Not the Only One
"Who are you?"
"Don't kill me! Don't kill me! I'm like you!" He cried, slowly removing his hood.
Ulma's eyes widened when she realized this wasn't a man, but a boy no older than herself. "Y-You're a kid. I don't understand, this shouldn't be possible."
Hayden: Age 16
(Pretend red parts are blue)
"That's what I thought when I saw you." He replied, keeping his eyes focused on her sword. "I've never met another kid before. Are....Are you going to kill me for spying?"
Ulma searched his face for any sign of deception but found none. She knew the people of the Isle were excellent liars, but the slight hint of fear shining in the boy's eyes told her he was no threat.
"I'm not going to kill you." She assured him, slowly lowering her sword to her side. "But I want to know who you are and why you are here on the Isle."
"I'm Hayden," He replied, glancing around before meeting her gaze. "and I was born here."
"I'm Ulma." She introduced. "Now Hayden, why aren't you in Auradon? Un- King Ben brought over all the villian kids from the Isle to give them a second chance."
Hayden shoved his hands in his pockets and leaned back against the wall. "They didn't invite me. Apparently I'm too dangerous to be given a second chance."
Ulma's brow furrowed in confusion. Her uncle's proclamation had included all VK's. No one should have been left behind. "Too dangerous? How could that be?"
"I'm half-god." He explained. "Apparently godly powers are scarier than mortal magic. I'm guessing that's why your here too. I can sense you have Posidon's blessing."
Ulma was taken back by his words. She had been blessed by Posidon? Since when? Was this another secret her mother had been keeping from her?
She shook the thoughts from her mind before meeting his gaze. "What do you mean I've been blessed?"
"When the gods think someone has potential, they will bless them by bestowing a sliver of their power inside them." Hayden explained. "You must be pretty special for my uncle to bless a villian kid."
"Uncle?" Ulma muttered to herself as she tried to make sense of who this blue-haired boy was. I'm half god. His words echoed in her mind as the realization dawned on her. "The god of the underworld, your a son of H-"
"SHHHHH!" He hissed, cutting her off as panic rose in his voice. "Names have power. If you say his name you'll get his attention. That CAN'T happen."
"You're afraid of him." Ulma realized. "Why?"
Hayden stared at her with wide eyes as he began to pace the dock. "Why? WHY? He's a god and the most evil villian on the Isle!"
"Okay, Okay calm down." Ulma soothed, placing her hands on his shoulders. "I just don't understand, why would they invite Uncle Hadie and not you?"
"Hadie? Who's Hadie?" Hayden asked, staring at her with a lost expression. "What does he have to do with me?"
"Hadie is a childhood friend of my dad's. He's the son of.... His dad is...." Ulma groaned as she tried to explain without using the god's name. "Ugh! Your dad is his dad too!"
Hayden shook his head as he pulled away from her grasp. "Liar! I don't have a brother!"
"I'm not lying! Look for yourself!" She pulled out her phone and brought up a picture of Hadie from when he had come for Christmas.
Hayden stared at the photo in disbelief. The man had the same blue hair and pearcing blue eyes as his dad. Except this man smiled proudly as he stood next to a decorated tree with his arm around a clearly very pregnant woman.
"He looks just like my dad." Hayden whispered.
Ulma nodded. "That's because you have the same dad."
"All these years my dad has been lying to me." Hayden seethed. "Why?"
"He probably thought you would leave if you knew." Ulma reasoned. "Hadie left, so he needed someone to help him get his revenge."
"Yeah," Hayden sighed. "Of course, that's all he talks about. What about you? Why are you here?"
Ulma shifted nervously under his gaze. "I'm just visiting."
Hayden eyed her suspiciously. "Visiting? Are you from the other side of the Isle?"
Ulma locked her gaze with his. "No, I was born in Auradon. My parent's left the Isle. Captain Hook and Ursula are my grandparents."
He stumbled back, grabbing the dock post for support as he stared at her with wide eyes. "A-Auradon? Your an Auradon kid!?"
"Hayden please, just let me explain!" Ulma coaxed, reaching her hand out towards him.
Hayden jerked away, his hands gripping tightly at his hair as he shook his head, panic rising in his voice. "No, no, no, no, no, NO! This is bad, really, really, bad!"
She started to speak once more whe suddenly he lunged forward, gripping her shoulders tightly with a wild look in his eyes that shone with fear. "You can't tell anyone! No one can know you saw me! You can't tell! You can't.... You can't...."
Hayden gasped for air as he tried to continue his speech. She could feel his body trembling as he gripped her shoulders and see his chest heaving in and out as his breathing became more labored.
Panic attack. The words rang out in her mind like alarm bells as she began recognizing the familiar symptoms.
