The Blessing

Ulma sighed in relief as she stood on the beach and adjusted her backpack. She glanced one last time at the Isle, a knot forming in her stomach.

Leaving her grandparents behind had been more difficult than she had thought. Ulma's mind wandered to all the family days at school and all the birthday parties she had attended where her friends' grandparents had been present and hers had not.

It wasn't fair. She knew they were serving time for doing terrible things, but the people she had met were not the monsters the stories portrayed.

They were people, alone and trapped on an island with limited communication to the only bit of family they have.

Then there was Hayden. Ulma felt the knot in her stomach tighten as his face appeared in her mind. He had grown up the only child on an island full of of villians. No one even knowing that he exists, not even his own brother.

Hayden didn't deserve to be there either. He deserved the chance her parents and their friends got so long ago. She had seen the fear in his eyes when he begged her not to tell anyone about him. Ulma couldn't imagine what his father had done to make him so afraid. Then again, his dad was the god of the underworld. That's scary enough on it's own.

Ulma was snapped from her thoughts when she felt a hand on her shoulder and a voice speak out.

"Took you long enough."

She turned around and found herself face to face with Connor. "What are you doing here?"

"Waiting for you." He smiled. "I couldn't sleep last night knowing you were over there."

Ulma rolled her eyes as she started heading for the limo. "You worry too much. Everything went fine. Grandma even came up with an idea to help me get my amulet to complete the sweet sixteen tradition."

"Really? That's great! Now you just need to convince your mom-"

"No way!" She snapped, turning to face him. "I'm doing this on my own. We both know my mother would never let me go."

Connor sighed as he opened the door to the limo. This girl was too stubborn for her own good.

"You'll never know until you ask her." He reasoned.

"Oh I know her answer." Ulma scoffed. "The tradition is lost. We'll never complete it and it's too dangerous to try."

"I hear you." Connor acknowledged, climbing in the driver's seat. "But going behind her back is just going to make things worse when she does find out."

Ulma shrugged. "Then I just won't let her find out."

"But Ulma....you can't....Aarrgghh! You know what, fine, do your own thing. But when it comes back to bite you, I will say I told you so." Connor retorted.

"Oh trust me," Ulma smirked. "I won't give you the opportunity."

Uma sighed as the circle on her computer screen swirled around and around. She had been trying to reach Harry on his ship for thirty minutes, but so far no one had answered.

She reached for the lid of her laptop, preparing to slam it closed, when the screen blinked. The screen became blue before the picture came into focus and a familiar face appeared.

"Hello love."

Uma's smile grew as relief washed over her. "Harry, finally."

He chuckled as he straighted the collar of his uniform. "Ye miss me that much, aye love?"

"You know I miss you kelp brain." Uma chuckled.

Harry grinned at her response. "Kelp brain? Haven't heard that one since we were wee pirates. So what's goin' on love? Ye don't normally call me during deployment, I normally call you."

She sighed, playing with a strand of her hair. "It's Ulma. We've been fighting alot and I just don't know what to do."

"Well for starters, what are ye fighting over?" He asked.

She groaned and placed her hands over her face before slowly sliding them away. "Ulma wants to know more about her cecaelian roots and about my mom. I told her I would tell her when she's older but she just blew up on me."

"Well," Harry began. "She's almost 16. Maybe it is time she learned more about her family."

"It's too dangerous Harry! She wants to look for the Cave of Talents to complete the Sweet 16 Tradition. She wants to talk to my mother! I can't put her in danger!" Uma ranted.

Harry took a deep breath. "Love, ye can't protect her forever. I know yer scared, but you need to start opening up. She deserves to know. It won't hurt to tell her what you know."

"That's the problem Harry!" Uma snapped. Her eyes widened at the outburst as she quickly calmed her voice. "I don't know anything. I spent my life on the Isle with my mother running a restaurant. She taught me how to make a few potions that would never work on the Isle. My mother is the only one who can give her answers and I can't allow them to talk! You remember what happened last time, it's too soon!"

