Everything I Ever Thought I Knew: Part 1

The private hospital waiting room felt small as Harry paced back and forth, anxiously waiting for news on his daughter and the mystery boy. He glanced over at the nearby couch where the boys were leaned against each other, fast asleep. Despite several offers to drive them home, the boys had refused to leave. All three quoting, 'Ulma would do the same if it were us.'

Releasing an exasperated sigh Harry sat down, running a hand through his hair. He hadn't felt this scared since the day they discovered Uma was pregnant sixteen years ago. All the doubt and fear he had felt then was slowly creeping out from the back of his mind.

He hadn't been there to protect his daughter. Protecting her was why they had left the Isle in the first place. He had broken the promise he made to himself and Ulma as a father all those years ago.

"Harry?"

Uma's soft voice cut through the silence, snapping him out of his thoughts. Her hands found their way into his and he closed his eyes, focusing on the warmth and comfort of her touch.

"Stop blaming yourself. You couldn't have stopped this."

Harry's eyes snapped open as he met her gaze. "How did you....?"

"Because I know you Harry." Uma reasoned. "You come off as a tough guy, but you beat yourself up over every little thing. Right now we need to be strong, for Ulma and the boys."

Harry looked over at the three sleeping teens. The four had become inseparable in their preschool years and that continued even now. Harry couldn't count how many times he had been told that it was odd for Ulma to play with only the boys and not the girls. But he hadn't seen it that way. Ulma was a tough little girl who preferred wrestling and sword fights over dress up and tea parties. If playing with the boys made her happy, then he was happy for her. Now here they were all these years later and he couldn't imagine better friends for his daughter.

Harry sighed. "I know, but I can't help but think what if...."

"Don't say it." Gil's voice cut him off as he entered the room carrying their coffee. "Ulma is strong, she'll pull through."

They nodded, gratefully taking a mug of coffee as Gil settled in a nearby chair. He too had refused to go home, stating that as their best friend and Ulma's godfather he needed to be there.

"Gil?" Uma called softly.

"Yeah?"

"Could I have a hug? That's how you always cheered me up on the Isle, even though you always got in trouble afterwards."

Gil grinned, moving to sit on the edge of the couch before opening his arms. Uma immediately accepted the invitation and wrapped her arms around him as he did the same.

At a time like this, simple comforts worked best and she was grateful for all he had done for them tonight. Gil had never let her down and she was grateful for his friendship.

The soft click of an opening door caught their attention and immediately they all sat up, anxious for news on their daughter's condition. However, the person who greeted them was not a doctor, but a friend.

"Quinn what are you doing here? It's 5am, I told you that you didn't need to come." Gil said, pulling her into an embrace.

"I couldn't sleep knowing you were all here just waiting for news. In times like this, it's better to be together." Quinn explained, pulling away and sitting down the basket she had been carrying. "Besides, I figured you could use some breakfast. I hope you all like blueberry muffins."

"Thanks Quinn." Uma smiled, giving her a quick hug before moving to allow Harry to do the same.

The four settled down and Gil plucked a muffin from the basket, taking a bite. Quinn chuckled as she brushed the crumbs from his chin. "Don't eat them all. There's still three teenage boys to feed."

Gil nodded as she turned her attention back to Uma and Harry. "So have you heard anything yet?"

They glanced at each other before shaking their heads solemnly. "No, nothing yet." Uma replied. "But seeing as they have two critical patients to care for I can understand why it may be taking so long."

Quinn nodded in understanding. "Yeah, Gil told me about the boy earlier on the phone. You really have no idea who he is?"

Harry and Uma shook their heads. Both had been wracking their brains trying to figure out who he could be with no luck. Uma was especially curious about his identity. She was Co-Advisor of the Isle and she felt awful that a child had been left behind. They had abandoned him without even knowing it. Now he and her daughter were fighting for their lives.

The click of a door being opened snapped Uma from her thoughts and she looked up to see a doctor waking in. They all immediately stood up, anxious to know the condition condition of both teens.

"Mr. and Mrs. Hook it's a pleasure to meet you, I'm Dr. Swartz. I'm overseeing your daughter and her friend's care."

Harry gave the doctor's hand a firm shake before getting asking the questions on everyone's mind. "What is their prognosis, doctor? Are they going to be alright?"

