eyes insanely blue. I had felt a...need over the last few days. I need to repeat what had gotten us into this mess in the first place.
It irritated me to no end. Especially as I'd made a mental note of how stupid that made me.
I looked over, startled to find Romain's eyes on me and not the road. I could see the hidden thoughts behind those glittering eyes, twin to my own.
I shifted in my seat, pulling my hair back, suddenly feeling flushed. Romain watched the movement. I just ignored him.
My thoughts returned to tonight; the sheer terror I felt knowing I was about to face the woman that could change it all. Would she be cruel enough to tell my mother? Would the night conclude with me on my knees, begging that she didn't?
I guess we'd just have to find out.