"For her or for you?" He asked gently. "Uma, I know ye want to protect our children but they also need to know where they came from. Eventually, ye will have to speak to yer mother."

"But Harry-"

Captain Hook please report to the upper deck for debriefing.

"Captain Hook?" Uma chuckled.

"Yeah, yeah don't remind me." Harry sighed. "Well I'm sorry love, I have to go. Just two more weeks."

"Harry wait! Please don't go!" Uma pleaded.

"I love you Uma." He replied softly. "We'll figure things out when I get home."

"Harry please I-"

Uma's words were cut off by the screen going black. She shut the laptop and sighed, running a hand through her hair. She needed Harry's help to figure out what to do and he was gone.

Uma slowly got up and headed to the kitchen to make some tea when she heard a knock at the door.

"Who could that be?" She asked out loud as she made her way over to answer it. Uma opened the door and was surprised to find an old friend on the other side.

"What's up Captain Octopus? Miss me?"

Uma sighed and gave a small smile as she placed a hand on her hip. "That old nickname? Really Hadie?"

The blue haired young man laughed as he pulled her in for a hug. "It's good to see you Uma."

"It's good to see you too, Hadie." Uma replied as she pulled away. "Hard to believe it's been almost two months since we last saw each other."

"I know, time flies here in Auradon. That's why I thought we should catch you up on what you've missed." Hadie moved to the side as Uma looked at him in confusion. However, confusion turned to surprise when she saw what he had been hiding behind him.

"Ginny! Oh my goodness!" Uma released a small gasp as she took notice of the small bundle in Ginny's arms. "You had the baby!"

Ginny smiled as she stepped forward, allowing Uma to peer inside the pink blanket. "We'd like you to meet our daughter, Hayley McKenna Underworld."

"She's beautiful." Uma smiled, admiring the tiny infant. She had bright blue eyes like Hadie and dark brown hair like Ginny, but looking closer she could see the tips were lightly frosted blue.

"Thank you." Ginny smiled. "As excited as I was to finally be pregnant, I'm glad she's finally out."

"I hear that." Uma chuckled. "Well come inside and make yourself at home. Ulma should be home soon and the boys are at the park with their friends so I doubt they'll be home before dinner."

The group made their way into the living room. The girls settled down on the couch as Hadie sat in a nearby chair. "Hey I want to ask, how's Gil doing? I haven't seen him around the castle recently during my visits. Is he taking care of Quinn?"

Uma's face fell as she pushed a piece of hair behind her ear.  "Quinn lost the baby the week after Thanksgiving. Ben gave Gil the last three months off so he and Quinn could have time to mourn."

A tear ran down Ginny's cheek, her hand flying to her mouth in shock as Hadie ran hand through his hair, shaking his head in disbelief. "Oh gods, I can't imagine what they've been going through. Why didn't he say anything at Christmas? He could have at least called me, I would have been there to support them."

"I know you would have." Uma smiled sadly. "But this is their sixth miscarriage. Gil and Quinn didn't want anyone fussing over them so they only told family and a few close friends. They wanted to mourn privately."

Ginny nodded. "I think they deserve that. They've been trying for so long, I can't imagine how much it broke their hearts to lose this baby."

"And they really thought this one was going to make it too. Quinn made it four months this time." Hadie added. "They want to be parents so bad. Gil treats everyone's kids like his own, he'd be an amazing dad."

"He would." Uma agreed. "And Quinn would be a wonderful mother. They both have such big hearts."

"Maybe I can talk with my cousin Eileithyia and my Aunt Aphrodite." Hadie suggested. "EIleithyia is the goddess of childbirth and Aphrodite is worshipped for her influences on procreation. Maybe they can send them a blessing or something to help? It might help to speak with Aunt Hera as well."

"Maybe. If you think it's worth a try." Uma replied. "I just hate seeing them so heartbroken."