Ulma grabbed his hands and pulled him gently around to the side of the shop away from curious eyes before cupping his face in her hands. "Hayden, look at me. I know your scared but your safe. I won't tell, I swear on the River Styx. Now, I need you to breathe with me. 1, 2, 3, in. 1, 2, 3, out. That's it, just do as I do, slow and steady."
She moved her hands from his face to his hands as his breathing slowed, giving them a reassuring squeeze as they continued breathing slowly in and out.
🔥
Hayden felt his muscles begin to relax and his lungs become unrestricted as they breathed together. He didn't understand why she was doing this for him, a boy she didn't even know.
Slowly, his breathing regulated and as he allowed his eyes to meet hers, he found his voice. "How.... how did you know how to make it stop?"
Her blue eyes were filled with concern and understanding as she met his gaze. Ulma's hands felt cold in his warm ones and he quickly became aware of how tightly he was gripping them, causing him to pull away in embarassment.
"My brother Henry has panic attacks." She explained, studying him with a gentle gaze. "My parents taught me what to do just in case he had one while they weren't home."
Hayden nodded as he pulled up his hood and focused his gaze on the ground. "Yeah well, I should go. Just make sure you keep your promise."
He had only taken a few steps when he felt a hand grab his wrist. "Don't go yet, please."
Hayden yanked his wrist away, keeping his gaze focused on the alley ahead. "Why should I stay? So you can laugh at me? I already know how weak I must look."
He started walking away once more when he heard what sounded like running followed by a thump and more running. Hayden shook his head and kept walking, he couldn't look back.
Suddenly, a figure landed in front of him, causing him to stumble back in surprise. It only took a moment for him to realize it was Ulma.
"What....How did you....?"
She smirked as she gestured to the wall along side him. "I ran up the wall. Don't you do parkour on the Isle?"
"Yeah of course," Hayden ran a hand through his hair. "But I didn't know they did it in Auradon."
Ulma giggled as she placed a hand on her hip. "Well if you'd talk to me I bet you'd learn a lot about Auradon."
"Yeah...." Hayden's face paled as his words trailed off. His eyes wide as he backed away. "I gotta go, now."
🔥
"What? Why?" Ulma turned around to face the direction he was looking. She could make out two small figures approaching from the shadows of the alley. "Hayden, who are they?"
"Hayden?"
Ulma whirled around only to find that she was alone.
"Hayden!"
Her voice echoed through the area but he didn't appear.
It was then Ulma heard voices coming from the alley and realized the two figures were approaching. Deciding that she wasn't going to find Hayden, she ran back around to the front of the shop colliding with someone in the process.
"OOF! Ulma! There ye are! We've been looking for ye everywhere!" Captain Hook exclaimed, placing his hands on her shoulders. "Ursula I've got her!"
"Oh thank Triton's throne!" She cried, slithering out of the shop. "We were starting to think you had been taken!"
Ulma adjusted her backpack on her back. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to worry you. I just decided to look around while you two were fighting."
"It's alright my little sea urchin, let's just get you home." Ursula smiled weakly. "Your grandpa is right. It's for the best."
"Aye, we'll walk ye to the edge of the barrier lass." Captain Hook added. "Come on."
Ulma nodded, following him towards the shore when a throat cleared behind them.
"James, aren't you forgetting something? Or should I say someone?" Ursula chided.
Captain Hook sighed as he walked back into the Chip Shop, coming back a moment later with an old, rusted, wheel chair. "Well come on."
Ursula smiled and took a seat, allowing her tentacles to rest in the leg holders. "That's better. One doesn't get to far on land with tentacles. There's days when it's hard just to stand at the stove to cook."
"I can only imagine." Ulma replied quietly, following them down towards the edge of the barrier.
It didn't take long for them to reach the spot where she had made her entrance. The sight of Auradon in the distance making her feel slightly home sick as she turned to her grandparents.
"I guess this is goodbye." She sighed sadly, tucking a piece of loose hair behind her ear.
Captain Hook stepped forward and pulled her into a hug. "Let's not say goodbye lass. Instead, let's say: Until we meet again."
Ulma smiled as she looked up at him. "Until we meet again, I like that."
"Me too." Ursula smiled, extending her arms.
Ulma laughed as she hugged her grandma. "It was so nice to finally meet you. I wish we had more time."
"As do I, but time is not in our favor as of right now." Ursula cupped Ulma's hands in her own. "My dear, do you remember the prophecy I spoke of years ago?"
"Yes I remember." She nodded before reciting the prophecy.
"Eyes of the ocean blue
Skin of caramel hue
A hero born of land and sea
Will set only the worthy free
When the god below becomes aroused
Only together will the fires be doused"
"Good, good." Ursula smiled. "However, I have discovered this is not the full prophecy. The Enchantress hid the middle and ending, not wanting anyone to know the full truth."