The doctor's face was solemn as she gestured for them to sit down. As they got settled, the boys began to stir and all three quickly sat up upon seeing the doctor.

"How's Ulma?" They asked simutaneously.

"The doctor is getting ready to tell us." Uma explained, hushing the boys before turning back to the doctor.

"Well, Mr. and Mrs. Hook as of right now we have your daughter stabilized but her condition is very fragile. Someone drained all of her magic so fast that it sent her body into shock."

"How?" Connor blurted, trying to understand just how bad Ulma's condition was.

"Well dear, in people who are magic users their magic becomes a part of their natural energy. Because of this, when someone like your friend has their magic drained very rapidly, especially to the point that your friend's was, it's like draining their life force from them." Dr. Swartz explained. "Ulma's magic was entirely drained, leaving so little energy that her body began to shut down. When she arrived, your daughter was in multi-organ failure. She was lucky to have even made it to the hospital."

Harry could feel the tears slipping down his own cheeks as Uma buried her face in his chest. His daughter was literally at death's door and there was nothing he could do. "Is she going to make it?"

"As of right now, I can make no guarantees." She admitted. "In order to preserve what little energy your daughter had left, we had to intubate her. The ventilator will breathe for her and allow her body to focus its limited energy on healing. Ulma has proven she is a fighter, but it's up to her now whether or not she wakes up from this coma."

Harry nodded, trying to remain strong as he held Uma in his arms. Gil and Quinn were holding eachother tightly, their faces wet with tears. Even the boys were shaken by the news. Connor's face was buried in his hands, his body wracked with sobs as the twins held onto each other for support, their eyes wet with tears. The seriousness of the situation had settled heavily in the room, but Harry knew their was still more to come.

"What about the boy? How is he?" Harry asked softly.

"The boy is also in a very fragile state. Unlike your daughter whose magic was drained, he took more physical damage. Though we don't know the details of what occurred it is clear he suffered trauma from a large impact of some kind. His right arm is snapped in half just above the elbow, his spine is severely bruised and he has several fractured vertebrae, and several cuts. However, the worst injury is the one to the back of his head. His skull was fractured and his brain hemorrhaged. We had to do emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and relieve the pressure on his brain. As of right now he is also on a ventilator due to being unable to regulate his own breathing because of his injuries. However, we did find something interesting in his blood results."

"What?" Harry asked.

"Everyone's blood is different but his is especially unique. His blood contains unique platelets only found in individuals who have family ties to those on Mount Olympus. This boy is part god."

"Harry's eyes widened as the pieces slowly fell into place. He had been hidden away on the Isle, godly blood, and the blue hair.  Harry mentally kicked himself for not realizing sooner. This boy was the son of Hades, meaning...... his eyes widened, Hadie had a brother. Harry glanced at Uma and based on her expression, she had come to the same conclusion.

The doctor's voice snapped him back to reality as she continued. "I assure you we have done all we can and will continue to provide the best care possible. I'm very sorry that your family has to go through this. Please don't hesitate to call me if you have any questions."

"Thank you doctor." Harry replied, shaking her hand. "So, may we see her?"

The doctor nodded as she opened the door. "Of course. She's in Room 8 and the boy is in Room 6 just down the hall. I will warn you, it may be a difficult sight."

The doctor slipped out and they were left in silence. Harry shakily took out his phone, the trembling in his fingers so bad he could barely type in the number he needed to call.

"What are you doing?" Uma asked, peeking over his shoulder at the phone screen.

"I'm calling Hadie, he should be here and he deserves to know."

Uma nodded as the phone began to ring. Two rings in the call clicked and Hadie's voice came over the phone. "Hey man, how's the search going? Did you find her?"

"Yeah Hade we found her, but it's not good news. We're at the hospital. Ulma's in a coma." Harry explained, his voice cracking as he spoke.

"Why didn't you call sooner!?" Hadie exclaimed, shocked at the news. "I would have come up there to support you guys!"

"We needed you to care for the boys." Uma cut in. "Besides, we're calling now because we need you. Hadie, Ulma wasn't alone when we found her."

"What do you mean? Did you catch the bastard that did this!?" Hadie fumed.

Harry sighed, knowing he needed to be the one to break the news. "We found a boy with her, he's also in critical condition. Up until now his identity was a mystery, but the doctor's blood test show he has godly blood. Hadie, there's only one god on the Isle."