Hadie nodded, clearing his throat as he glanced around the room. "So where's Ol' Hooky?"I thought he would have greeted us by now."

Uma sighed as she met his gaze. "Still deployed for another two weeks."

"Oh Uma, I'm so sorry." Ginny replied. "We thought he would be home already. Harry's already missed Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and I guess now..."

"Ulma's sixteenth birthday." She finished. "I know. Being in the Navy means everything to Harry but it hurts not having him here."

Hadie nodded solemnly. "I warned him that joining the Navy would mean sacrificing time with his family, but he was determined to be a sailor. Uma if you need anything, we can gladly help out."

"I couldn't ask you to do that. You have Hayley now." Uma replied, shaking her head. "I can take care of things around here, I always have."

"Have you planned Ulma's birthday party yet?" Ginny cut in.

Uma's eyes widened and she groaned in disbelief. "No, I've been so busy I haven't even started."

"The let's plan a party!" Hadie grinned. "Uncle Zeus gave me two months off from my representative duties for Olympus to help with Hayley and Ginny has a 6 month maternity leave from Evie's Four Hearts. We can crash here for the week and help out, if that's okay?"

"Are you sure?" She asked hesitantly. "Your going to be up all night with the baby. Are you sure you'll have the energy to plan a party."

"We will if we all work together." Ginny smiled. "You and Harry have always been there for us, it's our turn to be there for you."

"Thank you, both of you." Uma smiled.

Ulma sighed as the limo pulled up in front of her house. "I guess I have to go in, don't I?"

"Yup." Connor nodded, unlocking the door. "I'll see you at school, okay?"

Ulma nodded before exiting the car. "Of course, see you tomorrow."

She watched as Connor drove away, waiting for the limo to disappear before walking up to the house. Ulma made her way inside and was surprised to hear multiple voices inside. Curious, she followed the voices to the living room.

She turned the corner and felt a smile tug at her lips when she saw who it was. "Uncle Hadie!"

"What's up Octo-pie?!" He greeted, getting up to pull her into a hug. "I think you've grown again since Christmas."

Ulma laughed as she pulled out of the embrace. "I think it's just the boots. So what are you doing here?"

He opened his mouth to reply but was cut off by a small cry. Ulma turned and realized her Aunt Ginny was sitting in the couch rocking a small bundle in her arms.

"You had the baby!" Ulma squealed, rushing over to peer inside the blanket. "Awwww!"

"This is our daughter Hayley." Ginny smiled. "Would you like to hold her Ulma?"

A wide grin grew on her face. "Can I?"

Ginny nodded, carefully placing the baby in her waiting arms. Ulma cradled Hayley gently to her chest as she cooed contently.

However, her smile fell slightly when they baby revealed her bright blue eyes. The same bright blue that Hayley shared with not only with Hadie, her father, but Hayden.

She couldn't help but feel that Hayden should be here. This was his niece after all. She was snapped from her thoughts when a hand came to rest on her shoulder.

Ulma looked up and noticed her Aunt Ginny giving her a concerned look. "Is everything alright dear?"

She nodded in response as she played with Hayley's fingers. "Yeah I'm okay, her eyes just reminded me of something that's all."

"Reminded you of what?" Uma asked her daughter curiously.

Ulma panicked. She couldn't tell anyone about Hayden or her trip to the Isle. She stuttered as she quickly formed a response. "Of....of a dream I had last night."

"What kind of dream did you have Octo-pie? You seem really bummed out." Hadie noted.

"It's hard to explain." Ulma began. "I was in a strange place and there was a boy with blue eyes, like Hayley's."

Uma, Ginny, and Hadie all exchanged curious glances. "Did this boy say or do anything?" Uma asked.

Ulma kept her eyes focused on the baby as she spoke. "He said I couldn't tell anyone that I saw him, that his existence was a secret. Then he told me something that didn't make sense."