Her eyes widened. "Then how did you find out grandma?"
Ursula grinned. "We have brunch every Sunday. The Enchantress has a book she writes down all of her spells and prophecies in. I may have snuck a peak while she was in the little witch's room."
"Grandma!" Ulma scolded, as she attempted not to laugh. "That's so....so....evil!"
"Eh, it's more sneaky than evil." She shrugged. "But old habits die hard."
"So what's the full prophecy?" Ulma asked.
"Eyes of the ocean blue
Skin of caramel hue
A hero born of land and sea
Will set only the worthy free
The shell and dragon must join as one
If the battle is to be won
For when the god below becomes aroused
Only together will the fires be doused
And once the broken families are healed
A burning secret will be revealed"
"The shell and dragon? Broken families? A burning secret? What does that all mean?" Ulma inquired.
Ursula sighed. "I wish I had all they answers, but one thing I do know is that you play a role in this prophecy."
She looked at her grandma uncertainly. "How are you so sure? I'm sure I'm not the only one who fits that description."
"Probably not." Ursula admitted. "After your mother shot me down I began to question it myself. But now that we have the second part, there can be no doubt."
"The shell." Ulma realized. "They always associate you with your sea shell necklace and I'm your granddaughter. Blue eyes, caramel skin, born of land and sea, dad's a pirate and mom is a cecaelian, I guess it is me."
"You see, I was right all along." Ursula cackled.
Captain Hook rolled his eyes. "Now, now, this prophecy could take place years from now. Let's not think to much on it."
"Oh hush you old codfish." Ursula huffed. "Ulma, you need to get your amulet. It will enhance your natural abilities as well as provide you with your talents. You will need to be ready when the time comes."
"If I can find a moment to slip away." Ulma sighed. "I got lucky to have the chance to come here. Mom doesn't usually let us out of her sight."
"She loves you very much, that I know. But no matter what, don't let anyone stop you from chasing your dreams." Ursula took Ulma's hands in hers as she softly began to sing.
When you draw big plans,
But they all go astray...
And you're thinking it's time,
To just throw them away.
Well, a dream is a promise that you make to yourself.
So don't leave it lying way up on some shelf...
Believe in your dream, do the best you can do
Don't let it go,. and it just may come true
Let your dream light your way,
'Iil you reach a better day.
Believe in your dream, like I believe...
In you.
When you're in the dark, feeling lost in the night...
Let your dream be the spark, simply follow its light!
Ulma giggled as she gave her grandma's hands a squeeze and sang back.
I'll believe in my dream with all of my heart,
I won't let go, I'll make a new start.
Ursula nodded encouragingly.
Let your dream light your way,
Ulma smiled.
'Til I reach a better day!
Ursula stood up from the wheel chair as she continued.
Believe in your dream, like I believe...
Ulma looked into her grandma's eyes.
I believe...
Ursula cupped Ulma's face gently in her hands as she finished.
I believe... In you!
She pulled her grandma into a tight hug, wishing she didn't have to say goodbye.
"I love you grandma." Ulma whispered.
A small smiled formed on Ursula's face as a tear slipped from her eye. "I love you too, my little sea urchin. Be safe."
"I will." Ulma promised, slowly breaking the embrace to turn to her grandpa. "I love you too."
Captain Hook hugged her tightly. "I love ye too lass. I want you to let us know when you get back to shore alright?"
She flashed him a confused look. "How am I going to do that?"
Contain Hook flashed her a knowing smile as he handed her a slip of paper. "With this."
Ulma stared at the series of numbers then back at her grandpa. "What is this?"
"That, is something I'm not supposed to have." Captain Hook smirked. "The tech should have been more careful when setting up the video chat system on me ship."
"Okay, but what is it Grandpa?" Ulma repeated.
"The password to log into the video chat from Auradon." He grinned. "We have our own passwords on the Isle, but in Auradon ye need a different password to link the two."
A smile crept onto Ulma's face. "So I can video chat with you whenever I want?"
"Exactly lass, as long as ye don't get caught." He grinned.
Ulma placed the paper safely into her backpack. "I won't, I promise. Thank you so much."
"Yer welcome. Now ye need to go lass." Captain Hook sighed.
Ulma nodded and stepped up to the barrier. She pulled the remote out and pressed the button, opening the barrier. Ulma stepped through, closing the barrier behind her before turning to face her grandparents.
Her heart ached seeing the barrier separating them from her. It wasn't right. She smiled as she put on her necklace from King Triton and transformed.
Ursula smiled proudly and laughed as Ulma waved at her using her tentacles. Blowing them a final kiss, which they pretended to catch and hold to their hearts, and giving a final wave, Ulma dove into the sea and swam back towards Auradon.