"What are you saying?" Hadie inquired, the anger in his voice replaced with disbelief.

"You have a brother."

The line went quiet at Harry's answer and for a moment, they thought he had hung up.

"I'll be right there." Hadie's voice suddenly responded before the line went dead.

Harry sighed as he returned his phone to his pocket. He wrapped his arm around Uma's shoulders as they shuffled from the room. A part of him wanted to believe that this was a nightmare and in a moment he would awaken in his bunk on the ship, but each step they took towards his daughter's room proved otherwise.

Slowly, they stepped into the room. The lights had been slightly dimmed, giving the room solemn feeling. Harry was the first to approach the bed, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead before taking a seat. He held her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.

Harry could feel Uma's presence as she sat beside him, but he was too focused on his daughter to pay her any mind. All around him machines beeped, connected to tubes and wires that were now keeping his daughter alive.

"Ulma, it's dad." He spoke softly, stroking the top of her hand with his thumb. "Your mom and I want you to know we love you so much. Keep fighting and come back to us Seastar."

Uma nodded for the boys to join them at Ulma's bed side. Connor immediately walked over, taking his place on the other side of the bed. "Ulma, please wake up. You're my best friend and I can't imagine my life without you in it. If it wasn't for you, I may never have known what it feels like to be part of a loving family. I never told you, but you're like a sister to me."

"Yeah and we would have never joined the R.O.A.R. Team if it wasn't for you." Max cut in, as the twins came to stand beside Connor. "We can't win our next match without you Captain. You're the glue that holds us together, as friends and a team."

Harry gave the boys a small smile before glancing over at Gil who was standing behind Quinn in the doorway. His face was deathly pale, even in the dim light and Harry knew something was very wrong.

"Gil--"

Harry didn't get to finish before he fled the room. Harry immediately followed his friend in concern, leaving Quinn and Uma to take care of things.

By the time he reached the hallway, Gil was hunched over a trash can wretching heavily. Harry walked over and rubbed his back until it passed before sitting him down on a nearby bench.

"Ye alright Mate?" He asked, placing a hand on his shoulder.

Gil shook his head as he buried it in his hands. "I can't do this Harry. I'm trying to be strong, but it's so hard. I-I...."

Gil choked back a sob as Harry looked on. "This is about more than just Ulma, isn't it?"

Gil nodded slowly, giving him the confirmation he needed. Harry knew the miscarriages had been hard on Gil and Quinn, but it never occurred to him that his friend might be hiding more pain than he showed. Gil had watched Ulma grow up and loved her more than anything, seeing her hurt had brought him to his breaking point.

"Gil, why didn't ye come to me? Or Uma? Ye know we would have lent ye a shoulder to cry on." Harry said gently.

Gil looked up to meet his gaze. "You and Uma have a family to take care of. I didn't want to burden you with my problems. I thought I could handle it by focusing on being there for Quinn but now, it feels like the world falling apart faster than I can pick up the pieces."

"Gil," Harry's voice was gentle, yet firm. "Ye can always come to us. Just because we have a family doesn't mean we don't have time for ye. Besides, ye are family. Ye don't have to go through this pain alone. Talk to me now."

"I'm a mess." Gil began, wiping the tears from his cheeks. "I've buried two sons and a daughter, and lost three more that I'll never know the genders of. I've watched Quinn go through heart break after heart break, blaming herself for not being able to carry a child and I'm the one who always picks up the pieces. And now my god daughter is at death's door and I just can't hold it together anymore."

A ghost of a smile formed on Harry's lips as the situation became more clear. "Mate, I know he think ye need to take care of everyone, but ye need to take care of yerself too. I learned the hard way ye can't bottle up yer emotions. From now on, come to us and take the time to talk about yer feelings. Alright?"

"Okay Harry. I promise I'll come talk to you or Uma if things get rough. And thank you for always being there for me, even as kids on the Isle. You'll always be my best friend." Gil replied, flashing him a small smile as he sat up.

Harry chuckled, patting him on the back as he stood up. "Alright, enough of the sappy talk. It's reminding me of how Auradonian we've become."

Gil laughed. "Yeah, okay Harry. Let's head back to Ulma's room. I think I'm ready now."