"Ulma, what did he say?" Uma inquired, growing more curious.

"He said that I had been blessed by Poseidon." Ulma admitted, meeting her mother's gaze. "Is that true?"

Uma immediately shook her head. "I'm pretty sure I'd know if you were blessed by a god. I think you just had one crazy dream."

"Actually...." Hadie chuckled nervously, scratching the back of his head. "Your daughter was blessed Uma. The night she was born."

"What!?" Uma screeched, causing Hayley to cry. "Why didn't I know about this!?"

"Uma calm down, you're scaring my daughter." Hadie began. "Gods choose people they believe are worthy to bestow gifts upon. Poseidon sensed Ulma had strong magic already and after consulting with the Fates, learned she would face a great battle. He blessed her because he knew she would eventually need that extra power later in life to help protect the people of Auradon and herself."

"So Grandma's prophecy is real?" Ulma asked, hesitantly.

Hadie nodded. "The prophecy is very real. The Oracle of Delphi predicted it as well. The gods and the royal family are the only ones that know about this. We don't want to start a panic."

"But why didn't anyone tell me!?" Uma snapped. "This is my daughter we are talking about, she can't fight in a battle! There has to be another way!"

"You can't fight a prophecy Uma." Hadie sighed. "They always come through, we just have to be ready when the time comes."

Uma was quiet as she took in the information before turning to her daughter. "Did the boy say anything else?"

Ulma shook her head. "He said his name was Hayden, that's it. That's the only other thing he told me before I woke up."

The three adults all turned to stare at each other. "I don't know anyone by that name? How about you?" Uma asked.

Hadie and Ginny both shook their heads. "We don't know anyone by that name."

Ulma's heart sank. She'd hope that maybe there would be a hint of recognition but their faces were blank. Hayden was right all along, they didn't know he existed.

"Maybe I just created him in my mind to go along with the voice in my head telling me this stuff." Ulma reasoned.

"Maybe," Hadie replied uncertainly, "but somebody had to be speaking to you. You couldn't have just miraculously dreamed this information. Someone had to plant it in your mind."

"Could it have been one of the gods or goddesses?" Uma questioned.

Hadie shrugged. "Its possible but I don't know for sure. I'll send a message to Olympus and see if they know anything, okay?"

Uma nodded in but worry still swirled in her eyes. Ulma knew her mom wasn't satisfied with the answers she had been given.

"Well," Ginny cut in, breaking the silence as she scooped up Hayley from Ulma's arms. "Why don't we go fix dinner? I think everyone is probably getting hungry. I'll meet you in the kitchen as soon as I feed this little lady."

Uma and Hadie nodded as they began heading for the kitchen while Ulma grabbed her backpack from the doorway and started heading upstairs.

"Aren't you going to help?" Hadie asked.

Ulma nodded. "I'll be right there Uncle Hadie, I just need to put my stuff away."

He nodded, ducking back into the kitchen as Ulma headed for her room. She pulled out her phone and laid back on the bed as she punched in the code her grandpa had given her for the Isle Chat System.

The circle on the screen swirled for a moment before her Grandpa appeared on screen.

"Hi Grandpa!" Ulma greeted.

Captain Hook grinned. "Ye made it home safely I presume?"

"I did." Ulma smiled sadly. "I miss you already.

"I miss you too lass." He replied. "But I'm thankful for the bit of time we got to spend together."

Ulma nodded. "Me too. Grandpa, I have to go help with dinner, I call you soon okay?"

Captain Hook nodded. "I look forward to it. Goodbye lass, I love ye."

"I love you to Grandpa." Ulma smiled as the screen went black.

She sat up and rummaged through her backpack before pulling out the jewelry box Grandpa James had made for her.

She walked over and sat in her window seat and opened it, pulling out the barrier remote from inside. Ulma felt bad about keeping it, but she knew she needed to go back to the Isle.

She knew she needed to see Hayden again. One way or another, she would convince him to come to Auradon.
